10 reasons to have (not buy!) linux: 1. its free 2. its secured on level that windows would never be 3. that system was desined for network its compatibile with windows, unix and so on 4. i had never found hardware that linux wasnt compatibile 5. hehe, windows is portable? where is linux suport for programs like msoffice, media player? 6. yes linux is compatblie with windows but not vice versa ;) 7. linux also is internet integrated, dms like KDE and GNOME are highly internet integrated. 8. KDE is easier, faster, less buggy and much more customable than explorer. 9. if i wana play Dvix/Xvid,DVD on windows i have to download 10 random codecs and pray it works ... in linux i just install system and all works :-) 10. i would say, bash, streaming ... windows in scripting is fairly better than DOS, linux is just 2 levels above it ... Free, Fast, Stable ... but of coz not perfect, but i prefer not to buy buggy product for that prize as windows is in shops ...]]>

Hello, Is there a software that can scan an exe file for viruses before I download it to my harddrive? This may sound like a stupid question, but if you think about it, it has serious commercial significance. All online enterprises that are selling, for example, compiled ebooks, are suffering from the public’s reluctance to download an exe file. Thanks for your attention. You can search for dvdewup.exe from the Creative download page and the driver will come up. Why we have to search by the filename and not have it available in the regular download menu is a mystery since it doesn’t really cost much to link to another location on the site . . .]]>

The drivers available for Windows 2000 (the WDM drivers) work just fine in Windows XP. I have been using my DXR2 decoder card and drive to this date without problems in WindowsXP. You will have to download the updated drivers and application software update though. Search for a (about) 4.8MB file called "dvdewup.exe" on google.com or some search engine. Creative seems to have taken it down off their web site. It includes the player software AND the driver for the DXR2 decoder board. One place you can get it is from "http://www.cdrom-drivers.com/drivers/41/41381.htm" but you will have to register. I don’t like registering. Anyway, good luck! Once you get the driver you are good! WinXP just needs the WDM driver.]]>

Exchange Server Antivirus Softwarehttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/antivirus/exchange-server-antivirus-software#commentsAnchorWed, 15 May 2002 14:53:31 GMT
I agree completely with your article in that a server side AntiVirus solution is a truly effective defense. However I completely disagree with the statement "The most important criterion in an Exchange antivirus solution is frequent virus-definition updates"; this is the LEAST important criterion; the most effective products are those which filter attached files based solely on their extensions. If you eliminate all executable file attachments from all email it becomes impossible to transmit a virus via this vector regardless of how up to date your definition files are. There is also the added benefit of being able to eliminate resource wasting video and audio file attachments using this method. Eliminating stored audio and video alone more than paid for the cost of our file filtering software in a couple of months.]]>

Most sites have only 1-2 apps per server. However, many of these application modules sell for more than $1,000 each (in addition to the base charge for the software agents.) When you are done adding it up, The Argent Guardian usually costs about 50% of what other players charge. With regards to network traffic, the bandwidth usage is minimal at best. (The Argent Guardian and AppManager communicate with the "master consoles" in an identical manner.) We have customers like CGU Insurance in Foxboro, MA using The Argent Guardian to monitor over 550 servers from two master consoles and they see a minimal impact (less than 2%) on network traffic. ]]>

Exchange Server Management and Monitoring Toolshttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/monitoring-and-analysis/exchange-server-management-and-monitoring-tools#commentsAnchorTue, 08 May 2001 14:06:19 GMT

Jonathan Chau’s Lab Reports: "Exchange Server Management and Monitoring Tools" (Spring 2001) reviews BMC Software’s PATROL 3.4 for Microsoft Exchange Server. Overall, the reviewer seems impressed with PATROL’s functionality. He begins his summary with "PATROL is a thorough and comprehensive Exchange Server management utility." You can understand our surprise when we read the concluding statement in which the reviewer says, "... I don’t recommend this solution."

