Great article. It has been 5 years since I went searching for another job and I did all of these things. I actually found a job from a recruiter who had seen my resume several times. I kept my resume fresh by learning new skills. I would change it to reflect current possitions. Then when sending my resume for a specific job, I would make sure to include specific verbage from the job specifications in my cover letter and resume. Best of luck to anyone looking for a job.]]>

That's why I've created a Linkedin Group called Applied Tips and Techniques which the goal of showing the results products from using what we know. From the IT practioner perspective, managers should be able to identify the skills to be learned from taking a course and measure the progress on the job after a period of time. ]]>

Why the Motorola Xoom Will Succeedhttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/mobile-and-wireless2/why-the-motorola-xoom-will-succeed#commentsAnchorWed, 09 Feb 2011 12:42:50 GMT
I think you pronounce Xoom "X - OOM", as in Exhume ;)

I’ve tried out Honeycomb on the Google Android emulator, and even discounting slowness due to emulation, Android 3.0 seems to offer nothing significant that isn’t on the iPad or expected on the iPad2. Yes, Android is more open, but that’s easy to fix on the iPad by just jailbreaking the thing, at which point you can run a slew of apps that give you access to the innermost iPad capabilities.

I’m no marketer, but it seems to me that a new product, such as an Android-based tablet, needs to give buyers some huge advantage of the iPad to get any customers from Apple’s slice of the pie. I was hoping to see some great new user interface paradigm in Honeycomb, but no, it’s just Android 2.3 warmed over.]]>

I think the key is going to be how quickly honeycomb apps for pads get out there. To me this has been the key to Ipad’s success. The Ipad is barely ok from a tech standpoint, but the apps have made it a huge hit. If Google can convince people to jump on the bandwagon and productivity apps and serious business apps get out quickly, then I think it will be huge. One thing I’m looking for is an app to control Power point remotely so that I can see what’s on the screen and control a remote PC all from my Xoom. The product looks like a winnder to me.]]>

I have spent sometime in the industry and I agree with you absolutely. I have come to realise that before one can specialise in an area of IT one have to learn a lot of other things that make up that specialisation. ]]>

IT innovation is moving so fast, the need to specialize in order to remain current is greater than ever. However, the need for a broad and current understanding of the field is also prevalent and helps to make one a valuable asset.

When I first read your article, I though you were saying "focus on one thing." However, upon re-reading, I think you are saying, "build your personal brand on a single segment of the IT field".

That makes sense, yet I think a dual approach is worthy of consideration: focus your personal brand in a single IT segment, but also focus on a broad understanding of the leading edge IT technologies and methods. You will gain some flexibility while still enjoying the benefits of specialization. Remember, your chosen segment could be supplanted in just a year or two by some new innovation.]]>

Apple has first mover advantage with a slimmed down operating system and the appropriate hardware.

However, Microsoft understands how quickly the capacity/performance/price of solid state disks is improving. It also understands how quickly the power/performance/price of CPUs is improving.

What it needs to do is improve the operating system and application load times of Windows. It also needs to better touch enable Windows and Office. I am sure that this has been happening since the iPad launched, if not before.

I have no use for a new device on which to consume content. I have TV and radio for that.

When I am using a device, I am always creating content and anything less than a full sized keyboard is an ergonomic liability for someone like me who grew up never having fine motor skills. The 15.6" wide-screen display of a laptop is smaller than I prefer, even for consuming video.

My next purchase will be a 27" wide-screen LED monitor for the computer. I will wait a few more years for the rate of change of flat panel TV technology to slow down before I buy my first wide-screen TV.]]>

Rotman - Thanks for sharing. Having it included as part of your service seems like a nice add-on...it’s your data that you’re paying for, you should be able to use it how you want!

Van Alstine - Yes, I agree. While I have little insight into the business nuances of running a telecom service, it definitely seems like "you pay once for the bandwidth and once for the privilege of paying for the bandwidth," as you said.

I appreciate you both taking the time to chime in on this.

