Regarding my comment, one reason why the more recent OS is on the C partition is because if you decide that you don’t need XP anymore you can just remove XP from the Win7/Vista boot manager and follow the appropriate procedure to remove Windows XP permanently. It looks odd if Win7/Vista was on the second partition and no OS on the first.

Additionally, My Documents was placed on the third partition so that both OSs can access the same files and to ease backup purposes.

Finally, I had one case with Vista 64-bit and Windows XP where after installing Vista, Windows XP didn’t show up in the boot manager. May have just been a weird one time thing. In any case, a decent boot manager utility to modify the Windows boot manager settings will correct the problem.]]>

Mr. Graham may have an issue in the near future. Windows 2000 support dies within the next 8 months. That means no security updates. In addition as soon as Microsoft drops support for an OS, most software developers also drop support. So he may be stuck with older and potentioal vulnerable Firefox, Thunderbird and OpenOffice. I am not sure about which horror stories he heard about regarding Win XP SP3. I’ve updated probably 40+ systems to SP3 since it’s release with not one issue. A subset of the same people who complained about Vista probably complained about SP3. There are a few blogs out there which listed the issues and corrections. It shouldn’t be too hard to figure out by now if there is any issue with his PC. Update all the drivers and BIOS. If you got an HP system, make sure they didn’t slap on an Intel image for an AMD system. Oh ya. Soon the support for Win XP SP2 will also die. So unless you update, you will again be stuck with a vulnerable machine.]]>

I have a nasty issue with my Exchange 2007 server that I inherited all of a sudden due to a death of someone. It does not respond to email internal or external. The Exchange Transport will not stay running either. Here are the errors I get when I launch the Queue Manager (server and domain name have been changed to protect the innocent). Any help would be useful, I hope: Microsoft Exchange can’t connect to the Queue Viewer server on computer "server_nn.corp.domain.com". Verify that the Microsoft Exchange Transport service is started. It was running command ’get-queue -ResultSize ’1000’-ReturnPageInfo $true -SortOrder ’+NextHopDomain’ -SearchForward $true -BookmarkObject $null -BookmarkIndex ’-1’ -IncludeBookmark $false -server ’server12.corp.tailfeathers.com". Microsoft Exchange can’t connect to the Queue Viewer server on computer " server_nn.corp.domain.com ". Verify that the Microsoft Exchange Transport service is started. Re:Implementing Drillthrough for Developers Hi, I’m currently having problems trying to drillthrough on an Analysis Services cube (with 3 partitions) using the Microsoft Excel add-in for Analysis Services. I’ve checked that drillthrough is enabled, as in your Development Tip, but It still won’t work properly. I can drillthrough on the current/default partition, but when I try to drillthrough on another partition, I get the error message: "Unable to drillthrough on this Cell". Can anyone help in anyway? I can drillthrough on all partitions when still inside Analysis Services using the Browse Data option, but just not via Excel? Many Thanks Jon_Derbyshire@hotmail.com]]>

Overall I found this article very useful, but the statement that SQL Server CE doesn’t support stored procedures is erroneous. According to a number of people on the web, SPs aren’t supported in ce, but they are incorrect. Here is a quote from Jim Wilson found at http://blog.jwhedgehog.com/200402archive001.asp: He explains that CommandType of Stored Procedure isn’t supported in RDA so this won’t work (hence why most think it doesn’t work at all): SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand(); cmd.CommandText = “MyStoredProc ’02/23/2004’ ”; cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; However, the solution is to use the exec command like this: SqlCeRemoteDataAccess rda = new SqlCeRemoteDataAccess(); rda.Pull("authors", "exec MyStoredProc ’02/23/2004’ ", ...);]]>

Active/Active load balancing to storage on Windows C****ers - the most robust offering - is not widely available. According to transcripts on MSDN this requires the storage driver simply issue SCSI-3 persistent reservations. Who gets the blame here? Microsoft for not having the DDK readily available to storage vendors or storage vendors putting the Windows platform lowest on their list of priorities? From what I understand Veritas has had this support for other OSs for years now. A source at Veritas tells me that this Active/Active DMP on a Windows C****er functionality will be entering beta any day now. Wake me when it’s ready! I mean cmon guys!]]>

In your note to Readers you mentioned that many people indicated they didn’t want the HTML version of the newsletter. I, and I think maybe many other people, would like an HTML version of the newsletter that had the entire content in it. The part I didn’t like about the new HTML newsletter was that I was constantly having to click on links to read the rest of the story. On another matter, I would like to see the links in the newsletter above be live so I didn’t have to copy them and paste them in to a browser address bar. ]]>

Hi Doug: No, I really don’t have a problem with heat in the closet. I have the fortunate advantage of having the furnace also under the stairs - so, it pulls air through the closet. When I’m using the projector one of the doors stays open and the vent fan on the projector blows out of the closet and I make sure I keep that door open while the projector is doing it’s 45 second shut down to ensure no buildup of heat in the closet. The shelves also help keep equipment cool - I put 2 6" deep shelves on a 12" bracket which gave me the ability to pull the equipment away from the wall to enable air-flow around the equipment. Amazing! People often stop at the level of a projector and a few accessories... but few people that I know actually go through and integrate all the hardware and systems into one. This obviously required some technical expertise, patience, problem solving, and creativity. Forget the show "Pimp My Ride"... you should host your own show "Pimp my Living Room".]]>

Excellent job and a nice idea Karen. I think lots of people are intrigued about setting up the system and hooking it all up together. Not all of us have that much kit but its nice to see how people are pulling the technologies together round the PC and home cinema.]]>

Windows & .NET Magazine UPDATE--My Trojan War Becomes a Quagmire--June 8, 2004http://www.windowsitpro.com/article/firewalls3/windows-net-magazine-update-my-trojan-war-becomes-a-quagmire-june-8-2004#commentsAnchorSun, 01 Aug 2004 03:26:33 GMT
I had the Tvm Trojan attach itself to my pc... After a couple of hours, I was finally able to remove it. Forget all the spyware’s, adware’s, etc... I tried several, and they didn’t work. It’s really easy. 1. Boot into safe mode (choose F8 at bootup) 2. Search the registry for Tvm. Delete all instances. 3. Go to C:\Program Files\ delete the Tv Media directory 4. Reboot your PC... These steps fixed my PC... Good luck!]]>

I got an update notice yesterday for MSN Messenger and after I did it I suddenly couldn’t connect. I uninstalled and reinstalled and still can not connect. Two other people I know did the update and had similar problems. DO NOT update you messenger if it is working until this problem is resolved!]]>

Excellent article! Can someone clarify the BLOB confict? The "SQL Tips for Developers" piece by Vaughn recommends we keep BLOB out of the database because of db cache flushing and IO performance. Then Otey’s piece "Using the SqlCommand Object to Import BLOBs" tells us how to store BLOBs. Does Vaughn’s recommendation stand (Storing BLOBs is bad practice) or should be put BLOBs in our DB’s anyway? Will SS 2005 bring more efficient BLOB handling or separate data caches to make storing BLOBs a good idea?]]>
