I want to use NTLM proxy authentication in Outlook 2003 when using RPC over HTTPS and not use "Basic" authentication. Basic always requires user & password credentials, and NTLM does not. However, NTLM authentication will fail unless the firewall allows traffic to passthrough directly to IIS and does not add any VIA: pragma to the http headers (such as ISA Server 2004). http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998943.aspx. But, I don’t have ISA Server 2004. Can regular old Windows Firewall be configured to just passthru traffic without modification so that IIS will trust the NTLM credentials provided by Outlook via RPC over HTTPS just like ISA 2004 does? Dealing with Databaseshttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/email/dealing-with-databases#commentsAnchorWed, 18 Jan 2006 04:04:48 GMT
Great information for me to understand the importance of letting Exchange take care of itself with online defrags! I’d like some clarification about two of the steps you listed for performing a file-system defrag when your Exchange stores are on a highly fragmented volume. (step 2.) When you copy the stores to another volume, do you just simply make a straight copy of them, or is this really a cut-n-paste operation to remove the stores from the volume entirely? (step 4.) When you copy the databases back to the newly defragmented volume, are you supposed to overwrite the original files? Thanks! - Kirstin]]>

System Attendant Caveat: I had issues getting this topology to work. I was running (exchange pre-sp1) in a front-end/back-end topology. To set this up, I followed instructions from different sources, including the CYA: Securing Exchange Server 2003 and Outlook Web Access. I couldn’t figure out why rpc over http wasn’t working, until I realized that the System Attendant service needs to run (MSExchangeSA) to update the ValidPorts registry key. If you hardened your Front-End server prior to SP1, you may have also done the same. Microsoft even recommended that this service be disabled, search technet for: "Services for Hardening a Front-End Server" After that it worked as advertized.]]>

This article is helpful in getting the concept. I do have the following inquiry though: 1) You mentioned explicit and implicit logon. Is it possible to restrict to just one? Say, I only one implicit logon. So if the users type in explicit logon then it will not work. 2) If I have two geographic locations say, one in NY and the other in LA and I want to use WLB/NLB for OWA logon. Two servers involved in Front-end servers one in LA and the other in NY. I want to have LA users logon through LA and the NY users through NY OWA Front End servers. In this scenario is the NLB/WLB is feasible? What’s your take on this?? I have DC, GC in each loacation. Thanks- Jaxy-]]>

Using an Exchange 5.5 Server as a Mail Switchhttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/internet/using-an-exchange-5-5-server-as-a-mail-switch#commentsAnchorSat, 22 Nov 2003 04:46:51 GMT
Sir, We are using exchange server for our intranet mail routing. We had one mailswitch server configured at our headoffice which will do the mailswitching based on the domain name. In our office, we do have unix servers, which are having smtp relay enabled. If we enable the smtp service in the local exchange server (to accept the user@domain.com) this information get replicated in all other mail servers and hence all mails will get routed to the local server too. This is not what we want. We want only the unix servers to relay to the local server, and all other client mails addressing the user@domain.com should go to the mail switch for proper rerouting tothe correcponding destinatin. So how can we avoid the domain replication in all connected mail servers in the organization so that the local smtp service will act exclusively for the configured unix machines alone ? regards, Arun.]]>

I am thinking about the move mailbox method, butI have a querie regarding existing accounts on the 2000 server. I am right in saying that I will not need to migrate users accounts because the 2000 accounts already exist. users logon through the 2000 server but have mailboxes on the NT4 5.5 exchange server.]]>

This article saved my life (maybe even JOB)!!! It explained very well exactly how to deal with the duplicate account problem when migrating exchange 5.5 to 2000. Microsoft web site gives you very general info about AD Cleanup util which is very useless. This article is definiately the best I’ve seen on the web. Thanks!!!]]>
