Are Cisco certifications still worth taking?

Guys,

I have been planning to take a Cisco CCNA course and then the exam sometime this year after doing the Windows 2000 accelerated exam. However, I have heard that Cisco have been experiencing a huge downturn and are laying off a lot of staff, so do you guys still think that it's worth going down that route in the future.

My plan has been to upgrade my NT 4 skills to Win2000 during the next 6 months and then start looking at pursuing Cisco cetifications and hopefully move into that area of Networking.

What do you guys think??

Cheers,
Pete.

While I have not researched the "huge layoffs and economic downturn at Cisco", the deployed equipment isn't going anywhere.

Knowledge and familiarity with Cisco equipment is still a plus. Even if you don't get the certification, study the material anyway.

If you really are confident that you like this type of thing, then do it. Just make sure you really go for it, that is getting some hands-on experience and going for CCNP not just CCNA.

CCNA is worthless by itself, it can be acquired without real-world experience.

That's basically true for any cert aside from the lab ones....Hell, even CCNP will go that route eventually....paperized...

Simply because Cisco apparantly overhired does not affect the ubiquitousness of the equipment out there.

Thanks for the advice. I guess you're right, just because they may have overhired their equipment is not going to go away.

And as for being sure if that is the route that I want to take, we'll I'll only find out when I take some course's and see if I have any interest there. If I do like Cisco stuff (and I hope I do) then I will be looking to aspire to the great heights of 'CCIE' within about 4 years.

But then who knows what will happen with my career, I may meet a beautiful and very rich woman and never have to work again!!!!

Cheers,
Pete.

When you do Pete, find out if she has a younger sister and even richer sister.

MR IT - Yes, you are correct. A Cisco certification is not worth anything anymore. Go with another track (this will make more room for me then)

Seriously though. Cisco bought so many smaller companies, they had to trim the staff so to say. All companies do it when a merger takes place.

And as for you getting your CCIE within 4 years.. If you do, let me know your secret! Have you looked at the requirements for the CCIE? You need to take a written test BEFORE you can even schedule the hands-on test (which is two days by itself)! I read someplace that the pass rate for the CCIE is less than 10%!!! I myself am going towards my CCIE but have a more realistic 8 - 10 year plan for acheiving it.

Greetings All,

What are the best simulations exams for the 640-802 ?

I took the ccna 640-802 exam and received a 785 and needed a 825 to pass (44 questions). I prepared for this exam by making a lab with two 2650 routers and two 2950 switches. I read several books and completed both the Boson and Transcender practice exams with almost 100% correct on all the prep tests the first time around.

The problem is that the actual exam questions are far more complex then what the Boson and Transcender offered even though these exams are geared for the new CCNA exam.

Is there a better exam prep option? Iam going to purchase certmagic.com 640-802 as i heared great reviews about them. Anyone tried them? Let me know plz