My other comment on tethering is that I feel the prices charged by wireless carriers are unfair. In the ’old days’ where 3g internet was unlimited, I could understand the carriers charging an extra fee for tethering as you would probably be using more bandwidth than from the phone by itself. Now there are usage limits, so if you tether and download a lot, you’ll be paying for that bandwidth. So it’s a double fee, you pay once for the bandwidth and once for the privilege of paying for the bandwidth.

My Android phone add the built-in ability to tether. This was great as I could easily tether to any pc. Of course, this bypassed the carrier’s payment system, so in an over the air update, they removed the phones native tether capability. So now the pc I want to tether with must have carrier software installed. Not bad on my own pc, but if I’m out with friends/family and want to tether with their pc, I can’t.]]>

Tethering works great. And while I agree there is probably some bandwidth loss, the speed is still fine for email and web browsing. For a lengthy session of web browsing, I’d much rather tether than do it directly on my phone.]]>

Nice article.

In Canada, tethering is generally included as long as you have a multi-GB data plan. I use it for the cottage where I get 3G but there is no high-speed land line available and line-of-site/sat is expensive.

Configured my iPhone first via USB and now via Bluetooth. With Bluetooth my iPhone can be at a good-signal location (faster) & my notebook just connects wirelessly from anywhere!

With the simple iPhone tethering configuration I was fully operational in under 2 minutes.

Cheers]]>

RIM Acquires DataViz and Popular Documents To Go Apphttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/mobile-and-wireless2/rim-acquires-dataviz-and-popular-documents-to-go-app#commentsAnchorSat, 02 Oct 2010 21:00:27 GMT
As long term customers (3 of us in this family), we’re trying to look upon this in a positive light hoping the new owners will expand the development and improve customer support. DataViz development has been innovative in the past, but over time became myopic in its product development. This is an outstanding time to expand the horizons of the development team.

It is my hope DataViz and RIM will provide support to customers in migrating from Password Plus to a suitable replacement. Unless, of course, they see the value in continuing to develop (especially for the Android) this extremely useful application. ]]>

I own HTC Evo 4G and i bought this for quick spur of the moment photo’s and for times a dslr is too bulky to carry around. When i used the HTC Evo 4G I wasn’t expecting it to blow me away. I simply wanted a functional compact camera with good features that has half decent image quality. If you want a camera where the image quality is to "impress" people then quite simply no compact will never cut it. Compacts are generally for the weekend photographer or party photographer. They are not aimed a the "I want to impress with my photo’s"crowd.I would happily recommend the HTC Evo 4G to anyone who is realistic about what they are buying. If you want a compact that performs well and has decent but not outstanding (that of a dslr) image quality then you could not go wrong with the HTC Evo 4G.

Review: pmPoint 7.0http://www.windowsitpro.com/article/services/review-pmpoint-7-0#commentsAnchorTue, 01 Jun 2010 16:53:48 GMT
Hi Brian,
Thanks for the article. It played a role in my choosing pmPoint for my client, the City of McKinney. McKinney had a complex project management workflow with no digital system (except for native MS Project) in place for managing tasks. The implementation took 3 months but has made a huge impact on their project management office and IT’s corporate culture.

In addition to standard project-type items and reporting dashboards, I was able to easily write custom reports that show city-wide IT expenditure in each Gartner category (Run, Grow, Transform) and do a what-if analysis showing resource utilization up to 12 months into the future.

IT gives IT the ability to accurately project a proposed project’s completion date and explain (with real data) when and why they’re overloaded.

I liked the project so much, I actually quit my job and started up entlead.com to do it full time. :)

Anyway, thanks again, keep up the good work.

Smartphone Remote Control Without User Presence: For Good or Evil?http://www.windowsitpro.com/article/mobile-and-wireless2/surerc-smartphone-remote-control#commentsAnchorMon, 10 May 2010 09:45:54 GMT
I received the following point of clarification from 42Gears:

"SureRC supports VNC authentication which means that the device cannot be remotely controlled without user permission. Admin can access the device only if the VNC password is known. Once the admin knows the password, user cooperation is not required. This works the same way as RealVNC works for desktops."

