In "Just Say No to Notepad," September 2004, InstantDoc ID 43573, I reviewed four popular editors that administrators use to develop scripts for Windows. Soon after, many readers wrote to ask why I hadn't included their favorite scripting editor. So, in this month's Top 10, I point you to the 10 best scripting editors for Windows. This compilation includes not just my favorites, but also the editors most popular with readers.

Don't forget about notepad2 (http://www.flos-freeware.ch/notepad2.html) and, of course, gvim and emacs.

I purchased the TextPad editor about a year ago and although I am quite happy with the quality and features of the tool I have to note that vendor seems to have dropped support for this software. The last maintenance release was in June 2004. According to the some of the posts in the TextPad forum at http://www.textpad.info/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6574
there hasn't been any new features added in several years. I will be sure to check the release history of future purchases to avoid "deadware".
