Wouldn’t it have been better to compare the cost of an average server’s downtime? At 99.9% that would be 8 hours and 46 minutes or $946,800 per year. So, the ftServer would save %944,100? Now that’s some return on investment.

BTW - the meter is at 99.99976 today]]>

As we move toward the "Connected Home" we can learn much from the path taken by large enterprise. Where once enterprise networks were comprised of myriad PCs networked together, (a nightmare for even the best IT staff to manage) today we find datacenters. The current connected home ’solutions’ are likewise made up of individual products, often from multiple suppliers/providers, scattered throughout the home. Managing these diverse products presents the home owner and service provider with same problems experienced by those earlier enterprise IT staffs. What is required is a comprehensive datacenter solution for the home.]]>

Hi kgottfredsen, You’re right, Quest Coefficient for SQL Server doesn’t support SQL Server 2005. We apologize for this error, it was inadvertent. Because the award was given in 2006, the fact that Quest Coefficient doesn’t support SQL Server 2005 doesn’t affect the validity of the award. At the time, most DBAs were still using earlier versions of SQL Server. Thanks for pointing out this error. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. The review above says that Quest Coefficient supports SQL Server 2005. It does NOT support SQL Server 2005. I don’t see how it could be rated as a "gold winner" when it doesn’t support the most recent SQL Server version (which had been available for almost a year before this article was written).]]>

To "A SharePoint Survival Guide for SQL Server Admins": It it essential after attaching a sharepoint database to change the dbo to the account which has created it in the first time, normally the Sharepoint administrator account. SQL Server 2005 don’t remember this in the detaching process. So you have to register the Owner of the database(s) before detaching it and choose the true owner at the attach process. You can alse execute the procedure sp_changedbowner if the database is already attached. I hope this will help you. Bernhard Stief]]>

I moved into my house in Palm Desert 7 years ago, and ran Ethernet to every room including my Entertainment Center. It took about 5 years before a good Electronic Component used the connection in the Entertainment Center. This was a Buffalo DVD Multimedia Player, years ahead of AppleTV, and it streams DVD quality video with no problem. Now all we need is some good non-proprietary video to stream. AppleTV gets all the Press, but it can’t hold a candle to the Buffalo Player, playing proprietary software will never cut it.]]>

Do I smell even a taint of Microsoft sponsorship or at least bias in these Linux Myths articles? Why not make these comparisons: 1) Which product has 3rd party file system support, allowing major advances in performance and stability? 2) Which product actually "is" multi-user right out of the box? 3) Which product has been able, from day one, to prevent privileged code execution? 4) Which product does not need elevated user credentials in order to run any end-user application? 5) And as for speed...let me ask, how could a product with a one-gigabyte plus in-memory code base possibly be faster than one with under a couple of hundred killobytes? What kind of tea are you guys drinking anyway? This article is a myth.]]>

I can still do a bit of programming on a good day. Pity it can’t make the coffee. I have long been of the opinion that the internet would slowly take over the job of providing household entertainment and communication, I am still positive that it will. It is revolutonising the way people study and will continue to play a growing role in this area. Surrogate vs. Natural Primary Keys I don’t want to start a yes/no comment session on this article, so I’ll safely remain in the middle with the opinion, ’it depends on your situation’. We should consider this a strange answer for an exact science of ones and zeros. I want to bring to your attention a risk related solely to using a natural primary key. Scenario 1 The business operations changes and your natural primary key stops being a primary key. If you’re trusting that a field will be a primary key forever you’re probably looking towards a massive application change. With surrogate PKs chances are you will not have to change anything. Scenario 2 Assume you’re using product codes as primary keys. Your company decides to rename the product codes to standardize worldwide. If you’re trusting on the product code as a primary key you will have to change every table containing that product code. You will also run in relational trouble since PK-FK relations will not allow you to just change one table at a time. With surrogate PKs you have to change only the main product table. (disclaimer: Not considering historical data and the need to keep old product codes) My conclusion In this ever changing world, you’re never sure that a field will remain a primary key for ever. For this reason, by default, I use surrogate identity fields. If you really want to play safe you should even use guid fields as a surrogate PK to be prepared for decentralization scenarios.]]>

By no means will I try to imply that you are exaggerating or blatantly making that account up. But I will say that has to be the most non-typical opinion of the company I have ever seen. Heck, they invented the concept. Copycats in the industry sound like what you describe - test prep regurgitating sessions. They even warned me about such companies when I signed up. I think that they are a Microsoft Partner. I’ve since found that other copycat companies often risk litigation fromMS for their practices. I know they are classier than what you describe because I went to their DC class, my friend Paul Marquardt went to their Florida class, my buddy Tom Menasco went out west somewhere (I can’t remember where right now) - the list goes on and on. The formula is simple, 14 days straight dawn to dusk, lecture, labs, group study, total emersion. Is it INTENSE. But you come out with an exceptional knowledge enhancement (even if like me you already knew the products and concepts for the most part) and 95% of the time you also come out with an MCSE. These guys don’t push illegal test preps, they discourage it in fact. Someone in class brought up test king and the instructor (Kelly Morrison - awesome) was quick to remind us that these types of test prep are often filled with errors and under high risk of being sued. Some have even speculated that you could have your MCSE revoked if MS ever subpoenaed their records. But that’s another story. In my case the hotel was nice, but not distractingly so. The classroom was at the hotel, you took your tests at the hotel, they brought the food in, there were plenty of snacks and drinks all the time. They made it as easy as pie to focus on nothing but getting your MCSE in 14 days and leaving with the concepts you needed. No "paper MCSE’s" ever walked out of mine or any of my friend’s classes or we would stop recommending them. Yes, they are on the pricey side, but you get what you pay for. You’ll be proud of your MCSE, I sure am Chris]]>

