Hello, I prefer Teamviewer as remote control tool and I can only recommend this fabulous tool to everyone. There are companies which charge you per client license which is quite unfair (if you have 3000 of them:). I think for you Carlos this hint comes a little late but Teamviewer has a big license where everything is included (on supporter and client side). By the way - it is free for non-commcercial use! Check it out on http://www.teamviewer.com]]>

The service that Interland provides is dismal, only to be beat by their tech support. two weeks ago we were having massive issues with just basic ASP pages loading and connection with the ACCESS db we were using. in one instance, I sent them a very detailed description including where the ACCESS db file was and what it was named and the pages in questions and error messages... their response was: "We are unable to duplicate any errors on the page in question - The location of the Access db was not provided."]]>

Your article holds out the promise of a solution to my home networking nightmare. I, too, have a central PC running W2K. This machine provides the connection to my printers and scanner. I also have a laptop running W2K and a new PC running XP. I bought a LinkSys BEFW11S4 wireless 4-port router/access point to connect to my DSL modem, and 2 LinkSys WUSB11 wireless access points. I intended to connect the central W2K PC by wire to the router and use the wireless links with the other 2 PCs. I was able to get all PCs on the Internet through the DSL modem, but I have not figured out how to set each one up so that each can "see" all the others and share folders and files, and play head-to-head games. XP’s networking wizard is useless, since it does not work with W2K. Microsoft’s on-line networking help sites (e.g., TechNet, Knowledge Base, etc.) are equally useless and appear to be nothing more than blatant coercions to "upgrade" to XP. So, what network settings worked for you? I’d like to set up a home domain (so I can use XP user account restrictions other than Administrator and Restricted [e.g., XP does not have a Power User or Standard User group unless XP is connected to a domain!!], but don’t want to pay a fee for a domain name and I don’t know how to set one up anyway! Can you help? P.S. LinkSys said, "It’s a Microsoft issue. Call them." I’ll never buy anything from LinkSys again. I’d like to be able to say the same about Microsoft!]]>

The new version (v4.0) of OpalisRobot is hot stuff! We had been running v3.6, the version in this review above, and had come to rely on it for routine tasks. One thing we always wished it had was an enhanced GUI and Reporting capabilities, and in 4.0 Opalis came through. The new version is easier to configure job processes than ever and it generates reports on the fly of jobs that are processed while I am at the Beach! If there is an issue with our servers, Opalis sends a message to my email acct...my Blackberry in my case, and I can respond with a command, telling it what to do. Why go the the office anymore? I have to agree with the two other postings on this topic. VNC is a great package that I have used to great effect managing both *NIX and NT boxes from the same console. The article mentions that two of the reviewed products allowed access from a Web browser. VNC has that ability and it can use both a RFB protocol as well as X11. I think that a review of VNC included with the other commerical products would have completed this review of remote access products.]]>

Larry’s review of RAdmin (Remote Adminstrator) was good, but incomplete. RAdmin is the absolute best utility I have ever encountered, because of price, simplicity, stability, speed and sheer usefulness. For $1000 we got an enterprise license which allows unlimited installations in the entire organization. So it is on every PC we have and doesn’t crash any of them. I can take full control of any windows-based networked PC we have in seconds just by entering its IP address. Fantastic for all our help desk and remote administration needs. We could never afford to do this with the other remote control programs which cost around $80 per pc. It has changed the way we work, and cut thousands of travel miles and travel dollars and time. We can even take remote control of a user’s home PC once that user has dialed into his Internet ISP, checked and emailed us the current IP address. We can connect to our NT servers and use/administer them as if we were physically sitting at them. It always works and allows instant access at all times and never crashes PCs. Larry’s contention that RAdmin is useless for help desk use is what compelled me to write my two cents worth here.]]>

Larry J. Seltzer’s Lab Reports: "Remote Control Administration for Windows NT Server 4.0" (May 2000) reviews 10 remote control solutions, but his review left out the best remote administration tool: 3AM Laboratories’ RemotelyAnywhere. Although this utility works only over TCP/IP (which might be why the roundup didn’t include this tool), the ease of use more than compensates for this limitation. I especially like the ability to quickly access common utilities such as Service Control Manager (SCM), Event Viewer, and Registry Editor without establishing a full GUI session. The fact that RemotelyAnywhere works through a Web browser and has a small client footprint is also nice. Combining this tool with a standard RAS server in your remote locations gives you a powerful yet simple solution. Any Windows NT systems administrator who is interested in remote administration should check out the product.]]>

I read Larry J. Seltzer’s Lab Reports: "Remote Control Administration for Windows NT Server 4.0" (May 2000), which compares 10 remote control solutions. AT&T’s Virtual Network Computing (VNC--http://www.uk.research.att .com/vnc) is another remote control administration program that many people use. The tool has its limitations (e.g., no file transfer, weak security), but it works well for me.

