I can’t find any developer information on VIM from IBM or Lotus. Their SDK does not even cover the parameters that are passed into the VIM calls. It also seems very buggy, and that writing an e-mail agent in C++ using vim and Lotus Notes is just a bad idea. Why did Lotus invent VIM, and then destroy it?]]>

Is the Exchange Server SDK available as free download, anywhere? I searched the Microsoft site for hours, but I could not find a page, where to download. I allso need the SDK for Version 5.5. I do need the code samples for the ACLEDIT-sample. This is not included in the Platform SDK dokumentation, only in the "full SDK". Thank you. ]]>

Netscape: Hitting the SuiteSpothttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/internet/netscape-hitting-the-suitespot#commentsAnchorFri, 13 Aug 1999 14:45:08 GMT
From an article in a section called "News Analysis," I expected objective journalism from "Netscape: Hitting the SuiteSpot" (Tim Daniels, June 1996). Instead, the article is free advertising for Netscape. Phrases such as, "The future of corporate-grade business solutions," and "Netscape, which is synonymous with the Internet," sound as if Netscape’s marketing department created them. The deceptive price comparisons of the Netscape and Microsoft Internet Information Server solutions further demonstrate this bias. Netscape SuiteSpot and Microsoft BackOffice are different products with different functionality. The column lists Visual Basic (VB) and SQL Server on the Microsoft side--neither of which is necessary for a Microsoft-based Internet server. Other inaccuracies include the price of $695 for Microsoft FrontPage. In fact, it costs $149. In addition, you omitted excellent Internet solutions from Lotus and other companies.
--Randell Grenier

I really appreciate you comments. My purpose in this piece was to give my interpretation of the SuiteSpot announcement’s impact. As for Netscape being synonymous with the Internet--it is. Netscape was instrumental in advancing the Internet by making its power accessible. What’s your first thought when you hear Netscape? Be honest...it’s that spinning N on the browser. Although Microsoft conjures many images, Internet Explorer probably isn’t the first thing to come to mind. And Netscape was doing intranets when Microsoft thought the word was a typo. Bottom line--Microsoft woke up and smelled the Java, the competition between the two is healthy, and the ultimate winners are the end users. I disagree that BackOffice is very different from SuiteSpot as an Internet and intranet solution except that you need SQL Server to add the same functionality as Netscape provides with Informix worldgroup server. I think SQL Server is a much better product than Informix worldgroup server, but both products do the job. VB is questionable, but Microsoft touted it as the vehicle by which programmers would compete with Java programmers and rule the Web. Neither SQL Server or VB is absolutely necessary, but unless you want a static page, you need database connectivity and ActiveX controls or Java. I purposely excluded Lotus, Oracle, and others because a large-scale comparison was beyond the scope of the article. The price of Microsoft FrontPage was $695 at press time.

NT After Darkhttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/training-and-certification2/nt-after-dark#commentsAnchorFri, 13 Aug 1999 14:09:52 GMT
Thank you for trying Digital Equipment’s telephone support (Tim Daniels, “NT After Dark,” July 1996). I can understand any confusion you experienced with the multiple prices you received. Let me try to clarify the prices you heard from us. When you called, we had two sliding price structures for per-incident service. First, we differentiate between non-PC and PC platforms. We bill telephone support for multiuser operating systems such as Unix or OpenVMS at $200 per hour. Support for a PC platform costs $75 per half hour, with a half-hour minimum. We quoted you prices that incorporated a 20% uplift for after-hours support, hence the $240 and $90. This after-hours pricing scale lets Digital supply high-level support despite a lower call volume during these hours. Your experience brings out some areas of our customer service that we can and will improve. The information in your article will be a part of that improvement.
