Each year, the Computer Security Institute (CSI) polls corporate America about the frequency and nature of computer crime. This year, 74 percent of respondents detected security breaches, and a whopping 71 percent reported unauthorized access by internal users. The reported network abuse included theft of proprietary information, financial fraud, data or network sabotage, introduction of computer viruses, and abuse of Internet privileges. Collectively, the respondents claimed losses of $68 million because of information theft and $56 million because of financial fraud; total losses from all computer-related crime topped $265 million. If you think that network security should concentrate primarily on securing your Internet connection, these statistics might be a jarring wake-up call.
