It’s interesting that the Web site led me here as an "anti-Vista" article, as it’s not, really. What I mostly read here is unhappiness with Office 2007 and in particular with that most benighted of email clients, Outlook -- a feeling that I wholeheartedly echo! -- not the OS. As to the problems with folder deletion, I’ve been living with Vista for two years now and have never seen that, so I’ve got to guess that you are (1) not given full admin control of your box (which is not bad, assuming that your IT staff can assist you) and (2) your system has been misconfigured by someone. If the IT pros "couldn’t find" your system on the network, then my guess is that, again, someone misconfigured it, as Vista has a very nice out-of-the-box feature that causes it to forgo the bandwidth-cluttering Computer Browser service by default. Have the IT folks check that the Computer Browser service is on, AND check that the right ports are open to allow both Computer Browser and Remote Assistance. All of those things can be done easily -- and centrally -- with group policies.]]>

I often have the problem Anne pointed out, too. After all these years, it just seems to me that the new versions of Windows should be increasingly bulletproof.]]>

I wish! Unfortunately, the decision about which desktop OS to use isn’t mine.]]>

But the switch over from XP to Vista and Outlook 2007 has been mostly smooth for some (dare I say most?) of our group in Penton. Although I have experienced some fun Vista (or Office 2007) quirkiness--like when I close a doc in Word, then try to reopen it in Explorer or Computer, I get a message saying the document is locked for editing by "another user." What’s up with that?]]>

I’d say stick with Win XP. I’m sure a few Linux zealots would say switch to Linux. :-)]]>
