PC Power Management is an active marketplace with the established players finding themselves facing stiff competition from innovative organisations.

A couple of notes since this review as done, Sparxent’s Verismic Power Manager (http://www.verismic.com) also support Windows 2000 devices and understands how to handle patches that require applying too. Hosting version now supports Wake-On-LAN across the internet.

With just a small amount of effort but a hugely impressive ROI people can make a big difference. With Hosting this can be amost immediate as no capital investment would be needed. We are successfully deployed around the world supporting business and government alike.

We built from the ground-up to do PC Power Management rather than grow from bolt-ons and still continue to advance our technologies to provide even greater capability.

Exciting marketplace with plenty of options to choose from.]]>

Using group policy or powercfg is the cheapest way to set windows power scheme settings, but you can never know if it has had the desired effect.

Unless you have a way to report on the power behavior and consequent energy usage both before and after implementing power management you can never know how much effect you have had.

Our research has found that sleeplessness (or as you call it insomnia) can affect up to 90% of PCs and for a 5000 workstation organization can cause upwards of $20,000 in wasted electricity per year.

It’s important with so many vendors to choose from to select an established product with a track record. NightWatchman from 1E is the acknowledged market leader with 12 years of experience and over 4 million licenses in use by more than 1100 companies in 42 countries.]]>

Power Management Software Helps Slash Energy Costshttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/news2/power-management-software-helps-slash-energy-costs#commentsAnchorTue, 17 Nov 2009 11:57:33 GMT
Hi, I was on the hunt for a tool that would automate the power options of all my PC and servers in my network. After some time I found http://www.itpowersaving.com. They provide a tool that can control all windows clients and servers in a network from a single console. I have setup my network that they power up on wake on lan. if a client is up it will wake up the file server and keep it alive so the users ca access the file shares. at night it will wake up the server, which then wakes up the client, makes a backup, installs updates reboots all with out interrupting the users. if pc s are idle it will put them into power saving mode. it monitors the activity and wont do it if stuff like presentations in fullscreen mode or cd burning in still going on. its basically hassle free and super easy to install. Also it can be rolled out to hunreds of PC in minutes. cheers]]>

The Great Debate: Should You Shrink Databases?http://www.windowsitpro.com/article/database-administration/the-great-debate-should-you-shrink-databases-#commentsAnchorMon, 16 Nov 2009 23:58:21 GMT
I believe for those against shrinking db, it is mainly because of concerns for bad performance thereafter. However on the other hand, there are tons of BUSINESS reasons that shrinking a db is a must due to various factors including the potential bug(s) of SQL Server itself. I have experienced quite a few scenarios requiring do db data file shrinking in the last two years. The mostly complicated one will take me too much time to describe here but I’ll just use a very simple one here, before SQL 2K5, in each of our DBs, we have a secondary file that stores BLOB columns, after upgrading to SQL 2K5, we decide to partition a few big tables with BLOB columns and put these tables on different data files other than the secondary file, and as such, the secondary file, about 1TB in size, has a "hole" of about 800GB, which we believe within the next two years will not be filled up, so what did we do? Shrink it ! For those who have never experienced shrinking a db data file, I would say it is a pity that your DBA life is not complete to some extent because shrinking a db file is not as easy as just type in dbcc shrinkfile, you also need to monitor whether your shrinking file process will cause any harm (like blocking etc) to your production. In the end, I think MS should revisit their dbcc shrinkfile / shrinkdb algorithm to ensure after shrinking db/file, there is no performance sacrifice. To those who need to shrink db / file, I’d say go ahead with careful planning and as a DBA, business continuity should always override performance concerns (which can always be tuned / improved later on, such as reindex, or index reorganization after shrinking etc)]]>

I must say that I’m with David Paul Giroux and Bill McEvoy on this one. We all aspire to have perfectly-sized batabases held on exactly the right amount of disk space including an amount for planned growth and/or contingency. However, in day to day running, situations sometimes arise when you either have to shrink a tlog to buy yourself some time to implement a long-term solution or allow an application to grind to a halt. Not necessarily poor planning, just s**t happens.]]>

I told Jim Turner about the error you’re encountering. He’s not sure why, but the Win32_Product class is not installed by default on Windows Server 2003. Although he hasn’t tested the following installation method on Windows 2003, he thinks it might do the trick: 1. In Add or Remove Programs, click Add/Remove Windows Components. 2. In the Windows Components Wizard, select Management and Monitoring Tools, then click Details. 3. In the Management and Monitoring Tools dialog box, select WMI Windows Installer Provider, then click OK. 4. Click Next. Note that a reboot might be necessary. I hope that does the trick. If not, please let me know. Karen Bemowski, senior editor Windows IT Pro, SQL Server Magazine]]>

On the subject: Q: In Windows Scripting Host (WSH), you can create a shortcut, but how can you read the properties of an existing shortcut? You can’t. The WSH object model control (wshom.ocx) doesn’t expose wshShortcut as a full automation object. You can expose wshShortcut only through wshShell.CreateShortcut. My comment: I was as frustrated by this as the original questioner probably was. However, I’ve found a way round it, even though it is ’dirty’. Do the following: 1) Get hold of the existing shortcut with fso.GetFile. 2) Create a new shortcut with wshShell.CreateShortcut and save it with .Save. 3) Copy the existing shortcut over the new one, using the Copy command, with overwrite set to True. 4) Now .targetPath, .Arguments, .WorkingDirectory, etc are available to your new shortcut object. Sample: Set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell") Set fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") Set ExistLink = fso.GetFile("existing-shortcut-filename") Set newLink = wshShell.CreateShortcut("new-shortcut-filename") newLink.Save existLink.Copy "new-shortcut-filename", True msgbox "TargetPath=" & newLink.TargetPath msgbox "Desc=" & newLink.Description msgbox "FullName=" & newLink.FullName msgbox "IconLocation=" & newLink.IconLocation msgbox "RelativePath=" & newLink.RelativePath msgbox "WindowStyle=" & newLink.WindowStyle msgbox "WorkingDirectory=" & newLink.WorkingDirectory As this page was the earliest one to be helpful in my search, I feel that you should benefit from being able to host this workaround.]]>
