Windows Server 2008 Hosting Launch
By Derek Vaughan
For anyone associated with Microsoft hosting products,
2008 is shaping up to be a very interesting year. In the unlikely event that
you ve been hiding under a rock for the past few months, here s a brief recap
of the Microsoft product launches and a bit about the big push into
virtualization.
In February, Microsoft launched its complement of 2008
development and hosting products. Microsoft will be holding more than 200
worldwide events to mark the launch of Windows Server 2008, Visual Studio 2008,
and SQL Server 2008. The first of these was held in Los
Angeles, California on February 27, 2008 at the Nokia
Theater and Los Angeles Convention
Center. As a Microsoft Gold Certified Web hosting
partner, Windows Server 2008 hosting company,
HostMySite.com, was in attendance at the event. HostMySite.com was also a
Bronze-level corporate sponsor.
The theme of this year s products revolves around the
concept of heroes . These are outstanding individuals with extreme skills and
talents related to specific Microsoft technologies. You can get a sense of the
campaign by visiting the Microsoft-developed Heroes Happen Here Web site at
http://www.microsoft.com/heroeshappenhere.
Mr. Matt Ferrari from HostMySite.com will be featured as a Microsoft Hero .
Bill Staples, Product Unit Manager for IIS at Microsoft,
commented on the Bronze-level sponsorship and participation of HostMySite.com
in the launch event: We at Microsoft are pleased to
include Microsoft Gold Certified Web hosting partner, HostMySite.com in this
year s wave launch event in Los Angeles.
HostMySite.com has always been a leader in Windows-based hosting products and
services. It is a credit to the HostMySite.com organization that Engineer Matt
Ferrari has also been identified as a Microsoft Hero due to his expertise and
leadership in Microsoft Web hosting technologies.
The keynote for the first launch event was delivered by
the first business manager hired by Bill Gates in 1980, now serving as Chief
Executive Officer at Microsoft, Steve Ballmer. The launch event consisted of:
- Breakout Sessions. These are essentially
classroom sessions to familiarize participants with the new products: Windows
Server 2008, Visual Studio 2008, and SQL Server 2008.
- Hands-on Labs. These provide attendees the
opportunity to actually try out and test the software with Microsoft experts
standing by to help and answer questions.
- Microsoft and Partner Pavilions. Displays and
information from Microsoft and partner companies that will enhance the software
products.
- Chalk Talks. A chance for developers and
programmers to speak directly with the software engineers who wrote the code.
- Ask the Experts. Members of the development team
for Windows Server 2008, Visual Studio 2008, and SQL Server 2008 answer any
more questions thrown at them.
As for the product specs and changes coming, here are just
a few of the cool things that Windows Server 2008 will let our customers do
when fully implemented in the hosting environment:
- Install SSL certificates remotely.
- Change permissions on Web folders through the
tool.
- Make application pool state information changes,
as each client will run in their own application pool. This provides
application isolation; so, ideally if one client is running into a coding issue
it is less likely to negatively impact another site or client on the same
server.
Windows Server 2008 also will provide a leap for
virtualization. Developers want control of their applications and Windows
Server 2008 and IIS 7 provide a tool for administrative troubleshooting. Simply
put, this gives the system administrator (or vps client) the ability to open up
IIS and view what queries (or pages) are running long, most often, etc. to find
bottlenecks in code. Look for the virtualization push at Microsoft to increase
throughout 2008.
