Interesting note about Magic Jelly Bean Finder is that version 1.5.x would cause a red flag in most anti-virus programs. Unsure the reason but one feature it has is that it can change the serial number and/or registration information for Windows XP and 2000. But this required something to run in the background.]]>

Re the vibrant in-text advertising: Absolutely not workplace appropriate for audio to fire up when I accidentally moused over the link. What does a link for ’affordable price’ in a review of a workstation computer, have to do with a noisy ad for a ABC TV show? Poor window layout design to have the browser window require a scroll in order to find the close button for the ad popup. If I see more of this I will definitely reduce use of the windowsitpro.com site.]]>

One thing not mentioned is that the Filezilla server does support FTP over SSL/TLS, so the Filezilla client and server combination can be used to quickly set up a moderately secure file transfer site. OpenSSH does set up a more secure communication link than the Filezilla server, but OpenSSH does require a bit more to set up. J]]>

Let me say this for one, business users are not nearly as vulnerable as one may believe, but still vulnerable none-the-less. This is because most businesses have dedicated connections to the internet, and the connection tunnels through this way. However, home users are especially at risk, since many of them use CABLE INTERNET. This is a shared line, so someone that had the proper equipment, or the know how could easily listen in on the line and intercept anything they were looking for.]]>

Carl Campos Going to try to keep this simple. There are a couple of ways to do this. One would be how you described it, by compromising physical security. A more realistic approach that I have done during a pen test is to do ARP poisoning. This is also known as a type of MITM (man in the middle) attack. You send out ARP packets to ’poison’ the nearest router and the host (or router and router). By poisoning these devices (making them think that they are sending traffic to legit devices/systems when they are not) you are now able to intercept the traffic. Just Google "ARP Poisoning" is you want more clarification.]]>

I am also using NetModem with SBS 2003, and have found it to be considerably more robust then the modem pooling included in SBS 2000. NetModem includes support for user authentication and SSL encryption between the server and clients. NetModem also lets me control what phone numbers are allowed to be dialed, and logs all phone numbers dialed to a database. Another plus is there are no client limitations.]]>

Some bonehead took this idea and installed IEAK to our entire Customer Service department. He was since fired and now I want to manage the client computers using Win2k3 Group Policy, which is the right was to do it. With Group Policy, you can manage such settings from ONE place and have it affect all users and/or computers contained in an OU (organizational unit). For example, clicking TOOLS, INTERNET OPTIONS, the "home page" is grayed out ... along with many other options on the various tabs. How the heck can I revert to the original, base install of IE? Can I simply remove the customizations? ]]>

I tried installing the WSUS one our Windows 2000 Server doing the updates that are listed in the article. I ran across a problem that is becoming a more common problem. When using SQL server desktop, WSUS install only gives me an option to choose a database to use (not create a new one). This is limiting because the only database on this server is one that is being used by our tape backup and I want to keep these databases separate. I haven’t been able to figure a way around this as of yet.]]>

There’s a group policy that you could configure for sus server address, which I’m assuming will work with wsus. I’ve upgraded to SBS2003, using a third party Modem Pooling solution found at http://netmodem.com. Its working very well and shares our modem pool with inbound connections from RAS and outbound connections by the netmodem clients. We are still using the Fax server which is still included with SBS2003. James McMurry]]>

Thank you for the fine article. It prompted me to get off my duff and finally play with Snort. I’ve found the most integrated (i.e. easy) way of getting started is to use EagleX from EngageSecurity. They package all the goodies together. ACID, MySQL, IDSCenter, Snort, etc. It installs simply and is highly configurable. Once running, the Snort detected something very interesting. While surfing YOUR site, I was subjected to a portscan and attempted buffer overflow attack against real networks products by your banner provider, DoubleClick. I could probably prove that it was an intentional act to install spyware on my system. Thanks for the education (on several fronts). Please do something about your vendor’s behavior. Disaster Recovery with Dfshttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/administration-tools2/disaster-recovery-with-dfs#commentsAnchorTue, 11 May 2004 09:11:32 GMT
In response to Mike Bedford’s comments: After setting up your root targets, links, targets, and finally the targets that you want to replicate to you can disable referral on the targets that are for "backup" so that edits don’t occur on the secondary target. Make sure your root targets exist on DCs at each site (in case the WAN is down) and make sure that each site also contains copies of the "backup" targets. Note that fail-over to a "backup" set will require an administrator’s intervention to change the DFS referral for each target to any "backup" copy. Recovery from failure could be hairy if you have multiple locations editing different "backup" DFS copies. I think DFS "disaster recovery" is best suited for single-locations that want cheap (and somewhat manual) fault tolerance. Make sure you run your backups off of the "primary" target or you will end up in trouble if DFS/FRS fails (sadly, I speak from experience).]]>

After reading Douglas Toombs’s "Web Monitoring Solutions" (April 2003, http://www.winnetmag.com, InstantDoc 38276), I started noticing a consistent trend with the Windows community in general. The subject of free (or open-source) tools rarely makes its way into the articles. I realize that this is a Windows-based magazine. But I know firsthand that having a tool that does what Ipswitch’s WhatsUp Gold does for free would be a great tool.

