JSI Tip 2264. You get a Windows 2000 error when you try to Eject, Format, or Label removeable media?

When you eject, you receive:

An error was encountered trying to unmount Removable Disk <Drive:>.

Check to make sure there are no open files or windows from that volume.

When you try to format or label the media:

You do not have sufficient rights to perform this operation.

By default, local Administrator rights are required to perform these tasks.

You can change the local system policy and/or domain policy to allow other users to have the right to manage removeable media. To grant the right locally, Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Local Security Policy / Local Policies / Security Options. If you can't find it:

1. Start / Run / MMC.EXE OK.

2. Console / Add/Remove Snap-in.

3. Add / Group Policy / Add / Local Computer / Finish / Close / OK.

4. Local Computer Policy / Computer Configuration / Windows Settings / Security Settings / Local Policies / Security Options.

Right-click Allowed to eject removable......... and press Security. Select:

             Administrators - Only administrators can eject removable media.

             Administrators and Power Users - Administrators and Power users can eject removable media.

             Administrators and Interactive Users - Administrators and Interactive (Standard users) can eject removable media.

secedit /refreshpolicy machine_policy /enforce

NOTE: Even though the policy lists ejecting NTFS, it actually applies to all the subject actions, on NTFS and FAT removeable media.
