Yea you can have only a root CA. having subordinates are mainly for organization and security purposes. Big companies may have a different sub CA for diff departments, or an external CA to keep the root CA protected. Best practice is to keep the root CA offline and have the sub CAs hand out certificates.]]>

I havs a problem. We want to use certs to authenticate the computers before network access is granted. If a device fails authentication, they are given internet access only on a special VLAN and at a limited bandwidth. The Enterasys switches are configured for 802.1x authentication and we tested using PEAP before we proceeded with this CA solution and everything worked fine so we know the switches are functioning fine. We are a child domain of the parent and are installing CA. The root CA has been setup after which we installed the sub CA in our domain. This went fairly smooth. The ISA and Radius services are functioning fine with no errors in the event logs. The sub CA was used to generate the cert for our workstations and we have turned on auto enroll to test. Our test computer received the cert but it does not show in on the sub CA MMC under "Issued Certs". Some other systems like our DC’s do. When we connect the tes pc to the network, if fails vaildation with the following error: "Windows could not find a certificate to log you onto the network". We have gone through it all and can not find the cause of this problem. ]]>

I face this problem and cannot solved. pls any one help I have gone to the Server and created an OU. I then created a user called "test" within that OU. I then went to the properties of the OU, Group Policies tab of the properties and created a GPO with some very simple configs for testing (disabled the "My Documents" folder on the desk top. When I go to a win2000 client machine and log on as user Test the GPO doesn’t get applied. I have even used the gpresult tool and it looks like only the local policies are being applied. Do you know what might possibly have been missed? Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to provide. biplobk2000@yahoo.com ]]>

The Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit and the Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Resource Kit both contain a utility called Cache Mover (cachemov.exe), with which you can relocate the Offline Files cache. As you point out, the cache folder resides by default in the \%systemroot%\csc folder (e.g., C:\winnt\csc—csc stands for client-side cache). Using Cache Mover, you can easily relocate this folder to any local hard disk volume. ]]>

Leo - I guess that depends on you needs. A typical router/firewall isn’t much of a DHCP Deamon, typically you can’t reserve leases. And what’s more important if you reboot your router it don’t save the leases. If you only have a small network to manage (1 subnet) it doesn’t matter that much, otherwise a Win2k og win2k3 is a much better choice. Or even if you only have a small network, but have the server anyway, why not use it? I know I would.]]>

There is a Group Policy setting called "Files Not Cached", which can be found under: Computer Config > Admin Templates > Network > Offline Files > Files Not Cached In that setting, you can specify what file types you don’t want available offline. Since it’s common practice to block database files (which includes the extensions you provided), it makes me wonder if you used a wizard to set this up (Small Business Server 2k/2k3 maybe)? If so, I would be interested to know what tool you did use, and what else it blocked?]]>

A well thought out and informative article, but it’s missing a few key items that are needed for a successfull install. You need to make the disk an MS-DOS boot disk, which is a simple task (Which everyone is known). Also it would have been helpfull if you would have included a list of the "technical" names for applications so you can choose to install them or not. All in all a great article that helped me get through an unattended installation (And I’m just a co-op student at a tech company :)]]>
