To repair the damaged Exchange server database, you can use following methods: - If you have clean and updated backup copy, you should try to restore the database with its. - If the backup copy is not clean or not updated, then you should go for ESEUTIL tool. (as given above) - After performing the exeutil.exe utility, it is suggested to use the ISINTEG tool. It rebuilds the Exchange server information store after the restoration and fixes the errors, it encounters, in the information store. If the backup is not updated or any of the aforementioned methods do not work to repair and restore the desired items, you will need to use a third-party Exchange server repair software such as Stellar Phoenix Exchange recovery tool: http://exchange.stellarservertools.com/edb-repair.php]]>

Get Familiar with Exchange Server's ESEUTILhttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/administration-tools2/get-familiar-with-exchange-server-s-eseutil#commentsAnchorThu, 16 Sep 2010 01:53:19 GMT
Hi Jerry,

Thanks for sharing this article about ESEUTIL utility of exchange server. I am agree with you. ESEUTIL is really very powerful tool to repair edb file. But in some situation like error "Operation terminated with error" , it may fail to repair exchange database file and need a third party tool like Stellar Phoenix Exchange Mailbox Recovery.

This edb repair tool uses advanced scanning algorithm to repair & recover exchange data.

Try demo version to preview your recovered items: http://www.edb-repair.com/

Thanks

Why Windows Administrators Should Care About MPIOhttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/interoperability/why-windows-administrators-should-care-about-mpio#commentsAnchorMon, 16 Jan 2006 17:57:12 GMT
HP, EMC and other SAN vendors create DSM’s to work with MPIO for several reasons: 1) Customers want it. If it’s in Windows Server, customers ask their vendors why they don’t support it, and as a major vendor, it’s rather embarrassing to not support a well-written component like Microsoft MPIO when it’s clearly in the customer’s best interest. 2) It’s more stable. Vendors of SAN’s haven’t historically rock stars when writing their own solutions for MPIO. It’s simply easier to write a DSM which is relatively easy and let Microsoft handle the dirty work - especially for the small/medium business segment which might buy a small SAN but the vendor doesn’t want to have to support them. This way the SMB doesn’t buy the expesive MPIO solution from the vendor, stays with Microsoft’s solution, and that’s one less support headache for the SAN vendor. 3) Everyone else is doing it. If you assume that every other vendor’s going to build a DSM, you have to conclude that the best way to differentiate yourself is to simply build the BEST DSM and provide the most well supported solution possible for Microsoft MPIO. This is precisely the tact that EMC took and consequently, they were the first to support MPIO and Microsoft’s VDS technology.]]>

Exchange Server Disaster Recovery: Going Beyond the Basicshttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/exchange-information-store/exchange-server-disaster-recovery-going-beyond-the-basics#commentsAnchorThu, 17 Nov 2005 13:52:54 GMT
Great article! We are also looking at Microsoft’s Exchange disaster recovery solutions, since 90% of our company’s (Exchange Recovery Clinic) clients have Veritas or Arcserve, there are definite problems with these types of systems. We have found that any program that is even with a snapshot, it is still taking a snapshot of an active and most likely corrupted database! We had a customer last week that had spent 15K on a bare metal program with an Exchange agent that suffered a dirty shutdown. After Microsoft and the vendor spent a week trying to restore the PRIV1 file, they called us. We had to send them back pst files which they x-merged into a clean edb. We have seen this over 9000 times this year alone. We decided about a year ago to find a way to backup mailboxes outside of Exchange Server. We came up with the Exchange Recovery Backup System find out about it at www.erbsystem.com or call Michael Stankard at 727-642-5521.]]>

