Win2K SP2 News
As several readers have pointed out, my description of the Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2) download in last week's column was inaccurate. I mistakenly reported that the w2ksp2.exe download file works only when you install a new Win2K system. After further examination, I discovered that the download supports three types of upgrades: a traditional upgrade from an earlier version of Win2K, a slipstream Win2K SP2 installation on a new system, and a combination installation that builds an image containing Win2K SP2 and combined hotfixes and custom drivers specific to your hardware configuration.

Installed W2KSP2 and it caused a BSOD 0x7b, scrubbed HDD and clean built W2K Pro and applied patch, it BSOD 0x7b again, tried this twice and same result. any ideas. No extra drivers and running in std vga mode using W2K drivers.

Windows 2000 service pack 2 did a lot for gaming speed and compatibility.
Even the serverside of online gaming(UT, Q3, Half Life, ...) runs much smoother since the SP2 update.
Also for D3D and OpenGL graphical games/aplications it does a lot.

After installing SPK2 on WIN2K server NT4 server w/SPK6 not able to logon to domain access is denied. Win98 clients are fine.

I installed SP2 on my Toshiba 8100 laptop last week and initially had no issues. Subsequently, I have had one unexplained BSOD which has no recurred. However, much more seriously, SP2 breaks the Rational ClearCase 4.1 client. I am able to check out but not check in. Rational knows of this apparently but no fix available from either vendor.

If anyone knows of a workaround, I would be happy to know. I will otherwise have to uninstall SP2 (after backup of my drive). BTW - Any known issues with the uninstall???

Cheers!

I'm having a problem installing sp2. When the installation is complete, the system hangs on "applying computer settings". I can't get into win using safe mode. The only thing that works is safe mode with command prompt. I installed sp2 on roughly 10 workstations so far without a problem (one of these workstations is identical to mine). Any ideas? Does anybody know exactly what's loading during the "applying computer settings" part of the boot up.

After loading SP2 my Win2k Adv. Srvr. Athlon 900 test box, it fails to awaken from what appears to be hibernation or sleep mode. Checking Power Management, it shouldn't even be going into hibernation. Checking Display properties, there is no screensaver selected. I'm thankful I do have a test platform

I installed sp2 on exchange 2000 clusterservers in a testnetwork. No problems. I installed it on a DC and now Terminal service stops "unexpactedly".
For info slipstreaming SP2 see http://www.bink.nu/bootcd

I have installed 2000 sp2 and late also installed the 6.0 explorer...I still have both in my add/remove programs. SP1 does not appear in the add/remove programs.
Here is another inconsistancy even with the bugs.

After installing SP2 on my W2K workstations in an NT 4.0 domain, the w32time service on the workstations reports that "the NTP server didn't respond." This problem only exists with the SP2 workstations. Anyone have a similar problem or a solution?

Logitech has confirmed an incompatibility with their iFeel mouse drivers and Win2K SP2. I installed SP2 on my Dell 420 and upon rebooting got a BSOD. Booting in safe mode resulted in a BSOD. The only way to get my computer running was to reinstall Win2K. At that point, I immediately loaded the iFeel mouse drivers and experienced a BSOD. Supposedly Logitech is working with Microsoft engineers to solve the problem.
