Quest Software's vWorkspace virtual desktop management software now works with Microsoft's management software. vWorkspace version 6.1, revealed this week at Microsoft Management Summit, integrates with System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) and Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V).

vWorkspace was formerly known as Provision Networks Virtual Access Suite. Its new name was announced in January. vWorkspace provides virtual desktops to thin client machines and users can repurpse existing, outdated PCs by installing a small OS to make them act as thin clients.

vWorkspace uses Hyper-V on the back end to handle its virtualization, SCVMM for managing virtual machines, and RDP to deliver desktops to the clients. It uses Quest's Experience Optimization Pack to improve the end user experience, smoothing media playback and hiding typing lag.

Quest General Manager and VP Paul Ghostine said vWorkspace provides an enterprise-grade, full VDI solution. Desktop provision is automated from "golden images," and task automation and power management features are provides.

The new integration with Microsoft's products won't raise the price of vWorkspace, and current vWorkspace users under software assurance will get the new features at no cost.