In addition to the tools that are listed in the article, you need to add Nagios (http://www.nagios.org). Yes, it runs on Linux, but in a small shop, any old hardware would be able to monitor everything. I monitor 400 servers with more than 1400 services. I need multi-tier escalations, the ability to log Help desk tickets, and the ability to launch scripts against the Windows boxes to repair failed services if necessary.

A few years ago, I worked in a small shop in which I was the only IT guy. I would have killed to have this tool. Our company had no money to spend on WhatsUp Gold or any other tool like it. I’m very interested in the open-source movement because it often offers excellent products that cost only the time that you invest implementing them. If there is a tool that is just as good as a commercial product, Windows & .NET Magazine should present it even if it runs on Linux.]]>Andy Stein Thu, 15 Jan 2004 12:04:56 GMThttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/internet/web-monitoring-solutions#commentsAnchorUse a VPN for Wireless Securityhttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/dhcp2/use-a-vpn-for-wireless-security#commentsAnchorThu, 15 Jan 2004 10:10:30 GMT

The author never sems to finish an important point made in the article of using a primary/backup relationshipo when using DFS. He says its good practice to do so, but never clearly demonstrates how to use only ONE copy of the DFS root as the primary, and only use the the backup copy in the event of a catastrophe. With an AD-enabled DFS root, how do you force users to use one copy versus the backup copy? Also, if the the domain controller is not accessible (say in a remote office who loses its WAN link to a centralized DC), but has a file server local (a primary DFS replica), will the users still be able to access the data (assuming an AD based DFS root)?]]>

The author writes that a drawback to Windows Installer installations is that you can’t change the installation parameters. Good news! You can modify the properties for a Windows Installer (.msi) database with a Windows Installer transform (.mst) file.

After you create an .mst file with customized parameters, you can deploy it with the TRANSFORMS property of msiexec.exe. The Microsoft article "How to Use Property Reference Command-Line Parameters with Msiexec.exe" (http://support .microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/ q230/7/81.asp) documents what to do. The command

msiexec.exe /i MyApp.msi TRANSFORMS=MyTransform.mst

installs the MyApp application with the customized parameters in MyTransform.mst.]]>

We all know each of us is the undisputed king in our own minds. So instead of saying negative things about the author why don’t you write something up with your own time and post it. Strahd....]]>

while mahmood jaffer realizes the implications of migrating domain controllers, he does not seem to understand the logic behind this, maybe a quick tutorial from me would help.]]>

Configure a Win2K VPNhttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/windows-2000/configure-a-win2k-vpn#commentsAnchorFri, 22 Dec 2000 12:00:26 GMT
Great Article!! I only wish It would have been published about 2 months ago while wrestling to establish a VPN in record time without to much knowledge. It was a Bear trying to sift through all the Info Microsoft has out there on VPNs and to simplify the steps needed to accomplish this. Douglas Toombs does a super job on simplifying the process for setting the VPN up and he is right: Although setting up a VPN can be a complex task, after it’s working, it’s a very cost-effective means of keeping offices connected. During my progress with the VPN one questions popped up: What toll does the PPTP / L2TP encryption overhead exact on the speed of let’s say a T-1?...]]>

I’m an employee of a large aerospace company, and I’ve been reading a copy of Windows 2000 Magazine that the company provides through its periodicals library. I received the September issue (my name was third on the routing slip), and in the table of contents, I found several articles I wanted to read. Turning to Douglas Toombs’ "Configure a Win2K VPN," I was very disappointed to find that someone else had cut out the article--a testament to the usefulness of the magazine!

Today I ordered the magazine for myself at home--no more missing articles or receiving the magazine after other people have gone through it. The online access is a definite bonus.

Encrypting Internet Email with Exchange Serverhttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/encryption2/encrypting-internet-email-with-exchange-server#commentsAnchorWed, 04 Oct 2000 16:41:45 GMT
For those of you who have questions in regards to whether or not data ever gets intercepted as it crosses the Internet, here is the response from Mark Joseph Edwards at windowsitsecurity.com: "When you send data across the Internet, those packets travel over many networks. Anywhere along the route data can be captured. If someone wanted your data through PacBell, they’d probably crack a system and install some sniffer software--that way they don’t have to physically break in. This can and does happen all the time. There are countless news reports on the Internet of data being stolen in this exact manner." I hope this information helps. Thanks for reading! ]]>
