Our small organization is starting on a quest to implement a BI Analysis Services solution. I have been task to setup Analysis Services, create a cube via VS 2008, and then access and manage the data through SQL Server 2008 SSRS.

Since I am new to Analysis Services and creating cubes, what would be the best place to start. I am looking into purchasing BI videos to provide a greater understanding of how to begin to setup the solution on a step-by-step basis.

Could you provide some assistance or direction on how I should start the process of implementing Analysis Services and creating cubes?

Thank you in advance for your assistance and support.

Nice article! One more thing about tableau, if you are using tableau to visualize relational data, it is slow, much slower if your data is large. Tableau works best with multi-dimensional data, when you do that though then you lose one of tableau’s nice features; time intelligence!

Excellent list Derek!

I would just add 1 to your list that is a nice tie-in to the topics that we cover in this SQL Mag BI Blog, Microsoft BI Data Visualizations. Bart Czernicki’s new version of using Silverlight for BI was updated late last year for Silverlight 4: http://www.amazon.com/Silverlight-4-Business-Intelligence-Software/dp/1430230606/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpi_1

@kskistad: it’s hard to see which one is the "Rolex", seing that Plateau Desktop pro goes for USD$ 1800 (according to their site) and PowerPivot is either Free (if you already have Office 2010), or costs a few hundred bucks, considering the cost of Excel or Office 2010 to run the free PowerPivot... As for the server products, there’s no price listed in Plateau’s site, so one can only imagine that it won’t be so cheap... As for Tableau improving in the feature, so will the competition, most likely! :)

Mind that I’m *not* trying to sell PowerPivot! Just pointing out that the "disadvantage" of having to buy Excel/Office 2010 is largely outweighted by Plateau’s huge price... Even the non-pro version still costs USD$ 900, which is more than enough to buy Office 2010, plus, you get ALL that Office has to offer you, not just a BI tool...]]>

Thanks Derek,

So that means Crystal Reports 2008 works with SQL Server 2008?!? How about Windows 2008?
According to SAP’s doc at http://resources.businessobjects.com/support/communitycs/TechnicalPapers/cr_2008_supported_platforms_windows.pdf it is not supported, or not listed as supported.

We have a business user issue where she needs Crystal Reports 2010 for Visual Studio but it’s for Visual Studio, which she doesn’t use. So we’re stuck.

Thanks,

Derek, I agree with you on the powerpivot as a great tool to implement SSBI but how would you rate its association with SharePoint 2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2? Do you think people will buy licenses for SharePoint 2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2 just to use PowerPivot? There is a big difference between "We already have SP2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2 so let’s use PowerPivor for SSBI" and "We need to buy licenses for SQL Server 2008 R2 and SP 2010 so that we can implement SSBI using PowerPivot". ]]>

SQL Azure got 95% of the attention while Windows Azure got only 5%.

In our reality as a ERP software vendor, we are beginning to see more and more movement to the cloud, but there are still plenty of folks who are happy with our on-premise version.]]>

I know you mention at the top of your article that you exclude the price factor, but I think that plays a big part. If my goal was to tell the time, should I buy a jewel-encrusted watch from Rolex for $9,000 or a Timex for $50? They both do a good job at telling the time, but Rolex people would argue it is more precise, better constructed, will last longer, etc. which I would agree. But again, the goal is to tell the time, not have a time piece that can outlast me.

First of all, to use PowerPivot you would have to invest in Office 2010, and for most large companies that is no small undertaking. Also, for server, you would have to invest in SharePoint 2010 which you would purchase for more than PowerPivot, so it’s deployment would likely be company-wide and have many servers involved. Tableau Server on the other hand would be tailored to only those BI users who need it for it’s intended purpose.

And, Tableau will most likely improve it’s product and the differences you mention will not be a factor.]]>

Derek: Your "BI for DBA" posts immediately caught my attention. My startup company makes the product that automates most of the BI development tasks, and saves 50% of the costs and risks associated with BI development with MSAS. Our product line is called RapidOlap (http://www.rapidolap.com). One of the features we advertise is sort of the "BI for DBA" concepts (because our software doesn’t require BI expertise to build robust SQL Server based BI processes). A few days ago we were mentioned in Top 5 Startup Watch list by the Journal of New England Technology (http://rapidolap.com/blog/2009/10/rapidolap-tops-startup-watch-by-masshightech/). I keep following your posts, and I’d be certainly very interested to see some coverage of the tools that do the job faster than traditional sophisticated BI-developers oriented tools, e.g. (http://rapidolap.com/blog/2009/09/bi-under-3-minutes/). Thanks MarcosGalvani I thought quite a bit in writing this post about just saying "this is what BI is" and being rather boring about it. As opposed to that method of description I choose to provide the passionate view of BI. Rapid BI is also an important concept because a lot of great BI projects are out there but prospects are so intimidated by the traditional methods of delivery that they never get off the ground. This is unfortunate because of 2 reasons: 1. The more BI projects that start, the more experts will be produced, thus better satisfying the huge demand. (see Gartner CIO polls) 2. Potential "BI companies" do not become such as thus lose a significant potential advantage. Thanks for the comment! Derek]]>

Hi MarcosGalvani, A common issue I have found for non-BI experts coming to the field of BI is that they traditionally feel as if the technology drives the solution. And while that is a more valid statement (although not completely valid) for other areas of IT, it is the opposite for BI. In the post I will be writing today I will cover the technical side of BI and hope you’ll find it more to your liking. Best Wishes Derek]]>