I’ll address two concerns that the reviewer raises. First, he mentions the product’s "complex deployment process." The reviewer installed many optional components that provide great value to large enterprises but that aren’t required for basic Exchange Server monitoring. Installing only the base components would have taken the reviewer just a few minutes and provided functionality similar to most of the other products in the review.

Second, the reviewer states that competing packages are less complicated or less expensive than PATROL. The product currently presents common measurements simply and clearly on the default main desktop. Regarding price, the review includes two products*PATROL for Microsoft Windows 2000 Servers, which lists for $815, and PATROL for Microsoft Exchange Server, which lists for $695. Without the W2K module, pricing and functionality would be comparable to the other products reviewed. However, BMC recommends both products to provide comprehensive management of the entire server.

Constructive criticism helps us devise ways to improve our products for our end users. Although PATROL includes a bit more complexity than you’d see in a performance monitordriven, Exchange-specific management tool, PATROL is part of a comprehensive suite of products that provides complete end-to-end management of the enterprise.

Unless you are running Exchange, SQL Server, and web services on one server, you won’t typically purchase more than one application module per server. Also if you need to monitor an NT workstation server the price of Argent is at least $800 PER SERVER!!! That is not cheap! Also not being agent based would cause an excessive amount of traffic. Agent based servers don’t send info back to the console unless an event is generated. With Argent, the excessive polling would be tremendous. I think I will stick with NetIQ.]]>

Desktop Antivirus Software for Win2K Prohttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/antivirus/desktop-antivirus-software-for-win2k-pro#commentsAnchorFri, 16 Feb 2001 12:56:44 GMT
The view of Symantec’s Norton AntiVirus 2000 that Jonathan Chau presents in Lab Reports: "Desktop Antivirus Software for Win2K Pro" (Winter 2000) is unfair.
In March 2000, Symantec informed me that the only versions of the product that it planned to support on Windows 2000 Professional (a business-class OS) was Norton AntiVirus 7.0 and later. My understanding is that Norton AntiVirus 2000 is actually version 6.5 (a consumer edition).

The comparative review you mention focused on desktop antivirus products for small-office and home-office environments. Thus, we tested products targeted at consumers rather than corporations. The Lab has rechecked the documentation and press literature that Symantec’s press relations firm supplied with the product for our tests under Win2K Pro, but we see no qualifications about using the product with that OS.

Jonathan, I wish that you had related InoculateIT 4.5 to the antivirus software that you comparatively reviewed in your December 1999 article entitled "Exterminator Tools". I also wish that you had kept your standards consistent. For example, in the "Exterminator Tools" article, you describe ServerProtect as being "fast" because it scanned a "12GB test disk" in "only 40 minutes". In the present review, you describe InoculateIT 4.5 as "not speedy" because it took "more than 25 minutes" to scan a "10GB SCSI volume". Assuming a consistent linear relationship, the InoculateIT scanning rate would appear to be much faster. I would greatly appreciate more comparataive and objective reviews of products in the future to better guide my company’s purchases.]]>

We have a Small Business Server v 4.5, w/ Exchange Server 5.5, running InoculateIT 4.53 and the 9/15/00 Real-Time Monitor drivers. Here is a short list of problems it has caused for us. InoculateIT regularly trashes the dhcp database, causing users to lose remote access and Internet access until the dhcp database has been rebuilt. InoculateIT has caused mysterious file permission errors in Office2000 SR-1, causing Word files to become corrupted, or causing users to be unable to save files to the Server. InoculateIT has caused the Exchange Information Store to stop on a regular basis. This not only kills email, but also kills the nightly backup if it occurs during a backup. And finally, although the Server auto update is working, I have never been able to update the workstations as promised. This is a promising product which is very poorly supported. They rarely issue fixes for these problems, although they are well documented in the Open Forums on cai.com. Caveat Emptor, ]]>

