Windows Server 2008 RC1
Pros: Rock-solid server upgrade, even in prerelease form
Cons: None
Rating: 5 out of 5
Recommendations: In steady development for an astonishing three and a half years, Windows Server 2008 is, perhaps, the most stable Windows Server release. All major changes such as Hyper-V, Server Core, and Microsoft Internet Information Server 7.0 shipped in previous builds, but RC1 does provide a feature-complete look at the next Server version.

Office Live Workspace Beta
Pros: A true “software plus services” offering; nice Microsoft Office integration; supports Office 2007/2003/XP
Cons: Performance isn’t great; no options for more storage
Rating: 4 out of 5
Recommendations: Microsoft Office Live Workspace is the first good example of the company’s answer to Google’s Web services. Essentially 500 MB of online storage service with Office integration and sharing and collaboration functionality, Office Live Workspace is an excellent alternative to Google Docs, combining the best of Office with the anywhere/anytime access of the Web. I’d like to see more storage options, but its synchronization capabilities with Office are impressive, and it should interest virtually any Office user.
