Microsoft this week announced that over one million Xbox 360 owners have downloaded and activated the Netflix application for Xbox Live since the service launched in November. In that time, these users have watched over 1.5 billion minutes of movies and TV shows. More impressive, perhaps: Over one in ten Netflix subscribers are now accessing Netflix content online via the Xbox 360.

"Adding Netflix to our ever-growing library of 30,000 movies and TV shows makes Xbox 360 the best value in home entertainment," said Microsoft corporate John Schappert. "Netflix is a great win for Xbox living rooms nationwide. These families are getting more entertainment from Xbox 360 than from any other device connected to their TVs."

Netflix is rapidly expanding the number of ways in which its subscribers can access content from its Watch Instantly Internet streaming service. The company offers the service via an inexpensive Roku set-top box and has deals with various TV makers in the works as well. But the Xbox 360 usage is interesting because Xbox 360 users must pay for Microsoft's Xbox Live Gold service (at a cost of $50 a year) as well as subscribe to Netflix (at a cost of at least $15 a month). The other Netflix-compatible devices do not come with additional fees.

Netflix is also expanding the capabilities of its service as well. This past month, they began offering some content in HD.

Personally I prefer to use my media center PC for my Netflix viewing. I offer a word or caution for those who own Xbox 360 units and think it would be really cool to stream all of your Netflix movies. Netflix offers very few first rate movies for streaming. After using it on and off for about a year the selection hasn’t gotten any better. In addition, the selection changes at random intervals. I have a 2 year old who loves watching the Wiggles. One day we have lots of shows, including the Wiggles, for the 0 to 2 year old audience and the next day were presented with 10 shows in total all with 2 or 3 star viewer ratings. My wife and I have literally spent a half hour or more on a Saturday evening attempting to find a decent move to stream. Starz entertainment is the only thing on Netflix which offers reasonably recent productions. If you already get Starz in your television package then you are already getting the best that Netflix streaming has to offer. In short the selection for streaming is just poor and not improving. Save your $50 if don’t already subscribe to Xbox live and just keep renting your Netflix movies on disk for now or stream to a PC for free.

You're incorrect about the cost of Netflix. I have an Unlimited subscription with 1 DVD out at a time for the cost of $8.99 (plus tax = $9.53) a month...

I would say that if you are buying an XBOX 360 JUST to perform Netflix streaming, then you would be better suited to use the Roku or another alternate device. The $50/year Xbox Live Gold would provide other substantial added-value to XBOX 360 owners for multiplayer gaming.

That said, I bought an XBOX 360 with Netflix streaming in mind, as well as Media Center Extender streaming, in addition to gaming. I've not been disappointed with Netflix or gaming, but the MCE was a joke. No XVID streaming?? Come on. I've since switched MCE to Tversity, and I highly recommend it.

The only shortcoming of Netflix streaming is that you can't add items to your Instant queue from the XBOX. You have to use a broswer on your PC.