None of the programs that were tested found all the polymorphc viruses. How many polymorphic viruses escaped detection by all the checkers? I have resorted to keeping more than one virus checker on my system. Only one checker is enabled for real-time checking to avoid conflicts, but the others are useful to run (mostly redundant) scans every so often. My theory is that what one checker misses, another checker may catch. The answer to the above question could shed some light on the effectiveness of the redundant scanner approach for the especially paranoid among us. Thanks.]]>

On that note I wanted to pass along instructions for installing Inoculate IT on NT Terminal Server because this process can be very frustrating if you try to figure it out yourself. At least it was for me. Here it is: 1) Create a folder on drive M called InoculateIT 2) Copy the entire CD ROM image into this folder 3) Remove the ’Read Only’ attribute from these two files: a) M:\InoculateIT\Bin\License\Install.isc b) M:\InoculateIT\Bin\License\Install.rsp 4) Modify Install.isc as follows: [directories] "T","O","M:\CA_LIC","M:\CA_LIC",......C:\ is changed to M: "W","O","M:\CA_LIC","M:\CA_LIC".......C:\ is changed to M:5) Modify Install.rsp as follows: [destination path] 1, "M:\CA_LIC" - again change C:\ to M: 2, "M:\CA_LIC" - again change C:\ to M: [caapps_path] "M:\CA_APPSW" - C:\ to M:6) From a command prompt issue "change user /install" 7) Run the setup utility from the directory M:\InoculateIT 8) After installation is complete set the Realtime Monitor to "Fast Scan," "Scan Incoming Files Only," and "Cure File" when virus is detected. These settings are necessary because you will bring the server down if it is trying to scan all files.]]>

I think in evaluating anti-virus packages, you should point out the quality of support from the vendor and the costs of support options. In relation to Computer Associates, their support is a major drawback to choosing InoculateIT for any organization. CA has a notorious reputation for lack of support for their products, and this should be taken into consideration when choosing an enterprise-wide application, as you will need their support from time to time. Coming from a previous site that utilized InoculateIT, I had to personally deal with CA, and it was like pulling teeth to get help. At my presesnt employer, believe me, I would not even consider InoculateIT, sole for their lack of ood support of their product.]]>

Windows NT Magazine is the only technical magazine that I would miss lunch for, and that is exactly what happened today. I turned to Jonathan Chau’s Lab Reports: "Exterminator Tools" (December 1999) to see what the article said about Command Software Systems’ Command AntiVirus 4.57, which I purchased last year. I don’t agree with a couple of the author’s statements in the review. The author states that the product doesn’t offer paging options. I agree-- but who wants a product to page you? If you have a well-mannered antivirus program, your immediate attention isn’t needed. The author also states that the product doesn’t automatically retrieve definition updates. In CSS Central (the server-side program), you can find a Schedule button under Update, Configure FTP, Local Configuration. When you properly configure CSS Central, it will automatically download the latest definition files, component updates, or complete product updates. At each logon (or at 4:00 a.m. if users leave their systems on overnight), CSS Central will push needed updated files to the clients, without any user intervention. I agree with the author’s assessment that CSS Central is poorly documented, but Command Software Systems provides some of the best technical support in the software business. If I have a problem and can’t find the solution on the company’s Web site, I call--and the support is still free. --Tony Hale]]>

