I have never responsed to one of these before but I had to on this one. I couldn’t agree with the author any more, You have to look at certifications as an on going process. There will alway’s be a need for other cert’s down the road of anyone’s IT career, we all have to deal with this and move on. This will alway’s be a journey, period. There will never be an end to this. How often does technology change, technology is what drives the cert process.]]>

Certifiable Q&A for April 5, 2002http://www.windowsitpro.com/article/remote-computing/certifiable-q-a-for-april-5-2002#commentsAnchorFri, 05 Apr 2002 17:24:27 GMT
It appears that the explanation of the answer for question #3 (valid v. invalid DNS names in W2K) is incorrect. According to the explanation, all names would be valid. The answer merely states that the use of the underline character is "discouraged" and not prohibited. Thus answer "c" would fit within the RFCs as described. Likewise, the answer states that the characters a-z, numbers 0-9, the minus sign and the period are all valid characters according to the RFCs. If this were completely correct, answer E would also be correct. Getting through the material is difficult enough without exam questions which are (at the best) imprecise or (often times) clearly incorrect. Assuming that a site which wishes to coax it’s readers into buying the products which are featured, it’s highly inappropriate that the questions and answers would not be totally correct. Why would I buy a product with a Q&A which is either incorrect or incomplete? This isn’t a matter of a confusing question - it’s a matter of raw accuracy of the questions and the answers provided. Unfortunately, these inaccuracies appear to be endemic among the many sites/newsletters which are trying to coax the readership into purchasing the products which pay for the newsletters’ very existence. What’s even worse is that when a CLEAR error (heck, I might be wrong in my analysis above) is reported, no retraction is sent (in the majority of instances - there are newsletters from t*c*r*p*b*i*.*o* which sometimes issue retractions). Why should I waste my time clicking on the newsletters’ links when I can’t count on accurate information in the answers to the QOTDs? I realize that it’s a little incongruent to complain that a free resource provides inaccurate information, but there is so much confusing, conflicting and inaccurate information about the topics which one must master in order to achieve certifications that it’s appropriate to expect that sites which want to sell us certification tools will provide accurate information. That’s just my opinion. I may be misteaken, as eye’ve made miss takes bephor.]]>

Wow! Amazing how things (this article) exist when there are people like me thinking the same thing. Though this has nothing to do with MCSE certs, it does have to do with a certification. I had scheduled an exam this Friday, and realized that I was not ready for it quite yet. So I cancelled it and rescheduled it for a month from now. As Jonathan Bischke’s article so simply states: "The study process begins to change and the question becomes not "How can I pass this exam?" but "How can I learn this material?" This is exactly how I felt when I cancelled and rescheduled my exam. I want to LEARN this stuff, not just memorize it!]]>

Your answer to question 1 is wrong. The boot partition (c) is the partition which contains the Windows directory and therefore the ntoskrnl.exe file (item G). All of the remaining items are contained on the "system partition" which is also the "active partition" (d). So the correct answer is that only item G is contained on the C partition.]]>

Question says that C is the Boot Partition. Windows help defines the boot partition as: The partition that contains the Windows 2000 operating system and its support files. The boot partition can be, but does not have to be, the same as the system partition. See also partition; system partition. So C contains the operating system and support files, but the question then says that D is the active partition. Again resorting to Windows help the active partiotion is defined as: The partition from which the computer starts up. The active partition must be a primary partition on a basic disk. If you use Windows 2000 exclusively, the active partition can be the same as the system volume. If you use Windows 2000 and either Windows 98 or earlier or MS-DOS, the active partition must contain the startup files for both operating systems. See also basic disk; primary partition; system partition. The files, A—boot.ini; B—bootsect.dos; D—ntbootdd.sys; E—ntdetect.com; F—ntldr; and G—ntoskrnl.exe which are given as the correct answer are all essential to the startup process for Windows 2000 (or NT), and therefore need to be on the active partition (or system partition). The scenario given in the question this would require all of these files to be in the active partition (D), not C.]]>