So in other words, while the strength of the solution is that it can reduce user interaction, you still need the password to access the device. I’m sorry for any confusion or misunderstanding I caused. ]]>

Every time I see quotes/interviews with these guys, they are full of misleading info. Smells like classic vaporware...

For example:

"articulated naturality" -- this is a term that these guys made up. It is not used by any researchers or companies outside of QuaderoPateo and has no meaning within the AR community.

"articulated naturality has 4 camerastwo facing outward, two facing the user, so the user can accurately depict his environment and see any information in relation to that person’s location,"

Or "in the definition we made up, you have four cameras". But why two forward facing and two rear facing? Are they really processing stereo video to better understand the 3D scene? If so, why not just say so instead of all the marketing BS??

"So if Im standing on the corner of 42nd and Broadway, I would see an ad for a retailer in perspective to where I’m looking and not just in an inanimate space."

This is just what Layar etc all currently do right now, today, oddly enough using GPS and digital compass...

"So we use Compass GPS accelerometer and Wi-Fi triangulation to actually determine a user’s location down to approximately three meters, which is fifty times more accurate than GPS."

No, 3m is GPS resolution (outdoors anyway). Are they really claiming that GPS is only good to 150m (~200yds)? I think Google, Garmin, TomTom et al would disagree.

There are a bunch of other non-facts and misrepresentations here too. I heard that they raised a chunk of money, but the whole project fails to pass the sniff test...]]>

This is a review of The Real MCTS SQL Server 2008 " 1.0 out of 5 stars Very poor quality, July 9, 2009 By Belter (Los Angeles) - See all my reviews I am now at Chapter 4. I started of with being disappointed with the print errors but this is just a poor quality book. There was clearly no QA. Example is pages 150-151: Exercise 4.8 gives you the exercise but the steps were left out. You can find the solution in books-online but you really have to know what you are doing to find it. On the same page, is a section titled "The SQL Server Configuration Manager" where you are reminded that Surface Area Configuration tool is replaced by Configuration Manager and it sort of describes how to get to facets. This is inaccurate. To get to facets, you start from the *Management Studio*. I am amazed at the poor quality. I sure hope I can still pass the test." Any other suggestions for Study Guides. New IT Pros: Chart Your Careerhttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/training-and-certification2/new-it-pros-chart-your-career#commentsAnchorMon, 23 Nov 2009 09:41:59 GMT
Here’s some great advice a reader sent me via email: "I’ve been working in IT for over 20 now. When I was younger I admit I was geeky, and lacked all the social skills that geeks are famous for. Here are a few tips that I would pass along to the younger generation. #1: Learn the art of conversation. I’m not just talking about giving presentations -- although it is a very helpful skill to have -- but learn to speak to anyone. People can do this easily by joining Toastmasters. I wish someone had introduced me to Toastmasters when I was younger. I have learned so much from Toastmasters, and have developed confidence in speaking to people and giving presentations. #2: Yes, learn business and marketing skills. Aside from the art of conversation, you need to be able to speak to managers and C-level executives in a language they understand. I work in IT security, and this was my brick wall...and then I learned to quantify information using Statistics. I still hate Statistics, but I can effectively get my point across quickly. #3: Learn to tie a full Windsor knot. I thought my wife was crazy when she had mentioned this to me, but I have to admit that a full Windsor knot looks so much better than a half Windsor. It takes practice, but it has a more professional look. A full Windsor knot with a Trump dress shirt has worked me. I recommend this YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfv782Ix8zI&feature=channel #4: There’s more to life than computers. Yes, we make a living on computers but there is more to life than playing with servers, firewalls, and routers. No one is going to be on their deathbed saying, "Gee, I wish I had spent more time learning Microsoft Server X." Get a gun permit and go to shooting competitions. Learn to fly an airplane or skydive. Sit outside and enjoy nature. Go scuba diving."]]>

