Q: I removed the TCP/IP keys and attempted to reinstall TCP/IP. In doing so, I received the message, "The Registry Subkey Already Exists." How do I fix this problem?

Ensure that you properly removed all the components of a given TCP/IP service. Then, using the Registry editor very carefully (see screen A), make certain the following Registry subkeys are removed.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\NetBT

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Tcpip

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\TcpipCU

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CCS\Services\DHCP

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CCS\Services\Lmhosts

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CCS\Services\
'NetDriver'\Parameters\Tcpip

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CCS\Services\NetBT

SNMP Service:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\RFC1156Agent

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\SNMP

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CCS\Services\SNMP

TCP\IP Network Printing Support:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\LPDSVC

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\TcpPrint

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CCS\Services\LPDSVC

FTP Server Service:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\FTPSVC

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CCS\Services\FTPSVC

Simple TCP\IP Services:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\SimpTcp

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CCS\Services\SimpTcp

DHCP Server Service:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DhcpMibAgent

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DhcpServer

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CCS\Services\DhcpServer

WINS Server Service:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Wins

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WinsMibAgent

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CCS\Services\Wins

    Try looking towards this:
    http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/support/faqs/Errorfaq.asp

At the bottom, you'll find this:
When I attempt to reinstall TCP/IP or add the TCP/IP service, I receive the error message 'The registry subkey already exists or Unable to remove name space provider.' How do I resolve this?

Works for me. I suggest you go clear out everything in the Network control panel first.

    Hope this helps...

I have tried this four times and rebooted after each change to the registry. I then go back to Network configuration to add TCP/IP as a protocol and it still keeps coming back with "Registry Service subkey already exists".

This advice has been of no use to me whatsoever.
