In response to Joe La (sorry I’m so late): Did you crimp the network cable that runs from the basement to the 2nd floor? I think you should try to test it with a network tester, the type that test each wire individual 1 through to 8 for continuity. I suspect that maybe the 8P8C pug ends may be slightly warped and the network adapter on the PC may be unable to communicate with it, however the one on the laptop may be lenient enough to allow connectivity to occur. You may notice that the variables when you placed your PC in the basement next to the switch are 1) you used a different ethernet cable to the one in the long run 2) the cable has different 8P8C plugs (commonly and erroneously called RJ-45 plugs). The solution may be to recrimp the cable with a different crimper, the crimper may have been at fault. My PC’s are directly next to each other. A 3-foot cross-over cable is all I use. Yet cannot get 100Mbps. Cable is fine, cards are both intel 10/100. Yet I cannot connect at 100Mbps. Auto-connect works, but only finds 10Mbps. If I force both nics to 100Mbps I get no connection. Ive tried different nic’s and a different x-over cable but get the exact same results. Any help would be appreciated. Here’s a good one. Have CAT5 from the basement switch to the second floor. PC on the second floor receives no packets & limited connectivity indication. Bring my laptop to the second floor and plug in the CAT5 and all is good. Replaced the NIC card on the PC same problem. No receive packets & limited connectivity. Swapped out switch in basement and no difference. Great article. I might suggest some other "wireless/semi-wireless" alternatives that are now available for the home or small office network. 1. Powerline (available from Netgear(My preference) and others) You simply plug in an Homeplug certified ethernet adapter to your electrical socket and connect from there. The network uses the electrical lines in your home to transmit the data. And the latest powerline stuff can do 200MBs =) 2. Wireless 802.11 you can even get "wireless boosters" to extend your range which are a better choice than adding another access point from a security standpoint.Make sure your wireless access point/router you use a password other than the default and you enable an encryption stronger than WEP. However the method the article describes perhaps provides the cheapest solution unless you don’t have access to the tools needed. I concur with Home Depot being the place to get those sorts of things. Mr. Eshelman A couple of things to check: 1)confirm that your pin-out for the RJ-45 connectors are to IEEE spec. check out this link for pin-out details, http://www.lesley.edu/faculty/wbarowy/c7100/rj45pinout.html 2) You may want to use a switch instead of a hub. 3) also, if the above suggestions don’t help, try sheilded cable. That may be able to provide a longer cable run. I have a lot experience with Cat 5 wiring but I’m being stumped now by a problem I can’t solve. Running a Cat 5 cable from hub to basement, about 75 ft. run. Have run it twice, once using cable purchased about 5 years ago, then rerun using Cat 5e cable just purchased from Lowes. Same problem both times, cable won’t connect faster than 10 Mbps. In fact auto-negotiation doesn’t work, I have to force computer NIC to 10 Mbps. So I can’t get any 100 Mbps to work such as an access point that I won’t to put in my basement for my wireless laptop. My Tips Cabling Your Home: Many houses are built using platform construction. If it is a two story house, one of the easiest routes to the attic is beside the plumbing stack. Also there is a cat V cable that is certified for use in a plenum. It is available at Home Depot who also carry most of the other supplies and tools you might need. A useful tool to assist in pulling cable is a fish tape but don’t pull the cable with the fish tape; it twists the cables. Instead use the fish tape to pull a piece of twine and the twine to pull the cable. You can make life easier for yourself if you ever have to pull more cable by pulling a second piece of twine with the cable and leaving it there for next time. Who knows? While I have only 2 computers, at present, I have 3 printers: a high volume b/w laser, a 4in1, and a large format inkjet. A fast ethernet n/w with an 8 port switch make the whole thing managable and collision free. The switch also allowed me to connect my ADSL router to all both computers at once. An 8 port 10/100 switch can be purchased for about $80. In the long run, it is the most economical choice. Great Article. One point missed is that most home networks only have 2 computers, and thus don’t yet need a hub or switch. The patch panel can interconnect them with just a crossover cable.
