Do you have digital assets stored in either an Legacy Xdrive account or an AOL Xdrive account? Time is running out to get those assets....AOL is shutting down Xdrive on 12JAN2009....Hurry....! Got assets stored in your Xdrive account? I recommend choosing ElephantDrive and to make transferring those digital assets over as easy as possible just click the link http://www.elephantdrive.com/m/ct.aspx?ici=267 ...this is the Xdrive to ElephantDrive migration page. Xdrive and ElephantDrive have worked out a process to help account holders make the transition as easy as possible especially if you don’t have the time to babysit the zipping process, one of mine took over 8 hours. ElephantDrive uses the Open Xdrive API to access your account and perform the zipping process for you. Once your accounts data is zipped up a new ElephantDrive account will be created containing your assets. There are several other online storage competitors out there, some offering Free accounts ranging in many quotas and paid subscriptions that will cover not only individual consumers needs but SMB companies needs and subscriptions that will cover large companies enterprise needs. Here’s one list I recommend checking out; http://tomuse.com/ultimate-review-list-of-best-free-online-storage-and-backup-application-services/ One last item to mention AOL has sent out email notifications; you’ll might need to look in your SPAM box. Murat & anthonycasillas - What happens when you try to resolve internal names through the proxy server? Wouldn’t the proxy solution require listing all your internal servers in the external DNS zone? I have the same setup and honestly don’t think there is a viable solution. Our website is hosted externally so it effectively creates a split-brain DNS. The host handles external DNS and we handle internal DNS in an AD integrated zone. This seems to be one downside to using the same domain name internally and externally. I have set up a CNAME for "www" and that seems to be as good as it can get. The proxy solution does not really work (even with a stub zone) since the DNS lookup is going to hit the internal DNS servers first, realize the domain name should be resolved locally, but be unable to resolve a lookup with no "www". There is no provision in DNS to forward based on the subdomain, only on the second level domain.]]>

I for one would never use the external domain as the root for AD. Rather, I’d create a subdomain ad.mydomain.com for AD. That way I can have my ISP do the external DNS of mydomain.com and my internal domain will be separated from the external zone while maintaining connectivity. If I later added some other subdomain, say corp.mydomain.com, whether it’s AD or not, I could add glue records in the mydomain.com domain for both ad.mydomain.com and corp.mydomain.com to ensure that the domains could cross-resolve names. Using a proxy server isn’t a solution IMHO, more like a workaround, posing a whole other administrative challenge. Proxies should (again, IMHO) be transparent to the client computer as well as the user and administrator, ie traffic inspection and web caching on the default gateway.]]>

The problem can be solved by using a proxy server: 1) Proxy server uses external DNS server, so it resolves the mydomain.com to the actual DNS server, not DCs. 2) The Internet Explorer programs should be configured to use a proxy server, making use of the Group Policies. After that, when the internal clients type mydomain.com in th address bar, proxy server resolves the name, get the actual address and proxies the request to the actual Web server. Mark, thanks for your response! I’m glad to hear that you think the content of SQL Server Magazine is valuable enough that you’d pay even more for it. :-) I don’t know that enough of your fellow DBAs would agree with that (from what I’ve been told by our managers), but I’ll definitely pass along your suggestion for doing a reader survey about sub. price to our circulation team. To give you some perspective on the dilemma that SQL Mag (and just about every other trade magazine--look what’s happened to the size of Computerworld, for instance) faces, paper and mailing costs are skyrocketing-and have been for several years. Adding pages could increase our production and postage costs well beyond an amount that would produce an acceptable profit margin with a 30-40 % ad ratio, as SQL Mag currently has. Like any business, we have to earn enough profit--if for no other reason than to keep publishing the quality material that we do! I appreciate your feedback, and the editorial staff will consider your suggestions for more pages, publishing all the code, and larger font size. Hi Anne, I just read your article and my first reaction is why don’t you raise the subscription price for the magazine ? You currently charging some $40 per year (not to mention discounts, promotions, etc). What for us, highly paid database professionals, 40 dollars is ? For most for us, it is equivalent of about 1/2 hour pay. I think you can easily increase it by 25-50%, and we database community will accept it with understanding. As for me, I would love to see your magazine would have like 64 pages instead of currently 48, with all the code printed in paper edition as well slightly increased font size and perhaps fitting more articles which have been declined just because of printing space concerns, for paying subscription price accordingly. And by keepping a ratio of 30-40% of advertisements you will actually get more revenue from this source as well because you will get some 5 extra pages for this. If you think I am only one like this, you can conduct a survey for this topic, online or in paper edition. I think you will get 99% approval for this. Have a happy New Year. Mark Shvarts]]>

