Kevin, May I please say AMEN! It may be useful to see those completion messages when you have a manageable number of databases but on systems with numberous db's, that trace flag is invaluable. Three of the servers I manage have 150+ databases each and it is impossible to zero in on a real issue in the error log with thousands (I mean thousands- daily backups plus hourly tran log backups = thousands of entries!) of these benign messages filling up the error log! Thank goodness for the 3226 trace flag! Stefanie Higgins]]>

Kevin, It is annoying, but it can also be helpful. Knowing errors happened close to the backup times might point you in the direction that the backup caused an issue. Michael Dean]]>

Tool Tip - The Awesomeness of RoboCopyhttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/sql-server/tool-tip-the-awesomeness-of-robocopy#commentsAnchorMon, 15 Mar 2010 17:22:58 GMT
Instead of Robocopy, use RoboCopyPlus (www.robocopyplus.com).
It is a wrapper around your instalaltion of Robocopy, that adds email notification depending on the job result (success, warning, error) and optionally attaches logfiles that it can strip down to showing the warnings and errors only.

Becasue it’s only a wrapper, it works with all versions of Robocopy and you can use yoru existing scripts pretty much; just need to add the swicthes that define the email message to be sent out.

We use it for our customers and is hugely enhances the ease of managing som any daily jobs.

Cool little tool :)!]]>

Plagiarismhttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/sql-server/plagiarism#commentsAnchorWed, 06 Jan 2010 04:54:59 GMT
Just to set the record straight. Im not the same kalpesh thaker who committed the original offence :). However i do share the same name...so don’t panic :) I work as a day to day linux sysadmin in southern africa, and discussing tips and issues on public forums and networkds has become somewhat of a day to day enjoyment for me. Plagiarism in my book is definitely a serious offence. Unfortunately, due to way that information has become so publically available nowdays, this kind of thing will happen time and time again. I think setting an example of an offence should be more than enough to discourage people from plagiarising material on public networks. Plagiarism is a form of theft, and legal action should be taken depending on the offence committed. I do think that careful moderation of publications needs to be improved in general, as in most cases, this is a last measure before the publication goes live.]]>

Health Data Rightshttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/sql-server/health-data-rights#commentsAnchorMon, 28 Sep 2009 07:28:47 GMT
Kevin, I agree with most of everything you said - and I’ve been there. Most of the last few decades of my career have been spent in the juncture between MSSQL and health care (see my blog http://www.MSSQL-HealthIT.com). One other nuance in the progress is this: Many hospitals are on a nearly 10 year plan to convert to Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems, which include many modules (Billing, Scheduling, Order Entry, etc.). It’s been my experience that data mining, indeed, BI, only occurs when hospitals are many years down the road with this effort, after huge amounts of info has been collected. They then turn to ETL issues, poor query response, self-serve BI, etc, only at this time - with all the heartache (and hearturn, fellow GERD patient) that incurs. We can assist these leaders by encouraging them to adopt BI systems *at the same time* as the inception of the first EMR modules, rather than as an afterthought. This is particularly pertinent since a system has to be installed to prove "meaningful use" in order to receive the stimulus money for the next few years. Us old SQL dogs have both an opportunity and a duty to encourage such adoption. Regards, Michael Clifford]]>

Plagiarismhttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/sql-server/plagiarism#commentsAnchorWed, 23 Sep 2009 00:21:39 GMT
Hi Kevin, I guess my reply is a bit late comer! :) But anyways... I completely agree with you that Plagiarism is a form of Theft! And hence it must be dealt with just like one! Every professional must take responsibility of what he / she is publishing and claiming as his / her own pieces of work. Now days, with the help of blog sites, forums, it’s very easy for one to violate copyrights and still get away with it. In order to control Plagiarism, the concerned governing bodies of these sites must have some measures to verify the Authenticity of the Author himself/herself and also every article he/she publishes. I feel very bad about that fact that the cases that you have pointed out in this article come from my home country, India. These are some of those incidents which allow people to form opinions about India. However, please let me assure you that these are only very rare cases and there are plenty of Professionals from India still around with their Dignity intact! Hope this makes sense! I agree there needs to be a code of ethics for a Database Administrator. I also think the responsibilities for a Database Administrator need to be more clearly defined. I have worked with databases in some form or antoher for over 12 years and I find that most companies have no idea what a Database Administrators job should be. I have worked at my current position for 8 years and I find that many times ethics and best practices go out the door in exchange for profit and customer satisfaction. I continue to explain the need for data protection and best practices. Sometimes I feel between a rock and a hard place. Hopefully in the future as the need for instant data, reports, and metrics grows corporations will begin to value their DBA’s more and listen to them.]]>

