Netmeeting? You must be kidding! Microsoft withdrew support for this way back when. I signed up for Skype Video when it was in beta last month and it works really well - and it’s free. MSN Messenger video has improved significantly over the past few releases too. If you don’t want to look like a call-center operator or for conference use with multiple participants at each end, you will need a good quality speakerphone. Audio quality is far more important than video quality in a videoconference call so you need something that will produce professional results without breaking the bank. We carry the Phoenix DUET speakerphone range (www.intermedia-cs.co.uk) in Europe and these great little devices punch way above their weight in performance. Alternatively, if you need an enterprise-class, CPE-based collaboration tool which provides video, VoIP, whiteboard, slide presentation, application sharing and web touring +++, try Marratech (www.marratech.com). It’s not free but it’s easy to install, maintain and use and gives a secure collaboration environment inside your firewall. ]]>

Clustering Softwarehttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/clustering/clustering-software#commentsAnchorWed, 30 Oct 2002 09:34:12 GMT

You can build your own cluster configuration, but if you plan to use Microsoft Cluster Service, Microsoft will support only complete turnkey solutions listed on its Hardware Compatibility List (HCL--http://www.microsoft.com/ hwdq/hcl/search.asp). In addition to complete turnkey solutions, the HCL also lists components that passed Microsoft’s Cluster Component Candidate testing. Microsoft intends for only OEMs to use this list; the company will not support your homebuilt cluster even if you construct it from approved parts. If you don’t mind forgoing Microsoft support, however, you might want to use this list as a starting point. I’m not aware of any references for constructing your cluster, but the component vendors on the HCL might be able to provide the guidance you need.

If you need a fully supported solution, you might be better off with one of the clustering products I mentioned in the story. NSI Software’s Double-Take for Windows, for example, doesn’t require a shared storage array and, according to the vendor, will work with any Windows servers. This type of approach should simplify your cluster configuration and might be cheaper because you won’t need cluster-aware versions of your applications.

After reading Mark Weitz’s "Clustering Software" (September 2002, InstantDoc ID 25951), I have a cluster server question. I teach at a community college, and we’re interested in implementing a two-node server cluster in our teaching lab. We don’t have the budget to buy a turnkey cluster solution but want to construct a cluster from standard parts: two tower PCs and a shared RAID unit. Can you recommend resources that explain in detail how to construct a two-node cluster from base units? Connecting the nodes to a common RAID subsystem is an unknown step for me.

I read Mark Weitz’s Market Watch: "Help Desk Software" (May 2002, InstantDoc ID 24550), which is informative but doesn’t include the software I’m evaluating. The product, Leigh Business Enterprises’ LBE Web Helpdesk (http://www.lbehelpdesk.com) is Web-based, has a robust feature set, and is very easy to set up. I emailed LBE’s tech support for help, and within 2 hours, I received an answer that solved the problem.

This software costs less than the products you mention in the article. Does the magazine consider more than price when it evaluates quality software?

The hard part is how to actually ACCESS the mail remotely; there is not a clue in the whole manual referring to that minor detail, leaving it up to the user to guess and experiment(as of yet I have not hit upon the proper method, and since we have no dial-up connections here I am forced to experiment from home)]]>

The article was pretty useless, a cursory listing of several vendors products. How about some non-sales related information such as performance. I can get general Sales information from the vendor.]]>

Your article tells me what I already know, which is that if I want to buy a dual-proc workstation then I’m pretty much relegated to the unproven 840/RAMbus technology. I would much rather prefer to purchase a dual-proc machine based on proven 440bx/810e/SDRAM technologies. What I really need to know is why an unproven technology like 840/RAMbus is being thrust upon us by Intel as essentially the only choice. I guess the fortunate side is that I can work around this problem by purchasing a lower-end 440bx/SDRAM dual-proc workgroup server and converting it into a higher-end dual-proc workstation.]]>

Hi, I’m writing to you to say it’s a shame to publish such an article a month after Compaq & Microsoft stoped NT support on Alpha !! And there is another version of the XP1000 which uses a 21264 CPU @ 667 MHz. I know that you plan those types of article a long time before it is published but please check with "recent" news. Comments form an already disappointed AlphaNTers!]]>
