I will be virtualizing a couple of Windows Server 2003 servers from old hardware to a Hypervisor-based solution running on one Quad Core (Core 2 Quad Q8200) nForce i630 computer with 4GB ram and SATA RAID1.

This hardware is relatively limited but far better than the previous system.

I usually use VMWare Server 1.0 (GSX) but in this case I am planning to use a hypervisor based solution for performance reasons.

I would appreciate any information regarding which of these three platforms (ESXi / Hyper-V / Xen) might yield the best performance for this scenario. I am tempted to try Xen because it is Open Source and has recently added support for Windows guests on hardware with Intel VT, but I have been so happy with VMWare in the past and they have been the industry leader for so long. I have not had any experience with Hyper-V but I expect it to be easy to use for me since I have been using Windows server for years.

One of my first concerns is the need for RAID drivers in the "host" operating system (hypervisor) and what is available for me since I am using desktop-class SATA RAID (nForce).

Any information on this is appreciated.

Thanks,
Simon