Nice script, Jakesty. The beauty of this solution is that you can extend it in whatever way fits your environment. In my case I didn’t need to capture as much information as you do. If I were to deploy this solution to a larger userbase I would definately track more information such as IP address. One nice benefit that I see with using a straight "pre-formatted" text file rather than one formatted in CSV is that I can e-mail the entire text file to a manager without having to go though and parse it first before sending it off.]]>

I was hoping to get some good info from this article regarding how the script was created. Unfortunately it was much more simple than the one I currently use. I guess it would be a good starting point in tracking the users. The solution I have runs in much the same way but instead copies the file to a hidden network path, and stored in a CSV delimited file. The file contains several fields which would allow me to sort the data if necessary in an Access or Excel program. I too have it running from the GPO in the Default Domain Policy/User configuration/Windows Settings under LOGON/LOGOFF. Here is how my bat file looks. @Echo off Rem Extract only the last IP address from the list FOR /F "TOKENS=2* DELIMS=:" %%A IN (’IPCONFIG /ALL ^| FIND "IP Address"’) DO FOR %%B IN (%%A) DO SET IPADDR=%%B Rem Extract the NETBIOS name FOR /F "TOKENS=2* DELIMS=:" %%A IN (’IPCONFIG /ALL ^| FIND "Host Name"’) DO FOR %%B IN (%%A) DO SET netbiosname=%%B Rem Extract the MAC ADDRESS FOR /F "TOKENS=2* DELIMS=:" %%A IN (’IPCONFIG /ALL ^| FIND "Physical Address"’) DO FOR %%B IN (%%A) DO SET macaddress=%%B echo S,%DATE%,%TIME%,%username%,%netbiosname%,%ipaddr%,%macaddress% >> n:\Logs\PCs\%netbiosname%.txt The last line saves the data to the CSV file. The ’S’ stands for SignOn, use the same bat file in your logoff but replace the ’S’ with an ’O’ or whatever to denote sign-off. With this solution you can look at all of the computers in one directory. I have a scheduled task which runs on the first that creates a directory and moves all of the files there. Something else this solution solves for me is that I have users who roam the network when they login in order to do their job. A simple COPY statement of all the files and dump it to Access, and you know when and where they last logged in for the month, including our TS users. I think you’ll find this to be a better solution and no more difficult to implement and easier to manage given that the data is stored centrally. Jake]]>

HirenC: Thanks for your comments about Exchange & Outlook Pro VIP. We have actually received relatively few complaints from subscribers about the change to an online format (about 1% of subscribers have emailed or written comments opposing the change). Re your concern about advertising on the site: Exchange & Outlook Pro VIP has no ads on its pages. We feel strongly that readers who subscribe to this service should be able to access the content on the site free of ads. You should be able to log on directly to the Exchange & Outlook Pro VIP site (http://www.exchangeprovip.com) without ads. As for your complaint about accessing back issues/articles, I agree that doing so should be easier than it is currently. We are working on creating a searchable archive that will include all previously published articles, grouped by month, from Exchange & Outlook Pro VIP and Exchange & Outlook Administrator. Finally, if you like the convenience of having a print issue, we provide a monthly PDF containing the previous month’s articles, which you can download and print out. The online site also offers additional benefits that we weren’t able to provide with the print newsletter, such as a subscribers forum, a Q&A box, and extra content (news and features) that we can publish in a more timely way than before. I encourage you to give the additional new features a try and let me know what you think of them. --Anne Grubb, editor, Exchange & Outlook Pro VIP agrubb@windowsitpro.com]]>

