Hi Guys

I need some advise. I've recently joined a new company and been given the task of implementing a new backup procedure.

Currently the daily backups dedupe to a SAN and at the end of the week a backup to tape. At the moment the tapes dont have any meanignfull naming convention. Im looking to change that, and the tape backup unit is a IBM TL200 whichs holds 24 tapes.

Any ideas on what would be the best backup method.

Depends. How much data are you backing up? How much data will each tape store? How far back do you want to keep your data? Can your data be segmented - some needs only a current backup, some needs longer term backup?

Hi Dennis sorry its taken me a while to respond. ok below is some figures to show how much data is being backed up. i just copied the byte count from successful jobs in backup exec. They are separate jobs which run over the weekend, as there is alot of data being written to tape it runs into the working hours of the following week. Sometimes this has a knock on effect for the schedule jobs that are due to run.

its currently setup like so. Mon to Thurs the backups backup to the SAN and on Fri to tape.
