Offline Folders
An age-old challenge when supporting mobile users is deciding where to locate the important data that your users need to perform their jobs. Users generally prefer that you locate the data on their laptop hard disk so that they can have quick and easy access to it. However, they might rethink their choice if something goes wrong and they lose their files. And, if users learn that you don’t have their data backed up, or that the backup you have is out of date, they won't be happy. One solution is to use Offline Folders, a Windows 2000 feature that's especially beneficial for mobile users and the administrators who support them.

I had an insident with Offline folders, basically some PCs syncronized with a network share and the files were removed from the server, now I need to recover those files from the CSC folder contents, but haven't found a way on how to do this.

That might help you, but I think you need to "reinitialize" it.

How can you move a folder to a different server and still have the user be able to sync to it without reintializing the Cache and then setting up offline to the new location? I just want to move the folder and have syncronization manager pick up the new location and just work. ANYONE PLEASE

I'm using some software called deep freeze which deletes any changes made to a PC on rebbot except a thawed partition. Is it possable to move cached files globally to a seperate partion?

The Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit and the Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Resource Kit both contain a utility called Cache Mover (cachemov.exe), with which you can relocate the Offline Files cache. As you point out, the cache folder resides by default in the \\%systemroot%\\csc folder (e.g., C:\\winnt\\csc—csc stands for client-side cache). Using Cache Mover, you can easily relocate this folder to any local hard disk volume.

I have the director of our company setup on offline files for his document folders. We recently moved his files to a new server. I have setup the files to sync to the new server but I can not get delete the old server and the files will not sync to the new server. It said that it is not responding.

Is there any way of seeing the csc file or its contents. I have looked for it, but can not find it. Also, we are having a major problem where after a user has sync'd with the network, they can go home, log on and my documents is empty. any help would be greatly welcomed.

There's a policy
Computer Configuration\\Administrative Templates\\Network\\Offline Files\\Files not cached
Diabling it allows you to cache everything.
If multiple people access these files, nothing in Offline Files will merge the changes. So use it carefully.

We have multiple users (100+) using the offline sync for files on a share drive. We are migrating the share drive server to a new DNS name. For example the old server being 123ABC and we are renaming it to a new name of 456CMD using the same IP. We have run into issues with past conversions where users cannot resync when the come back in after the server name change. Can SOMEONE please point me in the direction of a fix to make a smooth transition in server migration.
Thnks in advance : Mike