I would choose Jane because the job and the company seem fairly stable (i.e., they don’t really change that much), the position calls for someone with good people skills and the ability to troubleshoot and make decisions as quickly and thoughtfully as possible. Also, I did not get the impression that Jane would have difficulty learning new skills and technology. If anything, I take would assume that she has amassed quite a few skills over the years and must have mastered them. Otherwise, she would have been booted out of her last job. As someone already pointed out, Trevor is young and willing, but he lacks experience at this point. So this job would be too much for him without some degree of mentorship and training. Greg would have been the ideal employee - except this job seems fairly limited in career growth. Likewise, the company is small, and doesn’t seem to be concerned about growing any larger. Greg would top out after a few months, become bored - and then there would be nowhere for him to go, technology-speaking. Greg, I think, would make an excellent consultant or contract worker for this company. Let’s face it - after he has fought whatever fires that have arisen, the company won’t really need him, and neither will he need them.]]>

Who Would You Hire?http://www.windowsitpro.com/article/training-and-certification2/who-would-you-hire-#commentsAnchorFri, 30 Oct 2009 17:35:03 GMT
If all we know about the applicant is written in the article, this is what I feel: Trevor: He brings a willing heart, may/may not be easy to teach and you may save some money hiring him, but this position needs an independent, experienced and error-free (relatively) decision making mind, which Trevor won’t have (prepare to babysit). Also young people, in my experience, are quicker to jump ship at the slightest bump in the road. Also troubleshooting problems is a skill acquired thru years of work, not given by diploma. We have the money so why am I buying the lower end of the scale, think I will PASS! Greg: He brings years of good experience, is a top notch problem solver, plus a go-getter. Ready made for the job it seems. Why is he now applying for a much lower responsibility than his previous job? And what’s the story on the job hopping? If I felt there was major personality clashes in store too, then I’d have to PASS! Jane: She brings loyalty, competence and personality. Great! LIke Trevor, where are the technical troubleshooting skills, since she’s mostly been an administrator? Why did she apply for a troubleshooting/analysis job? She might work better in the HR dept, so for this job again I’ll PASS! Now if these three represent the best candidates and we are forced to choose among them, I’d do this: Give each candidate a full week of 40 hours to work in the position. After each week is over ask each candidate to report their position and then poll the *other* employees about various aspects of candidate work performance and helpfulness. From the gathered information, make your decisions. With this method, I get valuable work performed and the candidates get paid plus we find a much better fit for our company (which is our main priority).]]>

We love text messaging. I have it set up so my server sends me text messages if I have any outages and we use it to text staff. We will not deploy blackberrys, too expensive, plus we are global. We have been using a company , www.redoxygen.com. They were the only vendor built into Microsoft Outlook and could deliver to Sprint/Nextel. Service seems to work well]]>

Obviously the robber wouldn’t "twit" that. Social networks are interesting, in a tiger kind of way : They are beautifull but you don’t want to get too close, because they are dangerous... You just have to figure out who you want to send IT to, and how you will get them to call you. If they call you then procedure(interview); Oh and don’t write "Resume" at the top of the page in 24. Greetings, Well, as vote #100 now we can get a clear percentage. I went with Trevor, and he actually won with 35% of the votes. But any good mathematician can pull numbers out of his ***, so here is why I would have chosen Trevor : The young guns (specially ones that are praised all around) are just waiting to be molded to your liking. This one looks like a blue chip so teaching him won’t be a problem. He’s got the social skills, wich are much harder to teach. Go with a natural in this field. You’ll score this guy on the low end of your salary fork, so the bosses will smile at you. They won’t like you, they will just smile at you. But hey, aren’t you an IT manager ? Have Fun ! Greetings, Well, basically if you’re in the IT business to make money, you are evil. If you are good, you are a non-profit organization. As for Apple specifically, they are an interesting case. They have become some sort of religion for their followers and that’s just enough to get you a batch of people hating you. Hmmmm, 50% of the poll thinks all of the above are evil. As a statistician, I can tell you 95% of made up statistics are false. Conclusion : People will love you, even if you’re evil. You just have to be their kind of evil. Have Fun ! Ah, I see. Yes, many community colleges and technical colleges have facilities where you can take certification exams, and all you have to pay is the fee to take the exam (varies by exam, but should just be about $100-$200 in the U.S. for most). If you go to http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/certification/cert-overview.aspx, and then hover over Take an Exam and click Find an Exam, you should be able to search exams. Once you find the exam you want to take, click on it, and there should be a link to find a test site in your area. If you go the boot camp route, for instance, then the price of the exam will be rolled into the cost of the class. But you can also just study on your own time and then take the class once you feel that you’re prepared. Hope this helps! Thanks, Brian]]>

