Hi, I use O’Reilly webboards for my support group from another source, renting it for $20. a month. I just want to be sure I understand what I’ve read. If I purchase this program, I can run the boards from my own home, placing it on my web site directly? You mentioned that anyone could post, but moderators would have to approve moderated boards. I would like to control membership by making each person a member, however, let them post directly. Is this possible? Would archiving also be possible? The webboard version I now use is 4.2. Is that version for sale as well? If so, how much will it cost?]]>

Michael P. Here is our main criteria for desktop faxing: The product should appear to the end user like a printer, not like an Outlook client. The reason? Even using email, people often forget to attachment the document they are trying to send. "Printing" to a fax printer solves this problem Of course, we would like inbound faxes to come to the email store. Also, we need Macintosh support. Anything that fills these needs? ]]>

Sharing Files Between NT and UNIX Systemshttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/interoperability/sharing-files-between-nt-and-unix-systems#commentsAnchorThu, 12 Aug 1999 15:39:14 GMT
Thanks for Michael Deignan’s great article, “Sharing Files Between NT and UNIX Systems,” in the March issue. Tally Systems makes PC desktop management products that are sometimes installed to UNIX servers using NFS. Our product’s executables and data files are stored on the UNIX server and must be accessed by our PC client software. File and directory permissions for a mixed client (Windows 3.1, Windows NT, DOS, OS/2, and Windows 95) base can be a nightmare. Your article is very helpful to my understanding of the NT/UNIX translation. Thanks.

Lone Wolf MCSEhttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/training-and-certification2/lone-wolf-mcse#commentsAnchorWed, 11 Aug 1999 14:18:39 GMT
I am administering a network running Windows NT Server 4.0 and Win95 client workstations. I am a programmer, but I’ve become interested in network administration. After reading Michael Deignan’s “Lone Wolf MCSE” (August), I became interested in getting my MCSE. However, I’m not sure which training products are best for my situation. I do not have the money to attend classes, and although it will require discipline, I believe I can learn through self-study products. I thought Sybex or Microsoft Press study guides would be a very good step. Do you think one of these products will prepare me to take the exams, or do I realistically need to get more preparation material (e.g., Transcender exams)?
--Tim Rose

Ultimately, the best training products are the ones that work best for you. Each person is different, with different study habits and needs, so I cannot pick any one product as the best for you to try. You will probably want to invest in some form of CBT system, with perhaps an exam simulator to help you prepare further. Look for my reviews in the August through December issues of the magazine for information about some of the products on the market.

I found the price listed in Lab Reports: “ERDisk 2.2” (July) misleading. I spent a morning testing the demo for the product and concluded that the product was indeed useful and well-specified. I went to the order page on Aelita Software Group’s Web site (http://www.aelita.com) and found that the cost of the product depends on the number of servers and workstations you need to license. My point is simply that I could have saved some time if the article had made the pricing structure more apparent. Take this suggestion as constructive feedback for future articles rather than just a moan; I find the whole magazine a must read.
