Hi nainiu001, If I’m reading your comment correctly and you’re looking for a script to list all users’ logons in a local domain, you might want to check out these articles: — "How can I create a list of the most-recent computer logons?" (http://windowsitpro.com/article/articleid/99937/q-how-can-i-create-a-list-of-the-most-recent-computer-logons.html) — "Finding a User’s Last Logon" (http://windowsitpro.com/article/articleid/96302/finding-a-users-last-logon.html) — "It’s 10:00 P.M.: Do You Know Who’s Logged On?" (http://windowsitpro.com/article/articleid/95922/its-1000-pm-do-you-know-whos-logged-on.html) — "List Locally Logged-on Users" (http://windowsitpro.com/article/articleid/94278/list-locally-logged-on-users.html) The last three articles are usually open to subscribers only, but in case you aren’t, I’ve opened them up for public viewing through Dec. 31, 2008. I hope the code in one of these articles is what you’re looking for. Thanks for reading Windows IT Pro! Karen Bemowski, senior editor Windows IT Pro, SQL Server Magazine]]>

Finding the proper names of objects is not very easy. Doing a search of technet will help find the names - although I had significant trouble locating the names as well. Writing to a file can be done two ways, programatically and using msdos: Dim ts Dim fso Set fso = WScript.CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") On Error Resume Next fso.DeleteFile("C:\output.txt") On Error Goto 0 Set ts = fso.OpenTextFile(strFileName,ForWriting,True) ’ True means create the file ts.WriteLine "Hello World" ts.Close OR you can run your file with cscript from the dow window: cscript myscript.vbs > c:\output.txt The cscript will make the echo’s show up in text in msdos and the > c:\output.txt will write it out to the file. Good Luck! ]]>

This does NOT tell me what I want. I need a script that will tell me the PROPER [NAMES] of all the objects, and all fields/attributes for those objects; i.e., adsuser.name, adsuser.description, etc. "name" and "description" are two field names for the ’user’ object, for example. What are all the other AD object names, and what are the field names associated with the various AD objects? How do I get a list of all those? Also, how do I do "write.file" instead of "wscript.echo;" i.e., to get the results to go to a file (without prompting me to press "OK", like these scripts do)?

The reason for this is because the reference to the HTML file needs to be changed. You will find that the HTML file is probably not on your server in the same place as it is on your local machine. What is happening is that the HTML page is not being instantiated in the Browser and thus all refernces to objIE.document.[object] are failing.

Hi! You mentioned the following in the article: "You can’t use VBScript to access all the read-write attributes. For example, ADSI returns the ObjectSID attribute as a byte array. Unfortunately, VBScript understands only variant arrays, which renders the returned data useless. As a result, you must use Perl, Visual Basic (VB), or C++ if you want to use ObjectSID."

I’m trying to search for a specific objectSID using LDAP, and I’m using VB.NET to run the search. Might you have any idea what the objectSID type would be in order to search for that user in the directory (e.g., convert objectSID byte array into a string? or search for the hex alphanumberic values? or something else?). I’ve been making baby steps in my application and this is possibly the last hurdle. I’ve attempted a number of things--even hardcoding my objectSID’s ASCII value--but nothing worked. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Jerermy - If you check MSDN, you’ll find that the Object-SID is described here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/netdir/adschema/w2k/A_objectSid.asp?frame=true. Its syntax is 2.1.1.17, which according to the page at http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/netdir/adschema/w2k/syntaxList.asp is a String(Sid). If you click the String(Sid) link (http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/netdir/adschema/w2k/S_String(Sid).asp), you can see String(Sid) is the type ADSTYPE_OCTET_STRING and the variant VT_UI1 | VT_ARRAY. You can find out more from MSDN at http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/netdir/adschema/schemahelp.asp. Hope that helps.

Sneha - No, I’m afraid you cannot disable the sAMAccountName. As this MSDN page http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/netdir/ad/naming_properties.asp indicates, it’s an important property for Win2K servers and needs to be unique on a per-domain basis. It should be less than 20 characters to support downlevel servers and clients. The exact definitions are here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/netdir/adschema/w2k/A_sAMAccountName.asp

You need to come back with a bit more information. I’m sure that what I’m about to say is not the answer that you’re looking for. If I’ve missed the mark, please can you rephrase what you need.

1) If you want to use SMITHJ rather than John Smith in the displayName you only have to worry about uniqueness in the sAMAccountName.

2) This was the MS code:

Dim grp As IADsGroup
Set grp = GetObject("LDAP://CN=Administrators, CN=Users, DC=Microsoft, DC=com")
grp.Add(LDAP://CN=John Smith, OU=Sales, DC=Microsoft, DC=com)

2a) This VB code is broken, it should look like this:

Dim grp As IADsGroup
Set grp = GetObject("LDAP://CN=Administrators, CN=Users, DC=Microsoft, DC=com")
grp.Add("LDAP://CN=John Smith, OU=Sales, DC=Microsoft, DC=com")

2b) In VBScript, changing John Smith to SMITHJ looks like this:

Dim grp
Set grp = GetObject("LDAP://CN=Administrators, CN=Users, DC=Microsoft, DC=com")
grp.Add("LDAP://CN=SMITHJ, OU=Sales, DC=Microsoft, DC=com")

3) You commented that my example has the same issue. Not sure I’m following you there, but the line of VBScript code as you’ve written it has bugs and should look like this:

Set adsGroup = GetObject("LDAP://cn=Managers, ou=Sales, dc=nt5domain, dc=mycorp, dc=com")

What you’re looking for is an ’object browser.’ There are a number of ways of doing this, but let me tell you what I do.

1) Run up a copy of Visual Studio (or Visual Studio.net) and use F2 to open the object browser.

2) Run up a copy of Office 2000 or XP. On Office XP, go to the Tools...Macros menu and open "Microsoft Script Editor" or "Visual Basic Editor". Use F2 again - or if that command doesn’t work, use the View menu to get the object browser up. On Office 2000, you still need to go to the Tools...Macros section, but I can’t remember the exact app you need. You can always create a blank new macro from here and choose to edit that, this will get you a window that you can get to the object browser from.

Having done all of this, you then need to open up the object that you want to look at. You’ll find hundreds on your PC - have fun!
