"Header" manipulation in Sharepoint

Yes, I know nothing about Sharepoint, so pardon me.

At the main page of our Intranet site you have a bunch of easily edited lists and links and content boxes in the body of the page.  At the top of the page, however, you have the company name and a graphic used as a link.  How can I alter or edit an object that sits in an area that I refer to as a header (for lack of the proper term).
