Thank You for the research you have done on the ATA interface. I am learning as much as I can so I can 'fix' my current setup, your article (although 1 year old) has helped me.

How can you distinguish between a 40 pin/40 conductor cable and a 40 pin/80 conductor cable? My machine supports UDMA/100 and came with 2 IDE cables, but a SCSI disk. I'd like to add an ATA disk for cost reasons, but don't know if I need to purchase a cable as well to get the performance.

The reference links in the article contradicts the statements in the article. According to Seagate, mixing ATA 33 with an ATA66 or 100 drive DOES NOT heed performance. You just have to download the utility to set the speed on the faster drive. Intel & Via chipsets have their own separate utilities. I don't really know if the performance is gained, but that is what they are stating. Also ATA 33 does not require an 80 pin cable. Not trying to be particular just noticed the different statements.