Obtaining older issues is such a chore, and I just don’t have the time to be browsing through loads of pages. Also when I pay for a service I do NOT expect to always be dealing with adverts just as I log in. Content as ever is good, however I can not see myself maintaining my subscription for much longer, because to get the same content as I did previously I am having to take time out of my allready heavy daily schedule!! You guys at Windows IP Pro. have got to be out of your minds! Going online only was and is a VERY bad move. I have been a subscriber for years and one of th MOST important benefits to me was being able to take a hard copy with me. I would take a copy with me to the Doctor’s, restaurant, shopping with my wife, road trips, vacations. I am also a visual learner, I HAVE to "highlight" and "underline" using five or six different colors. It’s a REAL handicap for me if I can’t do that!! I would have paid more for you newsletter to keep a hard copy. As it is now, if I ever cancel my account with you guys or come into bad financial times and can’t renew, I lose ALL access to EVERYTHING, past and feature! I’ll have NO history to look back at. My hard copy "Back Issues" are some of the MOST important Exchange and Outlook reference material I own! You tell me, why should I keep paying for that? Like dhoefer, ufcitman said above: “For the most part, the content in your publication is available elsewhere (one the web), might be from different authors or in different formats, but it’s fair to say there are no real secrets in the Exchange world. The true benefit for me was having a number of relevant topics packaged together in a form that I could grab at my convenience…” You guys mad a BAD move on this one! Lamar Thomas]]>

I do not agree with the decision to become an online-only publication, especially without asking the customers that actually PAY for your publications. I pay for a printed newsletter I can take with me and read anytime, which has always justified the cost. As an IT professional, I already spend too much time staring at a montior, and I truly appreciated the hard copy format your publication offered. Paying $150 to read a website I’m not going to use is a waste of my money and a scam for those of us that have paid for multiple years in advance. This change has caused me to cancel my subscription with your publication. I urge you to open a dialog with your paying customers in the future.]]>

OMG, nooooooo! You do realize that if you do this and deploy in this manner then you forfeit support from Microsoft: 828287 Unsupported Sysprep scenarios http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;828287 309283 HAL options after Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 Setup http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;309283 “5. Microsoft does not support running a HAL other than the HAL that Windows Setup would typically install on the computer. For example, running a PIC HAL on an APIC computer is not supported. Although this configuration may appear to work, Microsoft does not test this configuration and you may have performance and interrupt issues. Microsoft also does not support swapping out the files that are used by the HAL to manually change HAL types. “ (if support from Microsoft is not a concern, I wish you well if you go through with this.)]]>

I had the same thoughts as Deji after reading the article. If your internal DNS servers were authoritative for the .net domain then they would be able to provide name resolution for that domain no matter what changes your ISP performed. Bruce]]>

Minor Error—Big Headachehttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/dns/minor-error-big-headache#commentsAnchorWed, 15 Feb 2006 22:10:07 GMT
The ISP’s parent company has registered your internal namespace (whatever.net) and created record on THEIR DNS for this namespace. Therefore your users could not log in or surf the web or send emails. Did I read you correctly? If I did, then this makes absolutely no sense! Your internal DNS server is internal. Your clients are using that DNS server for resolution. Your namespace is internal. In this design there is no logical reason why what anyone else in the world does with that namespace should affect your internal operations. I can today decide to use Microsoft.com or windowsitpro.com or some publically-registered namespace for my internal namespace and the only logical consequence would be that I am unable to reach those (AND ONLY THOSE) real domains. You see, my internal DNS server is authoritative for that namespace and it will never go outside and ask my ISP or whoever for records in that namespace. Your ISP registering and publishing records for a namespace should be entirely transparent to your internal DNS server and, as a result, to your internal clients as well. I probably misread what you are trying to communicate here. If so, I apologize. Otherwise, I think you need to redo this interview. As for using .local for your internal namespace and believing that you are now "safe", you are in for a surprise my friend. Although I don’t believe your description of the events and resolutions here, I want to recommend that your "best practice" is to register your namespace. It only costs you about $5 a year. Deji]]>

Minor Error—Big Headachehttp://www.windowsitpro.com/article/dns/minor-error-big-headache#commentsAnchorTue, 07 Feb 2006 02:05:04 GMT
"Now I use .local for all internal DNS settings" - I did this with a new SBS installation...then put a Mac on the network (OS 10.2.8) and could not join it to AD as the Mac uses .local for its own ends and won’t recognise it as a valid network naming scheme. Apparently Apple have produced an answer to this with 10.4...haven’t had a chance to try it yet.]]>
