Nice rundown of some of the many different hybrid storage systems that support SSD and or HDDs. There is a long list of vendors who provide hybrid SSD and HDD type storage systems, arrays or appliances from Dell to EMC to Fujitsu to HDS and HP to IBM to NetApp to Oracle and Solidfire among many others (lots of startups as well)... For those interested in SSD, either as a target, cache, or in a hybrid storage system mode, here is a link to a two part post on the topic (vendor and technology neutral, sorry, no sales pitches ;). Also in the post are links to other related SSD topics and themes including some of the basics such as what is SSD, what to look for and be aware of. Why SSD based arrays and storage appliances can be a good idea (Part I) http://storageioblog.com/?p=2823 In addition to storage systems, for smaller windows server, desktop and laptop situations there are also hybrid hard disk drives (HHDD) such as the Seagate Momentus XT. Disclosure: I have been using the Momentus XT for almost two years now having both the 500GB and 750GB versions that include SLC nand flash (aka SSD), in fact just ordered another one from Amazon to go into a new laptop arriving soon. You can read more about HHDDs in this ongoing series of posts covering my experiences with them. Review: Spiceworks 4.5http://www.windowsitpro.com/article/review/review-spiceworks-4-5#commentsAnchorWed, 09 Jun 2010 02:34:48 GMT
Current version is 4.7, which, with the use of a script available from the Spiceworks website you can monitor both Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010 servers.
As a Spiceworks User since 4.1, it is a great tool, worthy of a 5 out of 5 once you atart using it on a proper network. I have it running on 2 subnets at the moment, one set as a remote collector to reduce traffic between the subnets.
It may be a little tricky to get set up initially, but then again, so are other network management tools, a lot of which require the installation of agents on the clients. Spiceworks has zero footprint on the clients.
Your login is also used to access the Spiceworks community, a great bunch of people who can help you with a lot of problems. The community has members from all over the world, so you could think of it as a free 24/7 support desk.
In the 4 years that Spiceworks has been in existance, there are now over 1 million members/Users. I am proud to be one of them.]]>

SysCompare Pro 1.2 Reviewhttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/news2/syscompare-pro-1-2-review#commentsAnchorMon, 23 Mar 2009 12:15:20 GMT
Michael, thank you very much for the review. As the CTO for MTM Software, we value your feedback on our products. Since the time you reviewed SysCompare v1.2, we have released a newer version that adds a number of features you mentioned were missing - including the ability to import a list of computers to scan. We are also working on version 1.4 which will include the ability to export all of the differences to Excel/XML as well as selecting large groups of computers from Active Directory. Many of our features are driven by our customers and to date, our customers have been very happy with SysCompare as it was. However, we don’t want the product to ever become stale, so we will continue to add new features and functions that our customers can use. As for your comment about the Excel export using XLS format, we choose to export in this fashion so that customers can either use the file with Microsoft Excel or with any 3rd party XML consumption application they choose. Again, thank you for taking the time to review our product and we look forward to any questions and comments from your readers. You can reach us at sales@mtmsoftware.com.]]>

Split-Brain DNShttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/dns/split-brain-dns#commentsAnchorThu, 25 Sep 2008 15:41:49 GMT
Reader Jeff Krull contacted Michael Dragone with this question about his organization’s split-brain DNS configuration: "Mike - Saw your article in Windows IT Pro. Don’t know if you can answer this one regarding split-brain DNS config. We have a split-brain dns zone, which is the root of our AD forest. Since it’s an ad-integrated zone, when performing an nslookup on the zone for mycompany.com, DNS returns a list of DNS Servers (which are the DCs). That’s just great for AD and associated GPO processing, etc. When a user browses the domain internally using a browser, we can’t resolve the company’s web site (i.e. companyname.com times out) because the DCs don’t run IIS to redirect the query, nor do we want our DCs running IIS. Externally, this is not a problem because the DCs aren’t listed in the external zone. Any ideas on how to resolve this issue whereby internal users don’t have to use www.mycompany.com internally to reach our web site? Thanks, Jeff Check out the "Reader Feedback" sidebar (click the link above the article) for the complete conversation between Jeff and Mike. And if you have feedback about this article, post a comment or email it to Mike Dragone (click his byline). Windows IT Pro authors like hearing from readers--and really do respond!]]>
