Even though you can upgrade SQL Server Desktop Engine (Windows) to SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition, or to SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition, the following upgrade scenarios are NOT supported:

  • Upgrading to SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition, SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition, or SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Evaluation Edition.
  • Upgrading to SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (also known as MSDE 2000).
  • Upgrading to SQL Server Desktop Engine (Windows).
  • Upgrading from any third-party data engines to SQL Server Desktop Engine (Windows).

NOTE: If you attempt to perform an unsupported upgrade, the upgrade may fail, and the instance of SQL Server Desktop Engine (Windows) may stop working.