The ESE Backup Process: An Inside Lookhttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/exchange-server/the-ese-backup-process-an-inside-look#commentsAnchorWed, 27 Jul 2005 12:55:19 GMT
Hello All, I am trying to write an application to backup Exchange server. Below is the function I have written for it. I am using VC++ 6.0 and M.S. Exchange server 2003. My application crashes when I invoke the function HrESEBackupRestoreGetNodes. BOOL BackupExchangeServer(HINSTANCE g_hESEDll) { BACKUP_NODE_TREE *pMNUBackupNodeTree; typedef HRESULT (* HrESEBackupRestoreGetNodes) (IN WCHAR* wszComputerName,OUT BACKUP_NODE_TREE* ppBackupNodeTree); HrESEBackupRestoreGetNodes fnMNUBackupRestoreGetNodes = NULL; fnMNUBackupRestoreGetNodes = (HrESEBackupRestoreGetNodes) GetProcAddress (g_hESEDll,"HrESEBackupRestoreGetNodes"); HRESULT hr; if(fnMNUBackupRestoreGetNodes) //function after this line fails hr = (fnMNUBackupRestoreGetNodes) (NULL, pMNUBackupNodeTree); if(hr == S_OK) return MNU_EXCHANGE_BKP_SUCCESS; else return MNU_EXCHANGE_BKP_FAILURE; } The Lod Library successfully loads the dll "esebcli2.dll". Hence the function hrESEBackupRestoreGetNodes should return success, but it fails. Can anyone please point the mistake in my code or give me sample code for Backup Functions. Choosing Basic vs. Dynamic Disk Storage for Windows Servershttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/file-systems/choosing-basic-vs-dynamic-disk-storage-for-windows-servers#commentsAnchorTue, 05 Apr 2005 16:04:57 GMT
I have been testing the use of hardware snapshot technology (EMC SnapView for CLARiiON in this instance) and have found Windows dynamic disk to be very problematic. The snapshot technology works fine - however, if one intends to import snapshots (or clones) into a secondary host to create test servers or to offload backup processing from a primary host, then lots of luck! The issue seems to be that Windows doesn’t like moving dynamic disks from one server to another - which is what you effectively do when carting snaps or clones to another host. I can get a dynamic disk clone or snap into a secondary host - but it takes at least one, and sometimes multiple reboots of the second host to make this work. Not really practical for a production environment. My testing with basic disk works fine both in creating snaps and in importing them to secondary hosts. Also, for EMC Clariion storage, I can use metaluns at the array side and expand a BASIC disk endlessly and on the fly without host or application disruption to increase capacity using the ’diskpart’ CLI tool from MS.. This works as well with dynamic disk and metaluns. As was stated in the original article - allow the hardware vendor to handle the RAID. If you do this, then what is the point of dynamic disk? ]]>

As of Oct 2004, we’ve reviewed several VSS requesters/providers for Ex2003 on Win2003. NetApp using iSCSI is compelling, and offers copy-on-write snapshots, and multiple ones at that. Veritas Storage Foundation 4.1 offers any attached storage the ability to preform a clone Exchange snapshot via command line. We’re now investigating HP’s NAS 2000 with iSCSI feature pack and Exchange shapshots. Hopefully it will be the best of both previous products.]]>

Storage Admin: "Choosing Basic vs. Dynamic Disk Storage for Windows Servers" (December 2002, http://www.winnetmag.com, InstantDoc ID 27085) has several errors. The correct VERITAS Software product name is VERITAS Volume Manager for Windows, not LDM Pro. VERITAS Volume Manager is available for all the major OSs and is the worldwide market leader in storage virtualization with a 79.9 percent market share, according to Gartner. VERITAS Volume Manager’s software RAID capabilities are a great choice for Windows Server customers and complement hardware RAID for additional availability and performance. The most misleading statements in this article concern the use of dynamic disks with Microsoft Cluster Server (MSCS). Although it is true that the Logical Disk Manager included with the Windows 2000 OS doesn’t support the use of dynamic disks with MSCS, the addition of VERITAS Volume Manager for Windows fully supports the use of dynamic disks with MSCS. The Microsoft article "Dynamic Disk Configuration Unavailable for Server Cluster Disk Resources" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=237853) clearly states that if customers want to use dynamic disks with MSCS, then the VERITAS Volume Manager for Windows add-on adds support for dynamic disks to a MSCS server cluster.

—Michael Jones Senior Product Manager, Windows Foundations and Editions VERITAS Software

Thank you for your feedback about the article. Although I do understand and respect your points, I didn’t intend to provide details about third-party vendor products. The article was a look at the native capabilities of the Windows OS. My statements are accurate for a native Windows scenario.

Do you know if a dynamic disk configuration (instead of basic) with Hardware Raid (PERC Card, NAS PV755N DELL) can be the cause of file system instability and inconsistency? Many files were corrupted, and the chkdsk /f has not been able to recover all the data corrupted. So do you think we should have let basic disk configuration, or may be it’s another reason?]]>

From experience with Win2K... Lost 2 drives in a RAID5 attached to hardware RAID controller. The drive was a dynamic disk. MS PSS had tools to rebuild the corrupted MBR if the drive had been basic, but no go with dynamic. Since you can make a basic disk a dynamic anytime, but once you go dynamic you can’t move back to basic, make sure there is a compelling reason. (And always have a hot spare :-)]]>

Hello, just a small correction to James’s comment. Usage of ESE-API is NOT unique to Antigen’s software. Trend Micro also offers antivirus solutions for both: ESE API and AVAPI. Probably there are also other antivirus vendors supporting Exchange 5.5. ]]>