Internet Explorer 3.0http://www.windowsitpro.com/article/internet/internet-explorer-3-0#commentsAnchorThu, 12 Aug 1999 13:29:15 GMT
I read with great interest Jonathan Chau’s November review of Internet Explorer (IE) and Netscape Navigator. One point kept bugging me as I read the article. My dealings with Microsoft (even as a former employee) prove the company does not care at all about supporting NT on the client side. They have never released a decent browser on NT 3.51 and require NT 4.0 to get IE 3.0. But not everyone can go to NT 4.0. It will not install on our DEC AlphaServer 4100, even though it is on the compatibility list. Nobody at Microsoft seems to have tested this system. Digital is responsive and aware of the problem, and a new BIOS update will be out soon. And many other applications do not run on 4.0, especially server software. Our shop is NT through and through, running the entire BackOffice suite, except SNA Server. The only non-Microsoft boxes here are two Digital UNIX boxes that act as a firewall. When we started letting our internal users surf the Web, we gave them all IE. Although we have a T1 line and only 10 users, surfing the Web was so slow that a 14.4Kbit-per-second modem was faster. We thought something had to be messed up in our internal networking. We worked for days trying to figure out where the bottleneck was. Turns out that no bottleneck existed. We installed Navigator 3.0 on my machine, and everything started working—fast. Using Navigator on other boxes, both NT and 95, had the same results. Navigator was working the way it was supposed to, and IE was not. So, I posted a couple of messages to the Microsoft news server. I received several responses from others stating they had discovered the same problem. IE was falling apart when dealing with firewalls, whereas Navigator was trucking along just fine. No response from Microsoft at all. We have now standardized on Netscape Navigator. Sometimes the best product does not come from Redmond, as we are now learning. We are also evaluating other products to replace components of BackOffice. NT seems to be the only best of breed in Microsoft’s package. Keep up the great work. We love your magazine.

Workstation Virus Scanning Software-Antivirushttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/antivirus/workstation-virus-scanning-software-antivirus#commentsAnchorTue, 10 Aug 1999 13:40:35 GMT
Jonathan Chau’s November 1997 review of antivirus products included Command Software Systems’ F-PROT Professional for Windows NT 3.0. The article included errors. Mr. Chau stated, “F-PROT Professional comes with a thin manual that you can throw away once you’ve installed the software.” The manual was the Quick Start Guide. When we sent the software to the magazine for review, the final manual had not returned from the printer but was supplied on disk. We sent a printed copy of the manual as soon as it was available. The review goes on to say “This scheduling tool is not as comprehensive as the schedulers in other products,” but the author does not quantify that statement. Command’s F-PROT Professional contains a powerful scheduler as an integrated part of the product rather than a separate program that you must load. You can schedule each task independently resulting in multiple scheduled scans, and you can set scans daily, weekly, monthly, and after minutes of inactivity. The most damaging claim is Mr. Chau’s reference to an experimental heuristics analysis module that he claimed was alpha-level code. Command’s F-PROT Professional for Windows NT contains no such module. Command is an established, reputable development organization, and we never consider delivering a commercial product with alpha-level code. Command’s F-PROT Professional has one the easiest-to-use interfaces and one of the best disinfection engines in the industry. We believe that antivirus software should be unobtrusive. The goal is protection rather than pizzazz. And in that arena, even Mr. Chau agrees we succeed. Unfortunately, due to the errors in the review, the opportunities to prove that will come a bit more slowly.

Workstation Virus Scanning Software-Antivirushttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/antivirus/workstation-virus-scanning-software-antivirus#commentsAnchorTue, 10 Aug 1999 11:47:44 GMT
Your reviews are usually well done, so I was surprised to read inaccurate information on Dr Solomon’s Anti-Virus Toolkit in Jonathan Chau’s November 1997 article, “Workstation Virus Scanning Software.” The updates are not only quarterly; Dr Solomon’s offers a monthly update service to which many companies, including mine, subscribe. They also have a free service that provides email notification of new viruses. In the future, I will have less confidence in the facts stated in your reviews. I was also surprised that the review covered only the standalone workstation versions of these products. Enterprisewide multiplatform virus-management systems would have been more relevant to your readership, though more complex to evaluate. The prices are equally of little interest to those working in corporate IS and certainly no basis for determining value-for-money, because the enterprisewide pricing is always substantially different.
--Michael Wild

Although Dr Solomon offers monthly updates, the monthly update service is provided at additional cost. The other virus packages provide updates as part of the initial purchase price. In the case of Dr Solomon, the cost of purchase entitles you only to quarterly updates. We elected to cover what you get with your initial purchase, not what you can get through additional service add-ons. Regarding your larger question of standalone workstation versus enterprise coverage, our readership is interested in both environments. Covering workstation virus software does not mean we will not also cover enterprise-based virus checking software in future issues. We will indeed do that.