VNC lets you remotely access a server in another building or even just across the hall. The tool runs on a variety of platforms (e.g., NT, Windows 9x, UNIX). Because VNC can run on Win9x (server side), I’m going to use it with some of our clients who call us frequently for support. To top it off, the price (i.e., free) is unbeatable.]]>

I have had it with Interland!! I am actively looking for a replacement -- my site goes down literally every day. This is not a joke and not an exaggeration. It typically takes about 20-25 minutes to get a level 1 tech on the phone (after being on hold) and then at least another half hour talking to agonizingly slow tech people to get my site back up. I have switched servers at Interland SIX times! I really thought Interland would be a good deal and they looked very professional. Do not let yourself be deceived! I urge you to skip past Interland and evaluate others -- even if they cost much more. E-mail me if you have any questions.]]>

Regarding Larry J. Seltzer’s article on NT web hosting. I took his advice and went with a company he recommended -- Interland. What a sorry mistake this has been... Can you send me Larry’s email address so I can update him on what has been happening? Regarding Interland -- supposedly selected as a "premier hosting company" by several magazines. They may be alright for a child who wants a website about his pet dog, but for serious business applications they are a total disaster. NO... this isn’t a joke, Interland is a so unbelievably incompetent that it is making my job as a webmaster impossible. Right now Im dealing with two issues they have not been able to resolve - I am constantly getting "550 Access Denied" errors when I try to FTP into my site, and I haven’t been able to access my server logs for Webtrends since April 4th. I have a very successful site and I need my numbers for my advertisers. I have been on the phone with tech support for several hours every day for 2 weeks trying to sort out the problems and I keep getting shuffled around from tech to tech each of whom promises to solve the problem and then doesn’t respond for 24 hours. When I track them down again I usually get an email saying "the problem is solved" and I check it out and nothing has changed. For an Interland customer the worst thing that can happen is that your problem will get escalated, then you aren’t allowed to talk to a human being. They shield their real techs away from the public and force all communication to go through the first tier phone support or the sales department. For example, I’m trying to get a table in my SQL database restored and they are going to charge me $500 to get the information that was lost. I honestly doubt that they actually know how to do a restore since we requested it 3 days ago and the person I talked to had to "talk to someone else" to see if it could be done. True to their style, I haven’t heard back from anyone about it since. Requests to speak to management get sidestepped. You either get another "promise" to take care of things or you get transferred to a voicemail where no one responds to your call. I have sent email to everyone from the CEO on down and haven’t even received a courtesy response. And mind you, I am a good customer having spent over $5000 on their services in the last 6 months.]]>

I’m having a terrible time finding a Windows NT Web hosting provider. Is this task impossible? My main area of concern is the remote administration capabilities. Is it too much to ask to have a reliable, inexpensively priced provider and a decent administration interface? I’ve found several providers, but their administration interfaces leave much to be desired. I read Larry J. Thank you VERY much for the information. I have been a customer of Interland’s for more than a year and a half. I stayed with them because of the 24x7 toll-free support - which I need A LOT. My site has been down 6 times in less than a month. I had numerous billing problems. For over as year, they charged my credit card every three months for a domain name that wasn’t even registered with internic. It was a typo by their staff. I had to call for credits every three months! Then, when they finally "deleted" the errounous account, they deleted my entire website. It caused me immense headaches. My real estate domains were parked on a Cherokee Indian site. I contacted the owner of the site and they said they get contacted frequently by other customer’s when interland does this to them. Interland’s staff is friendly, but they rarely call back. Hold times are usually 20-30 minutes - At least it’s toll-free :) I have NEVER gotten a helpful response via their online support, other than something like. "Site up. call if there is a problem." No explaination. Anyway... the conclusion is that they will be out of business soon if they treat all their customers this way. Thanks to you, I will now give Crystal Tech a try. Thanks again and please call some more of Interland’s customers and find out what pains they experienced. Judy Couto ]]>
