Hi I have seen these instructions at Microsoft’s website, but I don’t understand where I should type this in if I want to batch update a single machine and I don’t have a network of any kind. My father has a WinXP Pro SP2 machine without an internet connection and I want to install about 60 updates for his computer without having to sit next to it and double click an update 60 times... Is there any way to do this automatically ? Thanks in advance.]]>

Comparing IMAP with POP3http://www.windowsitpro.com/article/tips/comparing-imap-with-pop3#commentsAnchorMon, 27 Jun 2005 11:12:41 GMT
I believe the first word of the second paragraph needs to be "POP" (not "IMAP") for this article to make any sense at all. IMAP is not useful in an offline situation at all! I also agree with the other reader’s comment that this article is too short and should elaborate much more. For what content it has now, it might as well just say "IMAP does more than POP".]]>

Automatically Deleting Files on a Shared Systemhttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/scripting/automatically-deleting-files-on-a-shared-system#commentsAnchorThu, 26 May 2005 00:54:44 GMT
Which scripting language is this? The familiar CD of the W2k command prompt does not allow another command on the same line. In fact, it would consider " Delete" (including the space) as part of the target directory name. Anyway, having a script delete all files in a dir seems more than aggressive enough to me. What if the dir change failed - could something else be deleted? In this case I would at most delete specific file types, such as *.ppt. Please also consider the possibility of an unplanned reboot during a presentation. A confused presenter losing the ppt could easily waste 15 minutes or more getting back on track. A far better solution is to have presenters bring their stuff on personal media (e.g. CDs or memory sticks).]]>

Mr. Heinonen is completely right. Access control through MAC-adresses is pretty much useless and doesn’t slow down hackers at all. Besides everybody is able to see what the network users send and receive! With an easy to use sniffing tool (a 10 year old is able to do that) it’s no problem to get sensible information, e.g. the mail passworts (POP3 is usually unencrypted). Furthermore as soon as one faked his/her MAC it’s quite easy to use tools like sslsniff and to record ssl-encrpted passwords like a lot of online stores and even banks use!! The only way to secure a wlan is to use encryption. There’s WEP and WPA availible. WEP can be broken - it only slows hackers down. One should use WPA, which is probably as secure as cables. So, damn, rewrite that article!! eXeSk]]>

While your right about Avaya not being more pro-active about supporting already-released products or SPs in the past, that should not be the case moving forward. When UM became MM they converged both the legacy and UM products into one product. So instead of having multiple developers working all on different products, they are now one big development department and can move things alot faster while giving the product more stability. If Avaya can’t help you (which it seems like the case more than 50% of the time), try asking for a qualified business partner of theirs. Business Partners have more freedom with the product testing and experience in ’real world’ customer environments. Don’t settle for the ’We can’t find the issue’ answer that Avaya seems to like giving out.]]>

If you combine Win2k server and WinXP Pro you will have to reconfigure your policy with the new adm file of WinXP. To do that open the mmc on a WinXP workstation (as a member of domain) and get the group policy snap in. open policy of domain and reconfigure folder redirection. I have had best results with redirection to standard profile path. Be aware that the group policy editor on the win2k server might give errors. you will have to configure future policy changes from a winXP workstation. regards, umber . ch]]>

So I installed Exchange 2003 and they still cannot get it to work. I can clearly see that Avaya support is such that they are gifting the business to the opposition. They have left their agents in the Sh** I am now told they have a patch for my Exchange box to allow their product to work. One wonders what standard Avaya software is made to??]]>

Good points. But there seems to be some fundamental issues in W32time besides this. As a general workaround you might include a "net time /set \\TIMESERVER /y" in the users logon script. For the servers I think I would recommend deactivating the malworking W32time and install 3.party time servers in stead. Or switch from Windows to Linux. Best regards Jens Laerkedal]]>

Recent email viruses—specifically, the Melissa and VBS.LoveLetter viruses—victimized my company. We have Symantec's Norton AntiVirus 1.5 for Microsoft Exchange on our Exchange Server system. Try Symantec Enterprise 9.0 and yuo’ll love it. It’ll be your first brick in the wall of your intranet with no pains for your system performances. Trendmicro is good but is heavy for performances. by from Rubino thanxx a world NTFAQ !!!]]>

Solving a Web Site Access Problemhttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/dns/solving-a-web-site-access-problem#commentsAnchorWed, 27 Oct 2004 23:56:30 GMT
I have to say, that it’s really annoying that a new feature is enabled by default which mysteriously breaks DNS in some sporadic cases. I’ve been dealing with this problem for the last 6 months with my client, and have looked like a fool because I haven’t been able to solve it, or find any technical documents which explained "random connection failures to some domains, sometimes". Your well crafted article immediately caught my eye. I implemented the solution and the DNS problems have magically disappeared. Thank you! ]]>

I have a NT and Novell domain, user log into the network he gets his mapped Novell drives, and it maps the NT server drives but when you click on the NT drives says that he doesn’t have access to the NT domain. I see he has a IP address, no rights have changed or anything else. ]]>
