Exchange 5.5 sp4. I have an employee who left the org months ago. Mailbox was deleted. I use brightstore 11 and do brick backups in addition to other types of backup. I have restored the mailbox. I was suprised that then when I log directly into the mailbox I didn't have anything in retained deleted items. I was able to get to the setting retained deleted items but it was clean. I do not think the person was savy enough to empty retained deleted or use shift delete. Am I wrong to think that I should have gotten retained deleted back? I am w/in the retained setting of 6 months.

I have read that the retained deleted items are stored in hidden folders. Is this hidden folder a part of deleted folder for given mailbox? If someone could remind me how exactly those invisbile retained deleted items are stored, it would be much appreicated.

Thanks. Bonnie

What I normally do is restore Exchange Info Store onto a spare machine and set DIR (deleted items retention) to some high numbers (perhaps 1-2 years). I've always been able to recover the deleted items.

Here's a great Exchange newsgroup:
Server name: msnews.microsoft.com
Newsgroup: microsoft.public.exchange.admin

Ok, I am doing an restore of information store to a spare machine. Brightstore backups information store for me so I can select. What I am wondering, can i restore this to a different site and organization or do I have to mirror that of the existing exchange server?

thanks. bg

to restore Info Store (IS only, no DS):
- Exchange site name and org name must be exactly the same as production server site and org name
- Server name does NOT have to be the same as the production server
- Same level of patches (OS and Exchange)
- Run DS/IS consistency adjuster after restoring from tapes
