Microsoft announced on Wednesday that it has now sold over 150 million Windows 7 licenses since the product first launched in October 2009. Once again, the company reiterated that this makes Windows 7 the fastest-selling operating system in history, with customers snatching up 7 copies of Windows 7 every second.

"We are excited to announce that Windows 7 has sold 150 million licenses to-date," a posting to the Windows corporate blog reads. "Approximately 75 percent of enterprises are looking at Windows 7 for their organization, and of course people continue to be excited about the features and benefits of Windows 7, and the PCs that our partners are delivering for Windows 7."

Microsoft had previously announced that it had sold 90 million copies of Windows 7 in March, and then updated that figure to 100 million on April 23, exactly two months ago. The company is now selling over 25 million copies of Windows 7 every month. If this trend continues, Microsoft will sell at least 300 million Windows 7 licenses by the end of calendar year 2010. Not bad for the "post-PC" era we're supposedly experiencing right now.

Also on Wednesday, Microsoft announced a third Platform Preview release of its upcoming Internet Explorer 9 browser. And on Thursday, the software giant will make available a public beta version of its next Windows Live Essentials suite, which provides greatly enhanced versions of key Windows 7 (and Vista) applications like Windows Live Mail, Windows Live Movie Maker, Windows Live Messenger, and more. The real reason Paul is not buying an iPhone is because he is holding out for a free skateboard or concert tickets when he buys a Win 7 phone.

"Which drew the bigger crowd in San Diego? Microsoft Store opening or Apple iPhone 4 launch?" http://tinyurl.com/23vekkz

"Free defined the Microsoft Store opening. Free T-Shirts. Free skateboards. Free concert. Free celebrity meetups. Free money...
By comparison, Apple Store drew a very different kind of crowd: People anxious to give up money. They were desperate to hand Apple $200-$300 (before tax) to get an iPhone 4. One group (MS) got paid in freebees for showing up. The other group lined up -- with the promise of hours waiting -- for the privilege of giving up money...Michael Gartenberg rightly asked: 'Which is the better business model?'"

Most of the people who buy Windows do so unwittingly. It is the OS that comes with the Dell, Acer, Toshiba, Lenovo, or Sony computer that they purchased. It's not as if they really had a choice in the matter. People don't choose Windows, PC manufacturers choose Windows because its cheap and it's the only quality thing they can get their hands on.

Once you decide that the Macintosh is not the computer for you (there are many valid reasons) you get the default Windows OS. These numbers are less a reflection on how great Microsoft is, but how pathetic most PC manufactures are. They offer very little to differentiate themselves.

how many copies of chrome OS sold? oh wait it is FREE and even then nobody cares. MS is so dead.

the mac on the other hand still has a future until all those graphic designers who belive macs are good for graphics retire. most are in their late 50's so after that steve can put the apple mac os to pasture and become the phone company apple should be by buying tmobile or sprint.

    subzerohitman721,

I have no issues with the fact that Microsoft has sold 150M copies. Great for them. I recommend that people who prefer Windows to a Mac upgrade to Win 7 or get it on a new machine. In fact I don't ever recall bashing Microsoft for Windows 7. Its a good OS.

My point is all about Paul's analysis. He is not being consistent with the way he goes about reporting and commenting on this stuff. Yesterday Paul wrote about the ipad and their 3M sales figure and spent a great deal of time about the dates and how to count the sales. Yet he does not follow the same method when it comes to Windows 7.

It does not matter who sold what or how many. But it does matter when you intentionally spin the figures one way and then another.

That is not good journalism and he should be called out on it.

    1,

Aren't you just as biased. An anti-Thurrott bias? How does that make you look credible. If you don't like his journalism, just ignore it and move on. Seriously, it just seems like you've got a personal ax to grind.

    My take:

How many times has OS-X sold 150 million copies? None. Even if you add up each version, Microsoft still sells more copies of Windows than Apple does. The fanboys just need to get over it. Honestly, if Apple is your thing, WHO CARES WHAT WINDOWS SELLS. Your Apple for life, be proud of that. Besides, both OSes are at parity. It really doesn't matter.

I just think the fanboys can't stand it that Microsoft won the desktop war and Apple didn't even come in second. Pirated copies of Windows came in second. Do they not have any kind of life that they have to be ranting and raving on a Windows site? That's like an Al Qaeda evangelist at the Vatican preaching the values of Jihad.

Besides Apple has it's successes. They've sold a bazillion iPhone's and iPod's. Can you guys be happy with that? Even I have an iPod Touch right along side my Android device.

It's just getting old seeing these anti-Thurrott haters and anti-Windows guys. Grow up, get a life, get laid, or get lost.

If not, get your own blog.

I'm going to sleep. Congrats Microsoft. Keep doing whatever it is you guys do. Peace.