I think that we should strive to find the right solution for the problem in the current environment. I’ve been in environments where the staff was so pedantic about "the process" that they lost the spirit behind the need to support the users, and in environments where there was too much other work to do to spend time doing more than the minimum necessary to get the job done. Neither one was good, but the management and staff seemed to think that it was okay for them at the time.]]>

At the moment there is no incentive or consequences involved for a lot of companies to ensure best practices are enforced or in the training of there staff.]]>

Just a random thought - Any code should include the words "To the best of my ability,...". That leaves it up to me (and my employer, I would hope) to improve my ability, through training, reading, best practices, whatever. If something untoward were to happen with the data I was protecting, I would rather be thought of as slightly unknowledgeable than unethical. Knowledge can be learned; I don’t think "evil" can be fixed.]]>

This is a valid, but difficult question. Being the sole dba and typically working for people that don’t understand the funtion(s) of a dba, I am often directed to make do with little personnel or hardware resources. Security and database maintenance are seen as secondary priorities to providing support for developers and data to customers. The joke here is that I’m risk-adverse, but my thought is that is what I was hired for - to protect the data.]]>

Well, not much to add, I think you covered the basis and most important things. If I have to add something, I would say: Keep an eye out of SQL Server, take some time to see what others are doing in the same field. Could be Oracle, IBM or why not... MySQL. See what they are doing and how, figure out why they should be doing it with SQL, thinking about this in advance could be a good thing when you have to argue about why you are a SQL Server DBA instead of ORACLE or DB2 DBA.]]>

I agree Kevin. I’ve been getting the sense that MS has been trying to turn the DBA role into some form of database-centric application developer. The app-dev’s I work with have loved most of the new features that have been abstracting them from database objects, and the need to know much about database modeling to build a data driven application. I understand that they are concerned about losing developers to competing ORM technologies, but instead of LINQ (TNBT), I wish they would spend time working on things that DBA’s want. Native change/revision control for SQL Server and DB objects would be a good start. RyanB SQL DBA]]>

If the poster is larger than A3, provided it’s pretty, I’ll roll it or fold it and file it somewhere. Years later it could be interesting or funny to look at. So size is the number one decider. Even A3 is a bit big, but if it has a diagram that is a useful overview - e.g. the parts of SQL 2008 or the "BI Burger" - then I might put it on a precious bit of wall-space. If it’s a reference with lots of words then it really has to be something I can hold in my hands. Is that still a "poster"? Whatever, that’s the kind of thing I prefer to get at shows and with magazines.]]>

It’s funny that Johnl123 is so vehement about DailyKos. I suspect it’s because DailyKos is a liberal blog and doesn’t agree with John’s values. So I should immediately point out that these are simply blogs that I, as a person, enjoy reading and has nothing to do with the editorial direction or scope at SQL Server Magazine. I also firmly believe that blogs, in general, are not sources of information rather they are sources of opinion. Therefore, if you don’t like the opinions coming from a blog, then you can certainly ignore it. Otoh, I also read the blogs at the Economist.com on a regular basis, and is a much more conservative news outlet (politically, not socially conservative) than many other such as FoxNews. In my case, I like to see opinions from a wide spectrum of smart people. Consequently, I read what they have to say - every one from G. Gordon Liddy to Arianna Huffington. However, I’ve rarely seen a political blog that generates news - they simply editorialize on news that is reported by other reputable news agencies. But, again, this is just my reading tastes and does not reflect, in any way on SQL Server Magazine’s opinion or editorial direction. -Kev]]>

RAID6 on SQL Server?!?http://www.windowsitpro.com/article/sql-server/raid6-on-sql-server-#commentsAnchorWed, 31 Oct 2007 12:52:11 GMT
Hi Sean, I have done considerable testing of RAID5 compared to RAID1 and RAID10. Since RAID5 is similar to RAID6, you might be interested in the results. On TPC-C tests scaling to 3000 concurrent users, RAID1 was 310% faster and RAID10 was 319%. These are, imo, rather significant performance gains. I have to say that I was expecting in the range of 30-50% better performance. A 3X performance improvement was very surprising to me. This and other findings were documented in an article published by SQL Server Magazine called "Bare Metal Tuning". Sorry, but I don’t have the article ID number handy. Hope this helps, -Kev]]>
