Maurice, -First, don’t use the NIC properties page. Just stay away from it. Use the "Administrative Tools\Network Load Balanacing Manager" tool. -Add a new cluster. The cluster IP will be the one you will route outside traffic to (10.38.24.x), enter your mask, and the DNS name (doesn’t have to resolve yet). I’ve selected multicast here, and it works. Not sure what the best setting is. Click Next. -Add any additional NLB IPs (you can always do this later). Click Next. -Setup any port rules (I don’t), click next. -enter the IP for the first host. Usually, this is the machine you are currently logged into. This CAN be either the "outside" or "inside/heartbeat" IP. I just stick with the heartbeat IP. select the heartbeat IP from the list. Next. -Select 1 as the priority. Click Finish. Easy part done. -Add a host to the cluster. Enter the info for the second host. Finish. -Here is where it gets a little hairy. Be patient and calm. Most likely the next thing you will see is the second host as a "misconfigured" status. Let go a for a few minutes. Afte that, every few minutes you should click the refresh command from the menu. Soon it will show both hosts as converged. Also you can use the line command"nbl query". -Dana]]>

Hi Allen, I found this article more than interesting but still not satisfying. I trying to set up a NLB cluster with 2 nic’s per node based on Windows Server 2003. Goal is to achieve an infrastructure where the cluster and heartbeat information goes over the first nic (192.168.10.0/30) and the main LAN traffic goes over the second nic (10.38.24.0/21). As suggested I entered the Heartbeat NIC information in the host settings in the cluster parameters. I then get a message that I need to enter the just added IP address to the LAN NIC IP settings. Because this address is already assigned to the Heartbeat NIC this is not possible. I am very surprised finding so many articles on the Internet on NLB and how good it is to split up the Cluster/Heartbeat traffic from the LAN traffic using two NICs, but nowhere (really nowhere !!) I can find how do configure NLB that way on a Windows Server 2003 environment. I hope you can help me out with this. Sincerely, Maurice Joosten IT Consultant The Netherlands]]>

Thanks Allen for explaining in details abt the NLB configuration on dual NICs. The above setup doesn’t take much longer time than putting an effort to make the live site to work across the NLB servers. Lets speak the practical situation where you r going to setup NLB for production servers, you’ve 1 site with 1 virtual IP and with 2 private IP addresses (i.e. www.domain.com + 202.xx.xxx.xxx + 192.20.10.1 + 192.20.10.2). Your site is up and running fine with 192.20.10.1 and now you’ve added similar server to the same zone and you’ve configured NLB for both servers. In this situation beside the above steps mentioned what r the other configuration required to make it work for both servers, lets say i bring down 192.20.10.1 server using WLBS STOP does the traffic routed to 192.20.10.2? In the first place how r u going to configure in the DNS entry and in the firewall entry to accept 2 different private networks with 1 virtual ip. Hope you’ll help to clarify my doubts. Thanks in advance.]]>

Securing 802.11 Wireless Networkshttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/dhcp2/securing-802-11-wireless-networks#commentsAnchorWed, 19 Jun 2002 10:12:22 GMT
Does Allen know what he was saying, re: subnets and addressing? 1st, he states he assigned 10.1.1.x subnet. Then, he states you can let them automatically assign to 169.254.x.x, which actually is the failover addressing if no DHCP server is found; allowing that faulty assignment means there’d be no gateway, subnet mask, WINS/DNS Servers, or any other value DHCP can give. Then, he states he used 192.168.0.x, but it’s wasteful to use the entire subnet... so he partitioned out .33 to .46 (why not .47, unless that is the RRAS box’s IP), but left the subnet mask at 24-bit. So, he suballocated addresses, but didn’t partition out any subnets... Why this confusion with addressing? (and I’m only on Page 2...)]]>

Firewalls with VPNhttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/firewalls3/firewalls-with-vpn#commentsAnchorWed, 06 Jun 2001 09:51:40 GMT

Early in the review process, I had to define exactly what category of products to test so that I could be sure I was comparing apples to apples. I decided to highlight four popular software-based network firewalls whose vendors also offered a VPN that integrated with the firewall. I’d gladly review UNIX products and appliance-based solutions, but reviewing them all in one article wasn’t an option.

