Phase 1: Send Phase
In the first phase, once the SMS Scheduler wakes from its polling interval,
SMS checks the SQL database for job requests. If the job's Start After time has
elapsed, SMS will mark the job active and start processing. SMS sends the
package to the sites that contain workstations and servers that have been
targeted for package distribution. In this phase, the SMS Scheduler compresses
the entire package and all subdirectories, and the SMS Sender copies the package
to the child site or sites. At the target sites, the Despooler decompresses the
package into a temporary directory on the Site Server disk drive with the
largest amount of free space. In the SMS Job Details window, the Send Phase,
Send Package to Target Sites option controls this phase.
Phase 2: Distribute Phase
The second phase is the Distribute Phase. In this phase the SMS Despooler
copies the package from the temporary directory on the Site Server to the
Distribute Server or servers SMS_PKGx share. SMS reports the package location
back to the parent site and stores the information to enable a subsequent Remove
Package job to delete the package on all distribution servers. The Site Server
can also be a Distribute Server, but the operation is the same.
Phase 3: Run Phase
The third phase is the Run Phase. In this phase, the SMS Despooler creates
Package Command Manager (PCM) definition files in the site.srv\mancfg.
box\pcmdom.box\domain_name.000 directories on the site server. SMS creates one
PCM file for each target workstation and uses the SMS ID of the target
workstation to name it. SMS copies these PCM files to the site.srv\pcins.box
directories on all SMS Logon Servers within the SMS site. When a user logs on or
when the PCM's polling interval expires, the PCM checks the logon.srv\pcins.box
directories of the logon server it is using and displays the job in the client
window if the Offer After time has expired.
