Hi. I am referring to an article/comment/question listed above by a Sidonie Ho (way back in 2000). I am actually trying to locate Sidonie - we were university mates a long time ago. If any of you read this and know her, can you please pass on this message? Or if Sidonie you read this, could you please get in touch with me? Thanks, Sylvester at syljlim@yahoo.com]]>

The first sentence in the "Intrasite replication" section on page 2 states: "Replication between domain controllers in the same domain (i.e., intrasite replication)..." Not so good: "domain" and "site" concepts are confused. Regards Morten]]>

Troubleshooting with NetMeetinghttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/remote-computing/troubleshooting-with-netmeeting#commentsAnchorThu, 27 Apr 2000 16:01:01 GMT
L. J. Locher’s "Troubleshooting with NetMeeting" (March 2000) is very informative. My company has been trying to use NetMeeting to communicate with our Asian vendors since last year (to save long-distance phone charges). We’ve had little to no luck with the process. We have a proxy server in our single-domain network environment, a design that doesn’t agree with NetMeeting’s optimal design. No one outside our proxy can call in to our network because of the proxy server. We’re experiencing a lot of difficulties calling someone on the Microsoft Internet Locator Service (ILS) directory. Microsoft technical support suggests that we use direct IP address dialing, but we don’t always know that part of the information before we call someone. Will Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server resolve this issue? I read Spyros Sakellariadas’ "Exchange 2000’s Conferencing Services" (March 2000), but I don’t think it mentioned a proxy setting. Do you have any other suggestions? --Sidonie Ho]]>

To establish the outbound connection when you set up a NetMeeting connection through a firewall, you must configure the firewall so that the required IP ports that Table 1 lists aren’t blocked. You must configure the firewall to pass through primary TCP connections on ports 389, 522, 1503, 1720, and 1731. You must also configure the firewall to pass through secondary TCP and UDP connections on dynamically assigned ports (1024 through 65535). --L. J. Locher Table 1: Required IP Ports
Port        Outbound Connections     Function
389          TCP                                    ILS
522          TCP                                    User Location Service
1503        TCP                                    T.120
1720        TCP                                    H.323 call setup
1731        TCP                                    Audio call control
Dynamic  TCP                                    H.323 call control

Online Educationhttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/training-and-certification2/online-education#commentsAnchorMon, 09 Aug 1999 10:27:45 GMT
The article "Online Education" was informative but failed to adequately cover perhaps the most popular method of learning and preparing for the exams: self-study. A combination of the right study guides and a home practice network can often be more beneficial than working through a CBT or attending a class. Sites such as MCSETutor.com, Cram Session and Checkpoint MCSE all offer free information to help self-studiers. In addition, advice and answers to questions are provided at various discussion boards on the Net. The best part about self-study is that it is vastly cheaper than instructor-led training or CBTs. Cost is a prohibitive factor for many people and has traditionally been a barrier to people desiring to enter the IT field. Sites and books geared towards the self-study crowd have done an excellent job of removing those barriers.]]>

Nice article. I have experience with both kinds of training you mention -- I have used, and continue to use, both ZDU and CBT Systems self-paced courseware. The important things for either type of training? Setting aside dedicated time for your studies; and having access to the hardware and software you are learning about. Reading about Windows NT Server or SQL server will help little if you don’t have access to a copy. Hands-on experience is vital to passing the exams.]]>
