Applications Installed on the Test System

You'll need to obtain Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Release 2 (R2) Enterprise Edition as well as the applications you want to install on your test machine's virtual machines (VMs). If you're a TechNet Plus subscriber, you're all set. Open your blue binders and assemble the CDs and DVDs you need. Remember that with TechNet Plus you're licensed to install the included evaluation software in a nonproduction environment. Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) subscribers have similar access to evaluation software. If you aren't a TechNet Plus or MSDN subscriber, you can go to Microsoft's Web site and download trial versions of the software you want to install.

At a minimum, you'll need the following for your test machine's host OS:

  • Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Virtual Server 2005 R2 Enterprise Edition
  • Drivers for any hardware that Windows doesn't include drivers for
