Yes I have backed up the system state and then burned it to CD later. I was able to blow away the system and then do a clean install and then restore the system state successfully for windows xp.

Interesting. I've got a question: I came into work today and got a call about a user not being able to print. The end user's network attached printers had a status of 'unable to connect'. I checked the print server and all printers had disappeared. I rebooted the print server and magically the printers reappeared. Had the printers been gone for real, could I have made a full recovery by restoring an older copy of the system state? Would it be worth while?

What happens when you cannot get into windows to restore the system state. Is there an alternative way to restore the OS without having to reinstall to another directory?
