A. Although Windows XP Professional Edition and XP Home both ship with NTBackup, only XP Pro installs NTBackup by default. You can install NTBackup for XP Home by performing the following steps:

  1. Insert the XP Home CD-ROM.
  2. Navigate to the VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP folder.
  3. Double-click the ntbackup.msi file to install NTBackup.

    I just found a download site http://au.geocities.com/winxpert2001/Backup.zip .
Actually, the HP online chat helper sent me there.

I also have an HP Omnibook with pre-installed Windows XP, and need NTBACKUP for restoring some of the files backuped on my other Windows 2000 machine. I found NTBACKUP.EX_ and two other files (.HLP and .CHM in compressed form) on a Windows XP CD, but not NTBACKUP.MSI and not at the placed described here and elsewhere.

I copies the three *.??_ files to my computer, used EXPAND.EXE (found at C:\\Windows\\System32) to expand them at a DOS prompt. And, I was able to exetute the program without doing any installation.

This is a great site with great people! Thanks!

I own a Toshiba laptop and I am missing the file as well. I borrowed a friend's XP Pro cd and used WinRar to extract the file ntbackup.exe. It works perfectly well. Toshiba sux for not providing a full copy of Windows XP with my laptop.

    Hope that helps!
