1. Challenge -- I can’t find a way to force "folders" in a Sharepoint document libary to sort at the top and files "under" then to also be alphabetical. 2, Sharepont seems a very cumbersome way to store files, but some now advocate using it for file storage. What’s the benefit over a common share area of a file server?]]>

Help for Moving to SharePointhttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/news2/help-for-moving-to-sharepoint#commentsAnchorThu, 19 Jun 2008 14:24:44 GMT
Thanks Steve for the interesting comments. I can certainly see why *NOT* migrating data to SharePoint could be a viable strategy for some companies. Of course it could also cause a revolt by the people that have to manually bring in thousands of crucial documents in larger enterprises. So there’s certainly a need for migration tools and bulk uploaders. I probably was a bit dismissive in the article about bulk uploaders, but that can easily happen when the write up is from a product briefing with a certain vendor. Certainly every company should do the research and find the product that’s right for their environment. I’ll be looking at and writing about other SharePoint migration tools in the future. And I’m really anxious to look at the MashPoint product. Thanks for the input!]]>

Julie Auletta, Director at Bamboo Solutions led a ’Birds of a Feather’ mini-conference on this subject at Tech Ed ’08. The Birds of a Feather sessions are informal, group discussions. A lot of folks from many different industries and disciplines showed up to talk about the challenges of migrating data into SharePoint. Bamboo Solutions is a provider of a Bulk Import Web Part for SharePoint. It’s one of our most popular products. (store.bamboosolutions.com) We also recently launched MashPoint, a data integration platform that enables direct linkage to external data sources from WSS or MOSS. However, one of the most popular strategies discussed, was simply *NOT* migrating data to SharePoint. More than a few administrators suggested making users bring in their documents by hand, using drudgery to discourage users from carrying forward old, unused files into the new SharePoint environment. One administrator went as far as suggesting that employees not be trained on the Upload Multiple Files capability of SharePoint to really thin the herd. I think this article is a bit unfairly dismissive of other bulk import tools. Bamboo’s List Bulk tool costs a mere $300.00, a fraction of what you might pay for similar functionality from Quest. You can dowload and try our product for free to see if it meets your needs. Thanks for the coverage of this hot topic!]]>