Windows sans SANshttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/san/windows-sans-sans#commentsAnchorWed, 26 Mar 2003 11:16:05 GMT
For our needs, the real advantage of SAN technology over DAS and NAS is the simultaneous availability of the storage resources to multiple servers. Any workflow that requires multiple servers to process the data in sequence (prepress activities, for example, where the Postscript file written by the application server becomes the input for the raster image processor server whose output becomes the input for the proofer and the plate burner) gains greatly by letting each server in the chain see the input and output files as directly connected to them rather than requiring trips over a LAN with concommitant transitions from stream to block form and back. Offloading all of that activity alone can halve the time requirements of the entire process. The scalability and speed are nice but would not justify adoption by themselves.]]>

It’s a bad idea to categorically recommed against using the OS to handle your fault tolerance. A properly configured duplexed mirrored file system (multiple controllers, cables & disks) eliminates any single point of failure in the disk subsystem, this is a level of redundancy which is unavailable on all but the most expensive hardware RAID solutions. For many, giving up a small portion of performance for a significant amount of fault tolerance is the best choice.]]>

Windows NT does not support dynamic disks. The .NET server does not have multi diskgroup functionality, which they should have put into. I found that Veritas Cluster server supports dynamic disks as well as basic disks. Also their Volume Manager have multi diskgroup functions.]]>

I have one word for Windows users regarding SAN: DataCore.com (I think that is one word). From Snapshot Backups, Disaster Recovery solutions, Business Continuence (with AIM product), and performance even the "storage industry leaders" can’t compete with. Don’t even get me started on the ROI subject. Read the white papers for yourself.]]>

Using a Recovery Server in an Exchange 2000 Environmenthttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/exchange-2000-server/using-a-recovery-server-in-an-exchange-2000-environment#commentsAnchorMon, 11 Nov 2002 09:01:56 GMT
This article makes no sense at all. We have an active directory domain of 1,000 users and each user has a mailbox. If we create a new Forest that we must import all those users to the new forest. Now what happens when 5 new people are hired and 5 people are fired. This happens every week!!! How are you supposed to manage two forests? If the main forest changes, which it does daily... How are you supposed to reflect those changes in the new forest?. The auther NEVER even mentions that you must add all your users to the second forest!!!! This is crazy. I dont think the author even works in IT. This article is pure garbage, why it was poublished I have NO idea!!!!]]>

In Depth: Exchange's ESE Restore Operationhttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/backup-recovery/in-depth-exchange-s-ese-restore-operation#commentsAnchorMon, 30 Sep 2002 14:24:20 GMT
On my home office system (which was connected to a network), I had some personal folders/files I had enabled EFS encryption. This was a Home PC running Windows 2000 Professional (NOT Server). Later, my hard drive crashed (failed drive). My files were recovered from a backup, but I found to my dismay that the files were not accessible to me any longer and I have been unable to recover them. Is there ANYWAY to get access BACK to my personal files??? Any advice on this type of ’disaster’ recovery?]]>

When Companies Merge: A Messaging Solutions Storyhttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/exchange-2000-server/when-companies-merge-a-messaging-solutions-story#commentsAnchorSat, 31 Aug 2002 03:34:20 GMT
Hi I need a favour from you, when companies merge Both the companies are already having Exchange server 5.5 on Win NT4.0 The scenerio is as follows: Two organizations are having two mail servers at the moment, eg, abc.com and xyz.com organizatons respectively. The existing infrastructure is, Win NT/Exchange 5.5 at each location. One office is located in India and the other in U.S, say abc organization is in India and xyz is in U.S. Now they want to implement single mail server with single organization structure at the U.S location and want to maintain one GAL(mail id’s of abc and xyz at xyz.com site) and all the mails should be forwarded here onwards to xyz organization itself and then re-routed to the users of abc. The goal: 1. We have to migrate the mailboxes of abc organization to xyz organization. 2.We have to maintain xyz as the only one organization and maintain one GAL for all the xyz and abc organization. My query’s are: 1.Is it possible to migrate the mail boxes of abc organization to xyz organization and maintain all the mailboxes at the xyz organization itself only, using the same existing Win NT 4.0/Exchange 5.5 ? 2. If query 1, is not possible with existing connectors of Exchange 5.5 to implement migration process, is there any third party software’s which will support the migration of mailboxes from one organization to other? 3. If above two methods r not possible then pls let me know how can we implement by upgrading from win NT to win 2K and exch 5.5 to Exchange 2K server. Pls provide me solutions for my quires of 1, 2 and 3, as well provide me guidelines for upgrading ex change 5.5 to 2000 and how to establish Internet Mail Connector from Exchange 2000 server to Exchage 5.5 Server. ]]>

I am refering to: "Mixed-mode operation prevents you from moving servers between administrative groups (something you can do in Exchange 2000 native mode)" As far as I understand it, this is not possible in NATIVE MODE. Could you let me know whether Microsoft documents this?]]>