Hi,just a comment for Charles Claunch should you read this - I’ve had problems with intel server boards not showing the full 4GB of RAM under Server 2003. Intel said this was due to device drivers using some up (?!). Anyway, if you boot machine with the /PAE flag in boot.ini you should then see the full 4GB in OS (works for me on a number of servers), something about it letting the drivers map above 4GB mark, but I don’t have a clue how that works. Utterly a waste for all sides involved. All the debates were getting old too until recently when Ballmer made his strange statement about Linux infringement on intellectual property. But Microsoft may have more than just Ballmer as a problem. Vista is too little too late, Zune is a dud, and their deal with Universal may be a colossal miscalculation. Training and Certificationhttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/services/training-and-certification#commentsAnchorSat, 07 Oct 2006 05:45:53 GMT
In August 2004, I attended an MCSE boot camp at Intense Schools. They’ve since been purchased by Vigilar. Some of the same people are there. This is absolutely the worst IT company I’ve ever dealt with, regardless of the company catagory. HORRIBLE. The arrangements of the class where a lie - we were supposed to be in the Residence Inn, instead they never made reservations, so we ended up in a horrible dump hotel with tiny rooms. It never got any better, even though they eventually did get into the R.I. (and made it sound like they did us a favor). The meat of it, the instruction, was dismal. The training computers were so old and slow, it truly wasn’t worth the bother. The instructor was far below par, and far worse than any other I’ve ever had, and this course was not cheap. He was unresponsive to questions, seldom stayed late to help students, frequently belittled students who asked "dumb" questions, yet let others drivvle on and on about their mostly irrelevant scenarios. He just didn’t lead the class very well either. I did manage to pass - largely due to the highly illegal brain dump practice exams they wrote for use to use. Running on a server via ASP pages, you couldn’t take a copy with you (of course!), but the "practice tests" VERY closely emulated the actual exam questions - a no no in this industry. I mean, company names, scenarios, questions and answers. When I took the exams, I literally new the answer because I had seen the question before. It really was that much of an exam rip. Heck, I walked out an MCSE, and I had NEVER INSTALLED AD, Never created/implemented a group policy (and didn’t know how). I wouldn’t have been able to tell you the basic tool to use for most of that stuff. Basically, I was disfunctional as an actual MCSE, I just regurgitated test answers. Total paper MCSE. Something I abhor in the industry.]]>

Bypass surfControl URL Blockinghttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/security/bypass-surfcontrol-url-blocking#commentsAnchorFri, 01 Sep 2006 00:59:51 GMT
Everybody, it’s not SurfControl stopping you from going to web sites. It is because your organization chooses to block you from going to these sites based on their Acceptable Internet Usage Policy. If for some reason you are being blocked you need to let the administrator at your organization know that you need access. The administrator can easily add that website to an allow rule for each user, group of users or the whole organization by simply dragging the URL and dropping it into the rule. Simple. So, I would suggest that if you are going to complain about being blocked that you know what your organizations policy is on internet usage, Playing games and shopping are fun, but cost billions of dollars a year in lost productivity, internet security threats such as Spyware, Malware, phishing, hacking, you name it! In addition, confidential data leakage, legal liabilities, non-compliance. The internet is not a toy for a business, it is a tool that helps generate revenue and keep the business going. If you do not own your own business then imagine that you do, what if your employees were playing on the internet all day and you were paying them $10.00 an hour, plus insurance, vacation, etc. So really you are spending about $20.00 per hour and that is conservative. If a single user spends 1 hour a day for recreational surfing for a month that will cost your business $600.00 per month in lost productivity, Now imagine that you have 50 employees that spend an hour for recreational surfing, that will cost your business about $30,000 a month in lost productivity, The more the users the more the loss, the more the internet threats, liabilities, opportunities for data leakage, etc. So think about it as a business owner before you complain about being blocked.]]>

Avidian Uses Outlook as Its Platform.http://www.windowsitpro.com/article/news2/avidian-uses-outlook-as-its-platform-#commentsAnchorMon, 02 Jan 2006 09:44:45 GMT
It promises a lot both from the great marketing Skills that Avidian Makers of Profit seem to have. I have spent the last four days compiling a thorough review of this product for our own sales needs. The notion that you do not need technical support to install this product is farcical. The supplied manual is minimilist with no troublshooting section. There is no trouble shooting section ( other than one geared for the most basic of problems ) on the website. The hours of support ( or sales for that matter on their website are not adhered to either. I spent hours and hours trying to get the programme to do something fundamental..recognise my contacts folder and it wouldnt do it. It seemed to keep losing information , which then reappeared randomly. All in all, i dont recomend this product, which is a shame really , as it has lots of promise and seems to nearly be there. I do not like to post a negative review and have considered doing so carefully. I would give it a review score of 3/5. I will update this review when i can , if Technical support decide to get back to me.]]>