Firewalls with VPNhttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/firewalls3/firewalls-with-vpn#commentsAnchorWed, 06 Jun 2001 09:51:40 GMT

Articles and reviews about firewalls always seem to lump products by platform. For example, an article about Windows NT firewalls won’t include standalone boxes such as the products that WatchGuard Technologies and SonicWALL offer; UNIX products also get left out. Can an NT-based network use a UNIX firewall or a SonicWALL appliance? Of course it can. Consider expanding Allen Jones’s Lab Reports: "Firewalls with VPN" (March 2001) to include other firewall platforms.

1) We are a private company.
2) We use IIS 5.0 for in-house development, testing, and staging, and our production site runs on IIS 4.0.
3) We do not use any .NET servers.
4) I support two IIS servers.
5) I would like to see more information on working with IIS remotely, i.e. our web-host who allows us to connect to the IIS server for production from the Internet. Performance tuning is also important.
8) I spend better than 30 hours a week developing content and applications for our site, although I expect this to change soon.
10) HTML format would be my preference for the newsletter.
11) Summary and link is a great way to present the newsletter, since I rarely have time to read through the entire newsletter.

Do not support IIS servers except our own inhouse.
I attend TechEd and MEC.
We spend most of our time developing websites.
I prefer to get the newsletter in text with the commentary included, the rest could be links.

Keeping Up With IIShttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/windows-2000-server/keeping-up-with-iis#commentsAnchorFri, 20 Apr 2001 06:07:27 GMT
hi guys I have a problem. I have used index server on WinNT 4.0. I have created a catalog by the name icat and done the necessary coding and everything is working fine. Iam supposed to use the indexing service on one of my clients place which is running win2000 server. I copied all my asp files to my clients place. I have configured the Indexing service and created the same catalog with the name icat.

But there is a typical problem iam facing. The problem is whenever i search for a topic it shows me all the results. But when i want to click on one of the links for the data from the search its no taking the vpath. I don’t know why is that. Its very well working under WinNT 4.0. I have included only one folder for indexing.Instead of showing me the path as http://www.xyz.com/cel_final/html/tax.asp its showing http://www.xyz.com/cel_final/html/ only this its not taking tax.asp .Html is my folder name that i have included for indexing.

Please do the needful and reply asap.
Thanks ]]>

Could you do an article on how MS Office Server Extentions changes or removes the default anonymous user/author/admin accounts which are setup by default in IIS and what should be done to restore these accounts. I installed these Office Server Extentions on our intranet server running IIS and wiped out IIS’ previously setup default accounts. I had to reinstall the previous default accounts in IIS which had been removed. If there is already an article about this, just let me know.]]>

A good review except you don’t really discuss the overall security of the products short of the mention of Checkpoint’s secureclient. You should have at least discussed the varieties of mechanisms of the various firewalls, application proxy, stateful inspection, etc. I must admit I am biased to the Raptor product. It’s a tough cookie to break into. I do not beliecve that there is one case where a hacker broke the security of a Raptor firewall. The same can not be said for the market leader, Checkpoint. Your article shed no light on this complex subject. My $.02, ]]>

Firewalls with VPNhttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/firewalls3/firewalls-with-vpn#commentsAnchorWed, 21 Feb 2001 15:26:39 GMT
I took a few seconds to review your article. In your assessment of FireWall-1/VPN-1 you are wrong on a number of points. Check Point does indeed include wizards for defining rulebases. If you click on File, New Policy and enter a policy name, click on security and address translation, on the right hand side of the dialog box, you will see "helpers" including Wizard, Template and empty policy. You also fail to point out that the standard remote client SecuRemote is $FREE$. Performance of the Log viewer is greatly dependent upon you hardware and address resolution capabilities. If your firewall machine is the same as your management machine then performance will be adversly effected. Secondly if you have "options, resolve addresses" turned on, then the performance of the log viewer is directly relational to the speed of your management servers DNS resolution capabilities. Besides which would you rather have performance and security or near-real-time reporting???]]>

The product may be an excellent one but I would NEVER let anything developed by Panda Software touch any of my machines or that of my clients.