Jean-François, Thank you for your response! Here are my answers to your questions: 1. Best Quality Training: Obviously, as a journalist, it’s hard for me to verify the quality of a training organization. However, the boot camp organization I mentioned in my article, Mountain View Systems, has won several awards from Windows IT Pro, and I had the chance to meet with them in person. So for boot camp type programs, I would recommend them: http://www.mntview.com/ 2. Duration: This varies a bit. For product-based certifications (all of the MCTS exams, which are the first level) are tied to a certain product and version, such as SQL Server 2008. So, having that certification is still valuable even after the next version of SQL Server comes out, but staying current is of course a plus. As far as whether an older certification can be used as a pre-req in the newer, upper-level certs, it seems to depend. You’d have to contact Microsoft to be sure of what would qualify for a pre-req. 3. Let me direct you to Microsoft’s page with certification information for support techs: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/certification/mcdst.aspx#tab1. While Microsoft recommends the A+ certification, the company also notes that A+ does not serve as a pre-req for higher-level certifications. So, to improve your training, you could get a MCTS in a support specific exam (70-271 or 70-272), or you could just get a MCTS in a topic you deem valuable, such as Server 2008. 4. My understanding is that the fee to take the course is always about the same. However, different training options (booklets, classes, etc.) obviously vary widely in price. So, you need to consider how much personal attention you want, plus what you can afford, when thinking about getting the training to earn a certification. I hope these answers provide some help. Feel free to contact me at breinholz@windowsitpro.com if you have further questions. Thanks, Brian Reinholz]]>

Any other questions you can think of. Ok. What is the duration of certifications. As I understand IT you would have to take tests every ?? years ? Other question. Greetings, I am from speciality #2. Support is often overlooked or outsourced, wich is bad business. Lots of people often complain to me how they lack a connexion between them and the tech. A native language is a barrier breaker. Hire local techs, but beyond that hire techs that can explain what they are doing and how they fixed IT to the user. Most users thank you for a good explanation more than for resolving their issue. Have Fun ! (tm) Jean-François Thivierge Windows IT pro]]>

cfrandall, you’re absolutely right. Very sorry for the misinformation on that. When I previously met with some people in certification, I was told that MCITP is the level 1 (kind of like MCP but specific to the topic area) and that MCTS is the level 2. It sounds like those two must’ve been flipped either in their words or in my head. Anyway, thanks again for the heads up. Looks like I need a prep kit. :)]]>

Some misinformation in this article: Exams 70-432 and 70-433 are the technical specialist exams (MCTS), and MCTS precedes MCITPro on the certification path for SQL Server 2008. Agree with you. Netbooks are a solution looking for a problem. Get a high end 12" or 11" notebook that weighs about 1-1.5 kg; while it’s more expensive, it’s also superior to the netbook in functionality. Get a decent Symbian or WinMo smartphone to go with it, and you’re all set. I played with the new Vaio P today, and while the hardware is hugely impressive, it’s simply not useful enough to warrant a place in my backpack. No netbook is physically small enough to carry around in my pocket like my Nokia E71, and neither is it big enough to use comfortably like my 13" laptop.]]>