Question 1 answer is wrong or the question is badly worded. If "The D partition is the active partition" means that the D drive is where windows 2000 is installed then ntoskernel.exe is on the D drive. If however it means that D is the partition that the BIOS will boot the system to, then ntldr, ntdetect.com, boot.ini (and bootsect.dos and ntbootdd.sys if they exist) would be on the D drive.]]>

Disagree with your answer to q3, although I understand why one might be tempted to select it. I think DHCP would have been the better answer, heres why: Admittedly Netbios resolution through Wins would be the prefered method of netbios name resolution verses updating the Lmhost record on each legacy client. The fact remains though, if you are not using DHCP, you would have to statically assign an IP address to each computer and maintain accurate records in case of computer relocations to different subnets. This makes the assumption that when you subnetted your network id that you have enough IP addresses for each subnet. Since there are other methods of resolving netbios names other than WINS and the lmhost file, I feel the preferred choice would be DHCP. As the Microsoft article states: Note To provide for the full use of DNS query as it is described in this section and used in the NetBIOS name resolution process for Windows 2000, you can selectively enable the Enable DNS For WINS Resolution for some earlier Windows-based clients, such as Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 client computers that support this option as a configurable TCP/IP property setting. Just a thought]]>

2. My title is Network Engineer. I develop, test, and implement Voice over IP call center solutions.
3. I am currently A+ & MCSE certified.
4. I plan on updating my MCSE and obtaining the CCNA this year.
5. I pursue certifications for my own professional development. The MCSE is currently a job requirement as well.
6. I use both Classroom and Self-study Training.
7. I’m very interested in the Cisco certifications, as we use Cisco products in our Voice over IP products and I work with Cisco routers on a daily basis.
8. I like that the Training & Certification update points me to MCSELive! threads. This is a very valuable discussion board where people can learn and exchange ideas.
9. I wish it would point people to the best resource for study materials, rather than just Amazon and Fatbrain. I have had excellent luck with both Bookpool and Provantage.
10. I prefer the summary and link format. That way, I have the option of getting more detailed information on a specific topic rather than having to wade through it.
11. I prefer HTML updates to text as long as it is tastefully done. I don’t like having to wade through banner ads and large headers and footers for a newsletter that I made the effort to subscribe to.

1. Yes, I’m employed in IT.
2. I provide 3rd-level end-user support, evaluate new hardware/software, develop automated OS installs (NOT images!), and repackage software.
3. MCSE -- but for purely pragmatic reasons, see question 5.
4. MCSE, W2K track
5. Financial gain -- I’m MCSE’d because my previous employer offered a $15,000 bonus to get certified. This time, it’s simply to remain certified.
6. self-study (not a kit; on-the-job training, playing around in a lab, etc.), some classroom training
7. Cisco’s certifications intrigue me, simply because I don’t have much exposure to infrastructure equipment; the CompTIA have a very low regard in the industry, IMHO; Novell is about on par with Microsoft in re certifications.
8. Getting news in one central location.
9. Nothing, really!
10. I prefer all content; damn near impossible to locally archive (and later search) linked content (are you passing this on to all of the other newsletters at Duke?).
11. Choice is better.

I am currently employed as a Network Analyse at a Just-In-Time Manufacturing plant.
I do not have any certificates as of right now, but I am studying for my first MCSE test.
I am pursuing my MCSE to try to better my career.
I used classroom training.
Other than Microsoft, I am interested in Cisco and Novell certification.
I like the newsletter just the way it is.

Thank You for all the good info- ]]>

Should You Wait for Windows XP?http://www.windowsitpro.com/article/training-and-certification2/should-you-wait-for-windows-xp-#commentsAnchorMon, 26 Mar 2001 16:12:53 GMT
I’m a 3.5 MCSE, having worked with NT4 almost exclusively since it came out. I didn’t re-certify in 4.0 as it was unnecessary, and my credentials didn’t suffer at all. It has been my accomplishments that is by far the most meaningful, not what color my MCSE is printed in that matters. Now I’m faced with Win2K full certification, no matter which way you cut it. I can only go as fast as I can get the time to do it, maybe never. And I don’t think it will be the worst thing in the world if it is never.]]>
