Work with network files even when you're not connected
In "Offline Files" (December 1999), I discussed Windows 2000's (Win2K's) offline files, which is a network caching feature. This month, I explain this feature in more detail.

The premise behind offline files is that computers can access their local hard disks more quickly than they can access files on a network server. Offline files creates a hidden folder named \winnt\csc on the system drive and keeps copies ...

Used Andreas Wennborg solution (above) on XP, but for me leaving the box for extensions blank didn't make it sync .dbf files, but when I entered a fictitious filetype, eg *.xyz it would then sync .dbf files ok.

I have a question. I notice that when I synchronize, all of the files are taken out of their prospective folders and displayed as just files. How do I syncronize and keep my existing folder structure with each file in its original folder?

I have group policies configured to sychronize offline files, but would like to schedule sychronization to minimize some of the network "hit" at 8:00 and 5:00. I find no information indicating that this is configurable via a GP. Has anyone had experience doing this? Thanks.

Our laptop users have a J: drive on a win2003 server with My documents redirected to point to the J: and the whole of J: being made avaiable offline.
Sometimes when the laptops are away from the network My Docs reverts back to the original path and any attempt to access the J: drive give \\\\server\\path is not available. (like the previous posting)
Anyone have any ideas?

Anyone having a problem when they set up the "My Do***ents" folder for offline use, then just on a whim, it defaults back to the old path and offline files aren't there anymore?

i cannot find this article :

You say when a document is
in the cache and it has not changed on the server, the document is opened locally. Have you checked if this really works this way? According to MS KB article: Q231466, the document is opened from the server anyway, unless you are working in offline mode (which you can't really force except by unplugging the network connection).

How can I enforce the files not cached to all members of my SBS 2003 domain?

Excellent article! I'm running Win 2k SP4. I was not aware that my system was set to make a 120GB NAS filled with GIS data available offline. Of course, over time, Syncronize was filling my hard drive, and I was getting out of disk space errors. I'm the only user on this workstation, and have no idea how Syncronize was enabled.

Can a user delete the cached files manualy without causing problems?

What happens if the server that you are storing the documents on, changes names? Is there a way to easily point the offline files to the new server name?
