Volume Shadow Copy Servicehttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/backup-recovery/volume-shadow-copy-service#commentsAnchorSat, 29 Jan 2005 15:16:57 GMT
Shadow copies are typically 10% of your used disk space. I’ve seen them grow as large as 20% but it all depends on usage. Shadow Copies are only enabled at the volume level. You cannot restrict to just a single share. As for SQL, I’m not entirely sure on that one. I don’t believe you can use the Previous Versions client to recover a SQL database, but maybe someone can shed some light. I know Exchange 2003 is a supported application, so when the shadow copy service is called, it asks Exchange to stop writing while the snapshot is taken. Again, with previous versions, I’m not sure if this is the case, but something like Veritas Storage Foundation that uses their own technology to perform snapshots actually leverages VSS in this manner.]]>

Excellent article. But it would have helped had the author continued on and discussed alternate OWA setups. I wanted to know if it was possible to set up Exchange 2000 and OWA on different servers or is it necessary for me to go with the default setup of Exchange and OWA on the same server? Nevertheless very interesting read and well written.]]>

What about VSS for SQL Server databases? Does it handle database files that are online?]]>

One interesting point is: How much disk space does each shadow copy process take ? If I have a volume of 100G will EVERY snapshot take 100GB ?]]>
