Can one theory explain all things MS is saying ? I propose the following "Standard Model": MS is ... * Creating a NET W8 Framework in which they are ... * Replacing DirectX with the HTML5 Rendering Engine. * Replacing MSIL with Javascript. * Implementing Silverlight/WPF/XNA (http://jsil.org/) in a layer on top of HTML5 (not side-by-side with HTML5). * Viewing the HTML5 Browsers as "Plugins" for the different Operating Systems and adding also Out-of-Browser (OOB) functionality for each OS. Can you imagine the impact on portability ? Can you imagine the impact on Java based systems ? H.Dolder http://www.hdolder.com/CutBSK6fN.htm z ]]>

VB -> VB.NET was disruptive but I think everyone knew deep down that it was a net positive move technologically. .NET -> JS is not an advancement by any stretch of the imagination. The problem with JS is that it has a few elegant nuggets in it, which confuses people into thinking that maybe it's not so bad to forget 40 years of computer science lessons about such things as type safety. As a daily user, I can attest that it is so bad! Perhaps this is all part of some elaborate manipulation strategy by Microsoft and that they have some carefully sculpted plan to turn the seemingly alienated developer community into avid fans; if so, I'm still bugged and wish they would just shoot straight. Gimmicks like those used by Apple might bring short-term success, but just irritate people long-term; especially in the corporate world.]]>

As a SharePoint specialist with a huge investment in .NET I am very concerned that Microsoft are making a costly and huge mistake and for what reason I have to ask? Everyone is very happy with Windows 7. Everyone is very happy with .NET (well not everyone but you know what I mean). Windows 8 looks like turning into the next Vista but worse because Microsoft are determined to beat Google et al. People like PCs because they are powerfull, they work when your internet goes down and they can tailor them to hearts content. The brave new world where your computer will no longer work if you have no internet connection looks like a fools folly of gigantic preportions. I normally upgrade my systems to the current version of windows but I will think long, hard and carefully before I use Windows 8.]]>

I have to agree with the previous poster regarding the ever changing landscape. As a co-worker of mine once said "If we could successfully implement (you put in the date)'s technology we would be so far ahead of the game". The problem is that all the new technologies try to mask the real problem in the business computing space: We don't understand the problem space. Until we better understand the business problem we are trying to solve you could have Star Trek type computers and it would not help. ]]>

It’s 0600 and the radio is playing "I’ve got you babe", so it must be Ground Hog Day. Microsoft won’t be able to repeat the embrace-extend-extinguish strategy as the world has moved on. There’s a strong standards initiative where developers (at least proper, open, non-Microsoft developers) never use Microsoft browsers for development due to the years of bug-ridden browsers which Microsoft refused to fix. The operating system isn’t Windows everywhere with the advent of tablets and smartphones -- iOS & Android dominate, not to mention the number of Mac users who develop and design for a living. Silverlight is yet another thick client technology. It will be seriously undermined by poor or inappropriate implementations, just as Flash has taken a beating. Silverlight is also a Windows tech that’s best implemented on the desktop, not on mobile or non-Windos devices -- it’ll probably not even continue to be developed for XP. Add to that security questions, infrastructural implementations... there’s little reason to install the client even if it is available on your platform. There’s a small future for Silverlight on the intranet and extranet where you have some control over the client’s operating system, hardware and browser. Not to mention the server tech - you’re hardly going to use Silverlight in a Java environment. As a general-purpose tech, Silverlight is dead; it never stood a chance. Get over it.]]>

"Game changer"? How about late to the game. Granted the iPhone/AT&T combo is horrible and RIM/Blackberry is losing market, the two of them, coupled with the Android have pretty much shut MS out the the. I have owned several WM phones over the years. Let me tell you that paying $20 to $30 for an application that I can now get for between $1 to $5 has left a bad taste i my mouth. The tell is MS having to pay developers, in advance, to write for this new device. Can you say Kin?]]>

Next I suppose we will need disclaimers on all web sites explaining that they don’t magically update every article in existence each time MS releases a new version. I had the same ’success’ with this as Diane did. I ran the script as a bat file in the same directory as the exec.vbs. The task manager shows that the process (i.e. notepad.exe) is running on the remote, but no gui appears. Also, the process seems to be doing nothing. From what I’ve read, this is the result of a ’security fix’ by Microsoft in one of their service packs (W2k SP4, I believe). Is there a workaround for this? Symantec’s anti-virus server at least still seems capable of deploying and running its client software on remote machines where it hasn’t previously been installed, suggesting to me that remote execution is possible.]]>

Running an FTP Server on IIS 5.0http://www.windowsitpro.com/article/ftp/running-an-ftp-server-on-iis-5-0#commentsAnchorSat, 12 Jun 2004 06:21:28 GMT
I have a problem. I wish to run to ftp servers using just one IIS server. I also only have one domain name. I can easily set up one ftp site that refers to the correct place using :21 at the end on my url. However, when i try to get the other working using a different suffix (and yes i have forwarded the port on my router) it doesn’t take me to my server, instead it just times out. If anyone can help me please e-mail me at albleasdale@msn.com. Thank you in advance to anyone with an suggestions]]>

This is a bit of a sticky wicket. I own a stand-alone laptop Dell Inspiron 8000 that I purchased for my daughter as her college graduation gift. She used it for a couple years, and then gave it back to me since she had upgraded to something else. I then signed on w/ BellSouth FastAccess DSL and purchased a firewall. One of the log alerts indicated Windows Management Instrumentation. My comment is a question: Is it possible that this creep I work with and his computer-savvy lady friend in the company’s ITS Dept are spying on me? If possible, then my suspicions are confirmed. Please let me know. I have already filed a complaint with BellSouth’s internet abuse department. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to your response.]]>
